Thrift store prowling is 50% need, 50% luck and 50% inspiration.

Say I decide I need a watertight box that is at least 10"x 12" x 16", I head to the thrift store to see if I can find something that is or can be modified to fit my needs.
NEED 50%

While I am there, I find a cable for $2 that I can use in my home theater project.
Luck 50%

On a rack near the  odds and ends shelf I find an old railroad lantern for $8 that I realize I can convert into a porch light for my front door.
INSPIRATION 50%

And there you have it, the secret to thrift store prowling.

If you're thinking that adds up to 150%, well no, it doesn't, because I never did find that damned box I needed.

When you are ready, the junk in the thrift stores will speak to you, and its fitness for some particular project or purpose will be apparent.

My advice is to read more of  Instructables, as this will help prepare you mentally, to see some of the possibilities lurking in ordinary human artifacts, and to hear the subtle voices of thrift store junk speaking.

I agree 150% with burf and with raving. A lot of good thrift store/curb pick reuses come from thinking outside the box, a wrought iron and plastic spanishesque hanging lamp can be flipped upside down and become a really cool hanging planter, that dog kennel your neighbor placed at the curb would make a great frame for a vine covered arbor, the HUGE ball shaped sand filter from the public pool makes a great compost bin that rolls easily and spray painted orange becomes the great pumpkin for halloween, that plastic .10cent dragon when painted chrome becomes a unique hood ornament... just think OUTSIDE the box

The charging station instructable I did started out as a silverware box from the thrift store.

Everything from a thrift store can be used in a project of some kind. This is like asking "what are the uses of matter"? If you can be slightly more specifc, perhaps we can, too.
