Because the old search was written by the I'ble staff themselves, it is not perfect.  There are a lot of things it misses, and it doesn't deal with misspellings or partial words or things like that.

To try to make the search results more complete, I'bles is paying to use Google's software in house.  That's what the "Custom Search" means -- it's Google's technology, but it is only searching the I'bles site.

This means that the search results are more complete, but the presentation is pretty poor.  They're stuck with the way Google wants to sort things, and you can't filter (e.g., only I'bles, or only Questons) the same way you could before.

As Caarntedd noted, the Graphical Search link takes you to the old-style search, and you can continue to use it if you want.

Ah, but just because Google wrote custom search doesn't make Search perfect either.

Not perfect, but measurably better.  It's pretty simple (on the server side) to do searches in both with the same keywords and compare results.  Staff found quantitatively what several of us had observed -- the I'bles original search missed things that it should have found.

It desparately needs better filters though, like you said.

What it really needs is a minimal HTML Forms interface to use a human-understandable pull-down menu to set the filters.  I think you can do some filtering with either keywords or Google codes (e.g., Questons are url:answers; Instructables are url:id; Forum Topics are url:community), but users shouldn't have to know those intricate details.

Next to the search button you should see the words " Graphical Search". After you enter the subject in the Google search box, click Search and when the results come up, click on Graphical Search.
