when I try to connect my desktop to the internet it says «acquiring network address» and doesn't connect to the internet Answered

Even if I leave it a full night turned on it doesn't connect to the internet. It has benn in use for about 8 years, 6 of them not connected to the internet. When I first plugged it intothe internet it downloaded and installed lots of updates and about a month later (still updating) it started to not connect to the internet, saying «acquiring network address» and even after leaving it turned on for an whole afternoon and night, the message has not changed.I use windows XP x32.  What should I do?

Have you tried restarting the computer and the modem?  To restart the modem, unplug the power from it for 2minutes, then plug it back in.

Check if you have a static IP address set for some reason.  Go to start--control panel--network connections--right click on the active connection--click on properties.  This should bring up a dialog box.  Double click on TCPIP v4.  If there are address numbers in there, make a note of them in case your modem does not assign addresses through DHCP.  Make sure both radio buttons to 'obtain an address automatically'.

Contact you IP regarding problems your experiencing, I will bet that portions of the updates being sent to your modem are not firmware compatible . After 8 years go figure
