why do most AVI files not play in the newer windows media player? Answered

Nix windows media player - its garbage :P Grab 'media player classic' or 'vlc media player' - both can play almost any video file with no additional codecs necessary.

Like frollard said, get vlc. You'll probably have a much better experience out of that one.

I think like aiden120000 says, the new player doesn't have a codec installed that the old one did. It usually tries to download one, but try what aidensuggests.
