the 'no' symbol means its 'thinking' - doing anything communication wise between the computer and ipod means it doesnt want to be disconnected.

Is i-tunes installed and running?  If not; dont use itunes on a windows machine.

newer versions of itunes stopped working with older (I think older than 3rd gen) ipods...
use http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/07/08/10-alternatives-to-itunes-for-managing-your-ipod/#floola
I recommend floola.  www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/  its free, and supports most all ipods.

Your problem is itunes. I had this problem and i just simply dumped itunes.

just change your software. then your good to go.

Get something other than an iPod. The Creative Zen series is fantastic and much more affordable, and the software it comes with is better by leaps and bounds than iTunes.
