I’m 12, my mom gave me a iPod when I was 11 all my friends have a phone I get so made fun of! To top it off I have time and social media restrictions and I hate it.

I'm 11 yrs old, and I'm about the only kid in the 6th grade without a phone. I also have 3 younger brothers, and they all got phones when they were 6! 💔😭It's not fair! Does anyone know why my mom would do that?

It really depends because your parents want you to be safe online so they might not want to give you an expensive device called a "smartphone". They may give you a flip phone or cell phone instead for your safety like a Nokia 3310 or Nokia brick. Ask your parents about it and make an agreement on whether you deserve a smartphone or not.

Ok so I’m 13 about to be 14 and I don’t have a phone. All my friends have like an 11 and I have nothing but an iPad. Every time I go off somewhere for a basketball game, I have to use my coach’s phone which is SUPER embarrassing so I can tell my mom when we get back. It’s not ok

The better question would be why do you need one?

If you need it to keep in touch with friends. That may not be good enough. Keep in mind your parents grew up in a time when only rich people had cell phones and they where the size of bricks. A time when everyone had land lines and kids where lucky if they had there own phone number much less a phone in there room.
You don't need a phone to communicate. I know my kids won't get a phone till they are about 13 or older. Even then it will be one that:
  • has no texting,
  • can receive calls
  • can only call out to parent's cell, home or 911
  • will have GPS tracking so i know where they are
Only after they have demonstrated they can keep track of the phone and not loose or damage it and they reach driving age will consideration be given to upgrade them to a basic flip phone without texting. But they have to earn that right. When they get a job and start making there own money then they can get whatever phone and plan they want.

*I'm Late but eh whatever*
Something about the "keep in touch with friends" part. Those were different times. Much different from the world today. Phones have improved and have evolved and saying parents grew up in a time where only rich people had phones, well... you can't compare it with today. Especially since the people living in different times will inevitably, be living differently. People can't help with adapting with the technology or life that's being provided today.
Also saying that only rich people get phones, what do you define as rich? Rich as in living in a big mansion? Rich as in being able to eat out on fancy dinners? Rich as in getting a brick phone? Another thing would be some people were well off at the time of Brick Phones but they didn't.
^people who say these are close-minded people^
But yes I agree about getting a phone when they have their own money.

I am 13 turning 14 this year, and my mum says I’m not allowed to have a phone until I’m 21. I know right?! I go out with my friends a lot on the weekends and my mum (she has her own iPhone) gives me a Nokia phone where you have to go 777 999 222 to type a letter or she says to use my friend’s phone. We usually go to trips to the city and we all go our own ways at my own risk - I choose to stay in the car but even that’s scary!! Do you think I’m the right age to get a phone?

They probably want to give you a Nokia phone for your safety and not an expensive device called a smartphone. They gave you a Nokia so you can only call and text but not a smartphone for you tube, social media etc. If they gave you a smartphone you would get crazy and ask for a new one which would really annoy them. Good luck for getting your phone JessC56.

That sounds rough. I am 11 years old and have no phone. My parents were getting new phones a few days ago and I was super excited bc I thought maybe they would give me one of their old phones. I was right, kind of. They gave me my moms old phone but said I can only use it for emergencies and when I’m at a sleepover or at dance. I was kind of ok with that. Then later I asked if I had a phone number and they kind of blew up and changed their minds they said the phone was “the family’s”. Nobody and I mean nobody wants a family phone am I right? These people......

I'm about 15y old and my parents won't allow me to have a cell phone, where my mom suggested to give my younger brother which is in 7th grade a phone.
my dad says I will take it in university but I can't wait.
if my dad gave my brother a phone I would just run to my room and cry for real like this is unfair if he is a boy or a girl you can't give him and not give me,💔

I'm 11 years old. I am in seventh grade in Algebra 1 and English 1 class at my school in a program called Honors Academy (yes, I skipped a grade). I have only asked my parents once or twice for a cell phone, and I said, "Yes sir or yes ma'am, I understand" even if I could not comprehend the reasons they wouldn't let me have one. I have yet to ask again for one because it is so close to my birthday (it's in a month) and because they usually trick you or pull a big box trick whenever they get you something for your birthday that you weren't expecting to get. They also usually keep on denying you until they out of the blue go to whatever place you would get something and say something like, "Hey, this is gonna be yours". Also, for the people that are asking "Oh my god, you're so young, you wouldn't be responsible enough for a phone", I skipped a grade, try my hardest in school, get good grades (as of right now, my lowest grade is a 97 in Algebra 1), are respectful, do everything when I am told, and have definitely learned my lesson on a few things that happened in fifth grade. I definitely do not mean to be self-centered, but I think that I deserve a phone because as I have read what some other kids my age have to say, I don't think that their causes and reasons are really acceptable to bring up to a parent. So personally, I think that the kids on here that are complaining about their flip phone or android shouldn't be complaining because you are just making your parents more confident in their decision of not getting you the phone that you want. Yet again, I'm not trying to be self-centered or mean, I'm just stating my opinion- and if you want to make some nasty reply, go ahead. I actually understand what some people have to say on this matter, but some were just ridiculous, like how all their friends have one or how they can't be in the group chat on Snap or whatever. I'm going to end right here because this entry is getting too long and I was just asked to go to the kitchen to eat dinner, so y'all have a nice rest of your day and I hope that you read some other comments so you can see where I satnd on this matter.

I am 15 and a sophomore in high school. My parents gave me an old Verizon flip phone that takes me a good five minutes about to send a reply back to somebody. The worst part is group messaging when you get about twenty messages in a minute and you can see all of them without getting fifty more. Can't hang out with friends, drive a car, play video games, and I have a super strict diet. My parents always talk bout how things were in their day and how life was hard, and how much of a spoiled brat I am. What should I tell my children about my childhood. Hopefully, things will change at 16

sometime we really need a pone, but it depend where are you, i am in high school and is in a public school, i don't think that i need one but because i am driving so i need a phone for map and emergency. sometimes cell phones can help us but they can "kill" us too.
"The CDC had noted a rise in the rates of both over the years 2010-2015, and found that girls were particularly at risk: Their suicide rate rose by 65% in those five years. The number of girls with severe depression rose by 58%." that just make you sad.

when i was in elementry school,my mom would not let me or my brother have smartphones. she didn´t want me and my older brother to access the internet on devices that fit in our pockets so she never gave us one. my brother is in the 9th grade and she decided to give him a cellphone on hid 16th birthday. my mom believes the internet was a bad thing that happened to the world. but in the area where i live, when ever the internet blows out, its chaos where everyones rioting and looting. my dad thinks that me and my brother should have smartphones but my mom doesnt think that. one day in 5th grade the school power went out and all the school phones were dead. every person in my class ecxept for one person had a phone. i asked every kid in my class if i could barrow their phone and the only kid who said yes was a kid who jams the charger in the headphone jack. by the time my mom answered her phone his phone died out of no where. my brother was in that florida school shooting and he got shot in the leg and couldn´t call his parents because no one wanted him to touch their phones and he was 15 and his mom would not let him have one. i still have to call my best friend kyle who has an iphone 6 over our land line when we talk about geek and nerd stuff and the latest episode of game of thrones and my mom just jumps in our conversation and asks what are you talking about. she even downloaded 3 apps that monitor our activity on each electronic device in our house and that when ever someone in our network looks up something like jason x and those aps can´t even tell the difference between porn and homework. when my brother was looking up research on the berlin wall, it froze his computer screen asking for a code. the whole techno probation thing started when my evil little brother carl looked up porn on my older brothers laptop. last december my dad and my mom were out christmas shopping and went to best buy to buy me and carl iphones and my mom yelled at my dad to not give them to us. my mom is literally the leader of our household. and as long as we are under her roof we are not getting cellphones till we re probably in collage

I know how you feel! i used to have a phone until my parents read a bunch of stuff online, and thought it was too unfit for a 13-year-old to have a phone. Ihave tried to convince them, but they think a phone brings more harm than benefit.

I am now 13 and I don't have a phone yet because my parents won't let me have one. I tried to convince them to get me one so I could stay in touch with my friends and teachers because usually our school provides information like homework or projects through social media. But they didn't really care about that. Now I only use an old laptop for the internet and I'm not allowed to bring it anywhere and I'm not allowed to use social media too. So what do I do?

I had a job at 14. I tried to convince my parents to let me pay for my own phone. They didn't budge. I didn't get one till I started driving (17... talk about protective parents!), and then very similar to the one that mpilchfamily describes, it had no texting, could make and receive calls with no problem, but it still had tracking on it so they could tell where I was. (Although I don't think my Mom knew how to use that feature, and my Dad didn't really ever use it either)

I thought my parents were the most unreasonable parents in the world. Even after I started paying my own cell bill (with the full blown texting, MMS, no GPS, and this new fanged thing called 3G), I found I didn't use it as much as I thought I would. I now use my phone for about 90% business, and 5% talking to friends and the other 5% talking to friends about business.

Which brings us back to: Ask your parents because we don't know you and therefore can't answer that for you, and why in the world do you need a phone?

You are iresponsive to people who expect you to select one of them
as the best answer !

But then you ARE trying to convince your parents
that you would be responsible using a phone.

I wonder................................

Because they can't afford it and you won't pay towards it, and you will just run up the bill without being responsible enough to care.

We can't read minds therefore we have no way to know why your parents don't want you to have a cell phone. As a parent I can say that phones are expensive and any calling plan in a year cost few hundred dollars and maybe they think that you are not mature enough to have a phone with you.

Could it be because you don't have a steady income to pay for it? Or maybe because you have not demonstrated to them (by actions, not by words) that you are sufficiently responsible to manage your usage of it, and the personal information you release to the world through it?
