I was thinking about how much would cost making a lion battery bank with enough amps/hours to feed a car audio system (stereo + sub amp). Since this setup would drain around 25-30AH I definitely want a battery bank with around 150 AH capacity to get at least around 4 hours of music at max potency. Woulds this be so expensive? I know that lion batteries are getting cheaper and cheaper, but any idea about how much would this cost? I have made a research on ebay and amazon, I could not get an average idea, and considering many brands lie about the specs, I better first ask here to hopefully get some references. Thanks.

Hello all! I need help shaping existing sewing needles into spring shapes...and need to mass produce! I have an invention idea for a sewing needle, and after countless attempts at commissioning someone to manufacture for me, I have decided to do it myself. However, as I am a layman I have no idea how to get started! I had created many prototypes by heating up sewing needles, then wrapping them around screws. I have tried many times to create a machine that could easily do this for me, however to no avail. Another problem I have is that once the metal is heated and bent into shape, I need a way to possible polish and return the shine... I have approached many shops worldwide from: sewing needle companies/ spring making companies, cnc, medical instruments, metal artists, aerospace, prototyping companies, 3d printing, the list goes on... So now i'm back to square one...any help is appreciated, thanks !

I have a large outdoor wooden table, approx 2.4m long by 1m wide, made of spalted beech. Over time it has dried out and in places there are now large cracks in the surface, about as wide as a finger, all the way through the table top (about 10cm deep). What would you advise as best way to repair these ?

So I want to build an aquaponics system, because they're awesome, but I need a way to move water about 6' verticaly. I dont have elctricity where I want to put it, and there's not going to be. The water needs to be moved from the bottom of the fish tank, to the top of a resivoir tank. I want to buy the least amount of stuff possible for thisproject, so I could use some help:D

Hello. I have a simple task to achieve, I guess, but I'm stuck. I'm using the setup from the attached image. All I need to do is to read the Speed of the vehicle using data from the obd2 k-line pin, and then to send a command to blink the brake lights when a certain decrease in speed is detected (e.g. more than 2km/h/s). I can not initialize the k-line and I am not able to red anything on the serial monitor on arduino :(. After I manage to read the raw data I am planing to figure out what's the code for turning on the brake lights by just simply pressing the brake pedal. The vehicle is an 2004 BMW E60, but I guess this is not an issue. Question... Are the TX/RX pins connected as it shod on the arduino board? Thank you. Ant help would be appreciated. I need this for a school project and a have a deadline :(((

I'm looking for ideas on how carpet pieces might be joined together into a whole (e.g. rugs made from carpet samples). The gaffer tape solution which is posted all over the web in tutorials isn't strong, only lasts a few months and doesn't work well with small carpet pieces. I've successfully sewn carpet piece in the past with fishing line (so the stitches are strong and invisible) however this technique only works well with larger pieces due to the time it takes and amount of work. Has anyone here tried any other techniques and been successful with both large and small carpet pieces? My other idea was to use wood glue to glue the pieces to a hessian sheet. I haven't tested this but the hessian base on most carpet pieces should merge well with the hessian sheet. thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Hi, I have a project that I'm trying to design/build and could use some help/advice with some of the electrical theory. I feel like this should be really simple but I'm having a lot of issues. I have done a lot of googling but can't seem to find applicable answers so I started my own thread. Any help will be greatly appreciated! If I can solve this, I will be happy to write up a detailed instructable so that others can use this information as well. The short version: Trying to build a lightweight solar panel>battery pack>UHF radio charging setup. Nominal voltage is all 12v. I'm having difficulty regulating amperage between the units. The long version: My friend is in charge of a campsite which needs to have a 2-way radio on at all times. They need to be able to charge these radios on-premise because they are out there for a little over a week at a time. A solar panel seems ideal for this application. The whole charging setup needs to be lightweight since it is a >10 mile hike into the campsite. Ideally, I would like to use an array of NiMH AA batteries because they are small, relatively cheap, and can be replaced easily if there is an issue. I am also under the impression that they handle repetitive charge/discharge cycles well. I am not married to that though so if there is a compelling reason to use lipo or something else, I am open to that. The radio: is a Motorola Radius CP200. The wall charger that comes with it outputs 14v at 1.5 amps. The battery in the radio (according to the sticker on it) is 7.4v 16.21Wh lithium ion. Setup 1 that I've been trying: I have a 12v solar panel charging a pack of AA NiMH batteries. I started with an 8-pack holder but moved up to a 10-pack to increase voltage and total mAH a little. I've been using little voltage regulators in between the solar panel and the batteries as well as between the batteries and the radio. These function as diodes and help me get the correct charging voltage. My problem is that I can't regulate the amperage. The battery pack will pull as much as it can from the solar panel, and the radio will pull as much as it can from the battery pack. What ends up happening is when I first plug the radio into the battery pack, it works fine. But after a couple minutes, the amperage skyrockets to like 3 or 4 or more amps. The voltage regulator hits some sort of thermal protection limit and the whole thing shuts down. I tried throwing this amperage regulator in there as well to keep it below 1.5 amps, naively thinking that it would just affect the amperage and not the voltage. But what happens is when it's in constant amps mode, it just cuts the voltage to compensate and keeps the total power the same. Setup 2 that I've been trying: I thought maybe since I was having issues with the 'smarts' of these batteries charging and discharging, I would switch over to USB battery packs since they have a lot of built-in protection circuitry. I got this solar charger, an older version of this battery pack, and used the same voltage regulators to step up the voltage from 5v to 14v to charge the radio. I get the same issue of high-amperage discharging of the battery pack. I tried using this step-up converter between the battery pack and the radio but it doesn't seem to work or maybe I'm not using it correctly (I can't seem to get the adjustment pots to actually do anything...). It seems like I'm thinking about current wrong or something. Any suggestions or insight into what's wrong with my approaches would be super helpful. If anyone has any suggestions for radically changing my approach, I'm open to those as well. Thanks for reading!

The end.It can be made out of anything you want. It has to be 1" squared. I'm beginning to really catch on to tiny crafts (as you may see in some upcoming I'bles), and these are too adorable to resist. My first thought is that I'd be way too impatient to work on such a small scale. My second is that I could have a complete work of art in under 30 minutes. . . Hi there, I have been working on my final bachelor project for my Industrial design bachelor. I have been working with a certain technique, which allows me to integrate wood into a backpack, which in turn can transform into a low table, for picnicking. Since I still needed to integrate a digital aspect in the whole design process, I wanted to make a digital program which allows the users to customise blueprints to their own needs. My questions is: in which way, would such a program be helpful for a DIY'er? what does the program need, in order to be useful. (other than changing certain sizes) In the pictures, you can see how the blueprints are interfaced momentarily. with the mouse, you can drag the blueprints and change its sizes. however, I feel there are more aspects which could be integrated into this program. any feedback is more than welcome! greetings, thomas

CFL bulbs need to be recycled properly due to mercury content, and there are many places: Park districts, hardware stores, Ikea, etc. that recycle CFL bulbs. However, I haven't found any place that recycles incandescent bulbs, I searched online and they say, they don't contain any toxic chemicals and can be thrown in trash and not curbside recycling. However can't the glass be reused to make new bulbs? I am sure they can reuse the glass, and the filament is probably too hard to recycle but the glass could be. I know Ikea recycles incandescent bulbs as well, but why aren't there any other companies that do? Also LED bulbs, I guess dead LED bulbs can either be returned to manufacturer if it has warranty, or in electronic recycle.

So I've got some Instructables in mind for painting a Nerf Maverick. (Wait, you said you were painting an Invicta diving case...) Yes, you're right. The case will be a custom painted case to house a custom painted Nerf Maverick for a Christmas present. However, I have some questions about how to paint it. The case has a rough outside made from what I suspect to be high-impact plastic. The inside is smooth plastic with removable foam inserts and a rubber gasket seal. I know I will have to sand the inside to make the paint stick, but my question is if the outside is already a rough textured plastic, will I need to sand it as well? Also, what paints and finishes do you suggest for painting this case? The Invicta logo on the back will need to be sanded (although I suppose I could leave it since they manufactured the case). The picture shows what my case looks like, minus the graffiti image. Thanks in advance, and God Bless!

I am looking to build a sealed gravity dispenser similar to this one.... http://www.dudeiwantthat.com/household/bar/liquor-log-booze-dispenser.asp I'm trying to figure out the best route to take, I have a beer tap I will be using. My problem arises with running plumbing in a solid piece of wood without cutting it in half. I plan to use pvc and but that means I need a 90 degree angle in the block of wood or log. Is it possible? My best idea is to drill my holes and cut a chunk out of the back that can be glued back. My next question is. How to attach a bottle? Obviously I have to have the bottle upright and place the dispenser on the bottle and flip it. But how to get a seal on the bottle that will work with different bourbon or whiskeys. Thanks on advance for any help.

Hi all,I'd like to make a bunch of small generators, like Pleech turbines, for example. Each one might only be producing a couple volts and however much power. What is the best way to connect them together to get their combined power?I was thinking that I could just give each generator its own rectifier, and then connect everything together in series. Would that be efficient?My circuitry understanding is a little limited, so a simple solution that is 90% efficient may be better than a complicated solution that's 100% efficient.... :)Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi everybody, I am working on a project to make an automatic watering system driven by arduino. I am looking for a valve which I could operate without any extra power supply but the 5V from the ARDUINO. It would be perfect if the valve could be in the range of the 6mm for tubes connections. As my project will rely on gravity for water movements, I don't want to use a pump or whatever active device. Just some standard batteries connected to ARDUINO. Do some of you know such a valve? I have looked on the net without any success. I have found loads of watering projects using arduino but none with the same phylosphy. If you know one, please let me know. Regards,

Hi, i just made a circle jig cutter for my dremel. I used the included dremel that you can see in the picture below, it basically looks like a drill bit, but it's sharp in the edges, so it can cut to the sides, thing that drill bits cannot do. I tried to cut 3/4 MDF, but it was very hard to do it, I simply had to stop the process after concluding that that's not the right bit for that job. I think I had problems because this bit is for cutting to drywall sheets instead. What do you think? does anybody know what dremel bit should I use to cut circles through 3/4 MDF? thanks.

Hello, I am interested in creating a jewelry box for my niece. The idea is to laser-cut a custom box which I think I can find templates of online and create an SVG file with some art for the laser cutter. I plan to 3D print a ballerina as well. I initially thought of running the electronics with Arduino - but prefer to keep it simple. I want to have a custom song/melody playing - I was thinking of perhaps some sort of a recording/playback speaker where I can record the song initially and then have it play back - ideas? For simplicity - do you think it is possible to run a simple circuit with a couple AA/AAA batteries, a hinge control (ideas for something that will do the trick and act as a switch are very much welcome too), a speaker, and some sort of a stepper motor/servo to spin the ballerina. I would love to get some ideas and supplies from you. This should be a pretty straightforward, simple project but I don't have much electronic experience and am not sure what to search to find the technology I need. Thank you, KoMoDo

Hi, I need to glue an acrylic sheet over a wood maze, which size is around 12x24", so there would be a lot of line to apply the epoxy over it, I think it would take me around 15 minutes of even less I am fast and prepared for it, so I was thinking in using a slow set epoxy. Please any info or advice, how slow can a epoxy be? I would be glad with a 45 minute epoxy, but will it really dry until passed that time? thanks.

I have a 50 gallon water tank in the basement and a solar tank on the roof. The roof tank is 35 ft above the basement tank and the top of the basement tank is connected at the bottom of the roof tank with 1/2 inch Pex with valves. Is there a simple way of pumping the basement water to the empty roof tank. Unfortunately I can't use city water pressure to force the basement water up to the roof. I am trying to transfer the basement water to the roof leaving the basement tank empty.

Hey everyone! My name is Michael and I have a project I'm working on: a fuse beads automatic "printer". After I got my mechanical eng. degree I was looking for a project to prove to myself it was worth it. I guess being a maker was my secret ambition, and I felt I needed some project to be proud of. While babysitting my little cousins and doing some works with Perler beads, I thought to myself: hey! this is cool- I should try making something bigger! and so, as my works grew larger, I began to wonder- can I make it automatic? What are fuse beads? These are small beads made from plastic that come in various colors, and can melt under a regular home iron. Its a kids toy- you place a pattern on a mat, iron it- and get cool results. google it! What is it supposed to do? The idea is simple: place individual beads of various colors on a mat full of small spikes according to a pattern. sounds simple, doesn't it? I think its good to first look at a 2 color (black-white) simple scheme and try to print it on a small part of the board. Once the mechanical part is finished, the real programming will start. Some numbers: The beads are about 5[mm] in diameter and in height. A typical board is 30X30 spikes. A piece could usually contains 2-10 main colors. !!STOP!!! Before you read my concept, I would like to know- how would you try to make this project? I have had this idea in my mind for over a year now, and I'm looking for new ideas. The concept so far: As I've mentioned, its been a long journey already. I am far from having a working prototype and am open to suggestions. The "printer" I designed is similar to a CNC machine: a tube has 15 beads in it. The tube is moved above the board, placing the beads. Refill will be done manually since I wish to prove the mechanics first. I made the printer with Lego and an NXT controller and engines, simply because I had it at home. I tried making a 2 axis motion using a rack and gear (with transmission), moving a tube with beads in it. To my dread, the beads do not like falling off when placed on top of one another (in the tube), so I used a third engine, converting the rotary motion into linear one, applying a small force over the tube to prevent the beads from falling, moving them to the next position, than letting go. I discovered the engines are not as accurate as I would have wanted, and the results are meh. I will add some pictures at a later time as I need to re-assemble it. Thanks a lot for reading, and I hope we can make this dream come true- lets have some fun!

Is there anything strong enough to support even some books that can be bent with pliers? If so, wouldn't it be really hard to get anything good looking? If not, how to bend? I know there are shop brakes, but aren't they only for sheet metal? And, surely you cannot make a 180 turn that small with a shop brake? Also, what gauge/material rodstock to use? Is there some way (even approximate) to relate gauge and material to weight supported? Many thanks in advance Joe

Whether you call it a shemagh, coalition scarf, keffiyeh, or ghutrah, it is an eye-catching article of clothing that has hundreds of practical uses aside from looking chic. Unfortunately, in the last couple of decades, the keffiyeh have been associated (wrongfully so) with terrorism and extremism of the Middle-Eastern sort. Yes, Islamic extremists have been known to wear keffiyat, but I'm pretty sure I've heard of them drinking milk, too. The practical uses of keffiyat are almost limitless. Aside from keeping dust and sand out of your face, they retain moisture quite well. The ShamWow has NOTHING on this age-old masterpiece. In a survival situation, they can be used to bind a wound, make a splint, prevent heat stroke, and military applications are limited only to imagination. I've heard stories of Marines using shemaghs as rifle slings, belts, and even mops for cleaning a mess hall. Anybody can buy a keffiyeh from Army Surplus, or get a bolt of fabric, cut a square of it out, wrap it around their heads, and call it a shemagh, but I'd like to be able to weave my own. Trouble is, I don't know how to weave. Are there any Instructabots here who are both experienced at weaving and willing to devote hours of monotony to making an instructable for this?

Hiya, I'm a noob. I love the look of chunk glass lamps, and like hanging swag / pendant lamps, but the real thing is ridiculously expensive. So, I'd like to make one. The wiring is reasonably straightforward, any one of the kit things would work fine. Where I'm running into trouble is how to put it together. I know it's going to be heavy, which is ok; Elephant hooks from Amazon claim they can support a hundred pounds if put into a rafter. What I'm looking for is how to make the thing to attach the glass to. A lot of the existing ones (If you search google for 'chunk glass lamp' you'll find what I'm interested in) use either molded lead or mortar. I'm kind of looking for a slightly lighter weight solution; I'd rather the weight be pretty rather than structural. An idea I originally had was something like a 3d printed frame, maybe in sections that can snap together with a network of supports to glue the glass to, to allow a thin smear of mortar or clay or something to cover it, so the light only comes through the glass. I know many of the original ones from the 60s and 70s were lucite vs glass, Big hunks of glass seem relatively easy to find, big hunks of plastic not so much. If anyone has a good source for either or both, I'd love to hear. Be gentle, it's my first time here. :) (Tried to attach a file, but I'm at work, and it looks like the network is nuking it. Just search google for 'chunk glass lamp' and you'll find dozens.)

I am in works of putting together a glass dome with a wood base and a model inside. I am looking for ideas of ways to have the glass dome lock itself onto the base and having the option to unlock. So I do not want to permanently bond it I'm trying to think of some clever way of being able to have it lock whether you twist or some other way but I'm stuck . The photo below is similar to the shape of the dome I have acquired as far as shape I will just be using a knob instead of a rope on top and then below that is the bottom base I have which is more like a plate and not as deep as that first image

I have decided to power the lighting in my house with gravity alone starting next year. The idea started here: Greener Gadgets: Gravity LampI have some ideas about how to make it possible using some existing instructables and I though I would share this to get people thinking about new ways to use gravity as a power source. Think about it, gravity is clean, constant, eternal and EVERYWHERE. I think that this instructable has some of the essential components: Cordless Drill Crank Charge BatteriesIt gives a basic example of kinetic energy being converted into electricity, but for this application the kinetic energy will be supplied by gravity instead of the hand crank. The real fun with this project, I think, is the different ways that the kinetic energy of the weight can be harnessed. The screw used by the Gravity Lamp is just one method. A weight on a rope that is wrapped around a spool or crank is another option or even something based on the mechanism of a grandfather clock. One could even imagine a single massive weight that the whole family would hoist, with the help of pulleys, every evening to power their home lighting. Who knows.....It's time to start a gravity revolution.

Hello, I am steampunking a nerfgun for my nephew and the assumption is that he will play with it. I thought I would use an acrylic clear sealant to protect the paint, but when I sprayed it, the paint krinkled -- once it dried, it became hard again. I have two more components to seal and would like to avoid this. (I sprayed the nerf with flat black Krylon spraypaidn (supposed to bond to plastic) and then dry brushed metallic acrylic paint for effect. One internet person suggested I use mod-lodge -- but the instructions say that after applying it, i should use a clear acrylic topcoat. So my question is--should I be using this extra step--or is there a paintable acrylic sealant i could use? What are best practices used by you folks?

What I would like to do is design another aluminium or plastic piece that can snap into the inside of this frame (something like the right panel in the image). The frame, once positioned in, would be a permanent fixture. I have looked at different kind of snap-fit joints but I'm not sure on what's the most appropriate design in terms of simplicity and functionality. Another issue is calculating the actual dimensions of the snap-fit joints. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
