I live in colorado and catch Western Terrestrial Garter Snakes as well as Plains Garter Snakes all the time. I have tried to keep them as pets before, but I could not get them to eat. I cannot buy food for them, so I am stuck with insects such as grasshoppers, crickets, and ants as well as worms and whatever else I may find. I want to keep another pet, but they just wont eat! What should I do?

Hi, guys. I've been looking for videos and advice on how to solder quickly, but I keep hitting a wall with my search engine giving me quick instructions instead of quick technique. Does anybody have any advice or links I could use? (I work putting together solar cells and since I just had a significant pay-cut, I need to produce more plates in the same amount of time)

Hi all! I've being thinking on how to get off grid for a while now, in the first stage to use solar power to get the energy bills go down and in second place to get my stamp on earths energy consumption, using my house in a greener way. So solar energy and wind energy are on my mind, but recently i started to think about more possibilities. Like using my crawlspace to work for me. Maybe its posible to make a wind turbine underneath the house, or use the constant temperature to cool my house during summer. I've seen plans on the internet ( and cant find them anymore... ) about using a sort off vacuum chamber that has a constand wind flow comming in, trough a system of pipes that drive a wind turbine inside. The idea is that, because of the vacuum effect, you need only a small gust of wind to power the turbine. Where i live theres always wind, sometime a little, sometimes waaay to much. The crawlspace i have isnt that high, about 50CM in hight, and during the Fall and Winter months theres a high level of water, about 25CM. Durring summer its mostly muddy sand, so there's stil a lot off cool water trapt in there. So about the idea on cooling my house, how about a water cooling system that runs trough the house? How would you guys make such systems, have you already tryed this out, and are there some enthousiastic folks out there willing to go all the way and show these idea's are doable, so everyone can make it??? Hope to hear from you soon ;-) Greets, Arie

I was thinking that the headphone jack could be used as an input for a 3-lead ECG (EKG) and used to cheaply monitor arrhythmias in remote areas (or in the field) and record and/or send these to health professionals. It needs to be able to detect milivolt impulses from a pos/neg/ground input.

Its a plumbing problem possibly requiring cutting copper pipe and soldering fittings together. Basically I need to know if the anode rod is in the same place as usual for most hot water heaters or if my John Woods hot water tank does have the anode connected to the hot water intake. If so, how am I going to save money and change the magnesium anode rod myself rather than paying a plumber 80$/hour.

What is going on? Is it normal? Does it need I dont know how to describe it so here are some pictures (first picture: complete plant) (second picture: original leaves) (third picture: new leaves/ branches)

Our home is on sand, lime, sink holes. It helps to direct rainwater away from the structure to prevent sink holes. My question is if there are recommended soil treatments for sand. If it will help to coat the perimeter with two feet of soil and sod, I'll do it. I really like landscaping and I just wanna make sure using a few feet of fertile soil and sod is an option without making things worse. Any other recommendations would be very much appreciated. Thanks all.

These folks loved their dogs so much that they made sweaters from their fur after they passed away. This was no easy task as thousands of hairs had to be harvested from brushes and carpets. The result is apparently warm and water-resistant as well as creepy, but with all the cat hair I keep vacuuming up maybe I can get a nice coat from my own home. BBC linkvia Treehugger

Hi, I’m working on a project about making society more aware of the ocean. This project is my master graduation project. The envisioned project will involve the open-source community; this is why I am looking for people to talk to on this matter and to share ideas. If you are already convinced, please send me a message. I promise you, I will not spam you to death. I am looking for people that have an appreciation or connection with the ocean and are all about DIY and open-source and are willing to share ideas with me. Some more info on the project: As I see it we (society) are very connected to the ocean, most of the everyday objects are in someway shipped across the ocean. Eventually ending up as plastic bits in the ocean. Even before the Industrial Age we’ve been exploring the world with ships on the ocean. We’ve been shipping diseases, slaves, religion and tobacco around the world in small wooden ships. The ocean also acts as the source of life, in other words, all of the creatures on land came from the ocean. The ocean provides us also with an import source of protein to feed the world; fish. The ocean houses tiny creatures called plankton that are critical for the planet. Most people don’t realize that a mouthful of seawater contains millions of bacterial cells, hundreds of thousands of phytoplankton and tens of thousands of zooplankton. Although we have this strong connection with the ocean we have yet to explore 90% of it. In our ordinary lives we’ve been so disconnected of the environment around us, the only thing the majority of people see are the beaches, the endless blue, until of course, some oilrig blows up and washes oil up on the shore. The project I am working on sees opportunity in creating a connection with the ocean somehow. This is not an easy challenge, I cannot do this alone, I am asking a community of people that think outside the box, are hands-on and are compassioned about what they do for help. Message me if you would like to be involved!

I have been researching and think a lot about mobile structures specifically campers that are light weight and highly efficient. After spending a substantial amount of time looking around to see what designs are out there I have concluded that there isn't much. This fact bothers me for a few reasons but mostly because I have a vested interests in this topic. Come march I plan to begin living in a small camper while traveling around the country for several months the only catch is I am going to build it. So my question is what idea's can you all come up with that fit within these guidelines. 1- It must be relatively comfortable for two to live in but cannot exceed 60 sq ft. 2- It must include a toilet, shower and sink as well as a space for a camping stove 3- It must be insulated and have windows for ventilation and natural light 4- It must have storage space 5- The interior must be no less than 6ft tall so that I can stand up straight while the exterior cannot exceed 9ft. 6- It must have a water tank but I do not want any electricity / plumbing and I do not intend on carrying water while in transit. As of now that’s pretty much it for requirements. I should mention that this structure is going to be towed by a ‘05 Honda civic 4 cylinder automatic so the entire unit cannot exceed 1100 lbs trailer included. I don’t wish to destroy this vehicle by towing a camper 5,000 miles around the country but I do plan to add an extra transmission oil reservoir for cooling purposes. I hope some of you find this of interest and have some ideas to share with me. I have some thoughts of how I can make this sucker but I wanted to put my thoughts out and see what someone else comes up with. Thanks and I hope you create something beautiful and functional. Sincerely, C

Well, to make a long story short, I am making a bed of poisonous plants and doing some research. It will have a fence around it and everything will be labeled so you do NOT eat it. We have lots of toddlers around.... and it would be bad if they ate anything poisonous.

Hi, people! My dog, Dale (named after Dale Evans) has had a litter of puppies in a cat/dog house! There is a sad part: All but one died because of the cold winter. That one that survived was the runt of the litter. That runt is now a chunk, because she has all the milk to her self, and she is a little bundle of cuteness! We named her Bailey..... anywho, moving right along, does anybody have a recipie for dog treats-for a nursing mother dog? I can't give them to Bailey because she is only 3 weeks old today (March 6, 2012, Born Feb. 21, 2012) and not weaned. Thanks! I might put a picture of them together.

Hello! I'm new to the forums, but I've read many instructables. I'm looking to create a solar-charging messenger bag. I decided on a powerfilm flexible solar cell that is 7.2v 200mA. Amazon has them for slightly above $50. I originally wanted to use a xtreme mac Incharge portable to store the power,(PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG) but I think that may take too much to convert it from 120v in to 7.2v in. The benefit of this item is that it has two 1w usb output charging terminals. That means faster charging. The second idea is to send the solar energy to four AA Energizer rechargeable (1.2v 2500mAh) NiMH batteries. The benefit of using AA batteries is they can be used for other things and that they can be easily replaced after running through charging cycles(I don't know the life cycle of rechargeable batteries anymore). Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated. I have the bag, will be ordering the solar cell later this week, found the incharge portable at a thrift store, and always have plenty of batteries and wires. Thanks!
