Twist open plastic balls

Hey all, I'm looking for milky/fogged/hazy (I'm not sure what the right term) twist open plastic balls, like the one on the first picture. My plan is to put some LEDs in them to make glowing balls, but all I can find is clear plastic, as in the second picture. Any suggestion where can I get something like this? The size should be about  2" (diameter). -Greg

Make the best of what you've got

Sometimes life deals you a bad card and you have to make the best of it. My father got polio in his right hand at a young age. It got him out of the army, but he had to learn to become left-handed in the process. This guy suffers from polio as well, but has been able to do this cool dance that's earned him a living entertaining tourists in Uganda. And up in Canada there's Lazy Legs who has a muscle disorder in his legs.

Using body heat as a power source

You've heard of geo-thermal energy, but what about homeo-thermal energy? I know I sure haven't, mostly because I just made up that word :) Bad portmanteaus aside, what do you guys think of this concept? Running or charging things using the body heat you generate throughout the day and especially during the night. I'm not sure how plausible it actually is, or how efficient it is, but I thought it'd be a nice project to start working on and wanted to know what you guys think of it. Is it worth-while? Too complicated? Not scientific enough? I'm interested in your feedback! :)

Periodic table closet

Hi, I'm 22 years old and I am in my master studies of chemistry. I thought would be a good time to start a collection of elements. I also want to display them properly. like in some sort of closet that you can hang to the wall. It is hard to type down where I am thinking of. The added image below is something like what I want (but in this picture they apparently forgot the Lanthanides and Actinides). How would you tackle to make something like that? I think wood is a good choice for material here (but please correct me if I'm wrong). I have a limited amount of experience of working with wood, but I figure the horizontal and vertical walls should slide into each other to make the grid. But I cannot figure out how to attach the grid to a sturdy back plate, or how to have smooth outside edges without wood sticking out to form the grid. I hope my explanations are some what clear. my explanation cortex seems not to be fully up to speed today. thank you in advance for you advice.

Hi crafters.  I'm in need of help with constructing a larp weapon, fighting fan, that could open up with a press of a button or pull of a lever N close itself upon releasing it. could any help me with the design of the mechanics n gear system I could use to make it work? It should not be of electronic nature though. Here I attached a drawing of how the weapon should roughly looks like . i'm thinking of using rounded edge aluminium flat bars(looks like flat metal ruler) as the bone for the 'blades'. Really appreciate the help.

Circuit Scribe Build Night at E4D Banjarapalya

Greetings, Just like our previous build night with circuit stickers, this build night with circuit scribes was a huge success. Many participants of our rural Banjarapalya Makerspace participated and built cool artistic projects. Although most projects were made on paper, it brought out the amazing creativity of these kids who are mostly first time learners of computer and English. Some projects: Photo sensing iron man face, blinking house, blinking E4D, Light house, Hulk face. We hope to do many more of such build nights in the months to come, introducing our village to some amazing and fun tech.  Cheers

VAWT a new way to wind generation

Guys need help to realise its feasiblity and pros & cons. This project will comprise of a renewable energy source which is controlled by TI msp430 controller by closed loop system. This renewable energy source will use a magnetically levitated vertical axis wind turbine with single phase permanent magnet alternator made by our team. There will be 3 stationary wind guide vanes/flaps of concave shape on the outer periphery of turbine. These vanes will be controlled by dc gear motor for constant wind flow and protection against high speed winds. Using perturb & observe MPPT algorithm on DC-DC boost converter, constant DC voltage for GRID integration is made. A lower energy Bluetooth module will send data on user computer about whole system parameter, hence making the whole system to be smart and hence data is saved in database. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5hYLjhO9U

FSR - Conductive foam readings

Hello! I am making a prototype of a force sensitive resistor, and i am using, to old 97%kobber coins, metal sheet and a tiny piece of conductive foam that i got from a tv-repair shop. The setup is not very good, but its a start, and i am planning the next move for better results... Now... I want some decent understanding of how the readings work, and why I get these results.. First test, are written with black, and and as you can see it, has the same amount of space between 0-1kg and 1-2kg, but 2-3 and 3-4 changes to a very small space? Why is that? Second question is, that i have used the x10, to read larger forces. 0-2,5kg and 2,5-5kg has same amount of space. Will the space decrease too, when getting further up the scale too?  - I know the conductive foam has its limits too, but just to be clear of my readings. Thanks in advance! I hope you can see the readings on the picture..!

Is Alumisol Soft Plastic food safe?

I'm looking to cast a fake monster tongue out of Alumisol Soft Plastic (Plastisol) for a costume. Obviously it will end up going in my mouth. I can't find any information anywhere about the food-safety of the solid compound. What I gather from the msds sheet is that it's non-toxic, but it's a little ambiguous. The retailer I asked couldn't find any information either. From what I can tell it's usually used to create soft rubber fishing lures, so I'd assume it's environmentally friendly with respect to not releasing toxins into the water, and its listed uses include special effects as well as medical reproductions (Of tissue). Has anyone used this type of plastisol in contact with food or the surface of your mouth before? All help is appreciated.

Help needed: Slenderman Costume

I hope you are all familiar with the slenderman mythos. If you aren't, then please check here and here for details. For a halloween party in two weeks time, I am planning on going as the slenderman for a multitude of reasons ( I am very, very tall). I am fine with the suit part, in fact I already had all the pieces before I had the idea. The only problem is the mask. You will have found out that the slenderman has a head but no hair, ears or face. I want to make it appear flesh coloured but i don't want to spend much money on this. I'd prefer a simple method like a balaclava and thin fabric or something but I don't think that would hide my eyes enough. Basically, I need ideas for a slenderman mask. Any help will be appreciated! -Jamalam

Bet you can't think of something new to do with TINE!

Hi Everyone!  We want to come up some really creative ways to use TINE, and we thought that instructables community might be a good place to get some help.  TINE is is what you would get if you combined a post it note with YouTube. We've created these little stickers called TINE tags that you can stick on anything and then use the TINE app to record a video or audio message onto the sticker. When someone scans your sticker, they'll see your message and you'll get notified. You can learn more at tinetag.com. It's totally free and our goal was to create something new and different that people could use in a lot of creative ways.  We would love to hear how you would use TINE. We recently created a DIY on how to use TINE to make any book a recoradable audio book, but we know there are tons of other ideas out there.   Let us know if you have an amazing idea for TINE and we will make a DIY for it.  Thanks,  Vik from TINE

Using a fan to drive another fan

Hi all, This may very well be a stupid question but after a quick bit of searching I cannot find an answer (which probably means it is stupid). I have been thinking about setting up a wind turbine to generate some electricity for my home. It occurred to my that it would be good if the wind turbine did not rely solely on the wind from outside so I started thinking about using another fan to blow air into the fan or fan used to create the electricity. Does anyone know if this is possible? I guess what would be ideal is if fan A was powered by the electricity produced by fan B but fan B also produced a little extra electricity that I could syphon off. This could then easily scale up to produce more power. [ fan A ] ~~~~~> [ fan B ] ~~~~~> electricity I suppose if fan A takes more energy to run than fan B can create then it won't work. Has anyone looked into this?

Laptop batteries re-use

Hello all Instructables users (who read the forums anyway) I'm hoping to get an old laptop with a broken hard drive and @ sign on the keyboard. My plan is to turn this into a media pc, running off AC continuously (when needed, obviously, not all the time). Plug in a new hard drive, a tv and (possibly wireless) keyboard with trackball (and use an old android phone as controller too, maybe - a side project), and install geexbox, and there we go... But, this leaves an old laptop battery, which AFAIK holds a perfectly suitable charge, with nothing to do. Having just got an ebook reader, and being someone who enjoys a quiet read sometimes, I would quite like to use this battery to power a light so that I can read with as little impact to the environment as possible - I reckon a laptop battery would last a fair while with a few high power LED's. I'd also like to leave it in it's original packaging so that I can recharge it fairly easily. Is this a pointless pipe dream? Is this dangerous, as it's a Li-Po battery? Can I canvas for thoughts? TIA Steve

Build Night at the Banjarapalya Makerspace with Chibitronics

Greetings from the Banjaraplaya Makerspace! We are a small makerspace located in the outskirts of Bangalore (India), in the village of Banjarapalya - https://goo.gl/maps/qz0BX . The space serves as a building as well as an alternative learning space where the local villagers can come and develop various skills in a very self-customised manner. Our participants generally belong to the under-served sections of society and have very limited exposure to technology. We help them develop skills in technology and to get into the habit of making while finding great projects online and using the low-cost equipment available at the space. The build night was a great experience. Almost everyone at the center got involved with the stickers and made greeting cards, wall designs etc. Also, this has helped us to get into the habit of writing more instructables. I feel build nights create great interest very quickly and also give a breather from the regular project work.  We are looking forward to hosting more build nights at our space. Movable Solar Panel:- Sizing limits.

Hi folks looking to build a tracking solar panel for North and South directions. I have a few drawings made up but im stuck for the maths side of things as I have a size limit I need to stick to in. I need the panel to move by 15° towards north and towards south. So a 30° movement in total. What I have in mind if an arch where the panel will sit on which can be moved with a single piston placed on the South end of the panel. This is to contract and expand to move 15° up and 15° down. My size limit is the panel must not exceed 200mm or 20cm in real money when at its maximum positions. I have assumed a 2 meter long panel (or array of panels in a frame) So because of this im a bit unsure about how to tackle the maths side of things to work out the arch's profile to meet this criteria. Anyone got any words of wisdom? The 200mm limit is the max UK law allows me to play around with the panels maximum position.

Go Green!

Just kidding!  Thanks for having me in your group.  It´s been awhile since I have been back to AA but it will always be one of my homes.  Please take time to check out my instructable for Agave Wood Personal Theater.  Hopefully, later today it will be approved for the Wood Contest (still waiting). If any of you visited the UM botanical garden this past summer you may remember their agave americana was in bloom after 80 YEARS of growth and waiting.  Here´s a link http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2014/07/u-m_botanical_gardens_80-year-_1.html . My project was made using the same variety of agave and with the flower stalk and thorns.  In addition, I used nopal cactus (prickly pear) and a homemade wax to finish it.  Thats´s it.  It is 100% natural and vegan.  I know these words can make some squimish but for real when was the last time you could say that about technology? Please visit my project and feel free to comment:  I would love to find collaborators to work with from your organization when I visit AA in the summer. GO GREEN!  GO BLUE!

Wasn't sure where to post - Sewing machines.....how to know which one?

Not sure if this is the right place within the forums or even the right forum to ask (I'm sure the latter isn't the case actually). I'm looking for a sewing machine but with so many options out there don't know what I need or should be looking for. I know I'd like to be able to sew heavier materials....not likely as heavy as canvas but nylon webbing, upholstery thickness type materials and the like. I've had a few sewing machines through here over the past six years. One was good but old and clunky. Unreliable. Then the next two were bargain deal of the day at local retailers. Is there a guide anywhere online (or here) or can anyone give me some direction. I feel like this is one place where you get what you pay for and am prepared to invest in something good but if you don't really need to break the bank then why would I? Any help is appreciated. I've been stewing on this for easily 6 months. -KD

Milk Crates - not as green as you think

I know milk crates are a really sturdy container and popular for a lot of "green" projects. The problem is that they're stolen.  They belong to the dairy whose name is printed on the sides.  Dairies reuse these crates.  They don't discard them, contrary to popular belief. Reusing them would be green if they were discarded.  Sadly, dairies must keep replacing their stolen milk crates.  That means more resources used.  The milk crates outside stores aren't being thrown away; they're awaiting pickup from the dairy driver. Even damaged crates belong to the dairies.  They send them to be repaired and continue to use them. http://www.gotmilkcrates.com/myths-and-misuse.html

Help reducing energy bills in rented house?

Hello! I have lived in the same house for the past two years, and in the winter our energy bills get ridiculous. It is an old house, the main part being built in 1902. We plan on doing the bubble-wrap window insulation on every window in the house and adding some weather stripping, wearing layers ourselves, and I plan on getting an electric blanket in my room to turn on just before I go to bed, and turn off once the bed is heated up. (My room is the only room on the 2nd floor and gets very cold. The previous tenant of this room used a space heater, but I think they are pretty inefficient.) Are there any other cheap ways to lower heating costs? They guy that owns our house is really stingy, and I highly doubt any requests for better insulation or a newer thermostat will be answered. Thanks in advance!
