Sanding wood smooth without losing rustic saw marks

I've searched for an answer but can't find one. Hoping someone can help me out with this. I recently picked up some old wood boards, about 3" thick, 4' long, and a foot wide. They're fairly old and have that warm weathered look of old raw wood. On one side you can see the nice circular saw marks from when they were milled. They're also very splintery, and I got plenty of splinters when I moved them. My goal: preserve their rustic beauty while making them into usable wood for furniture. I want the surface smooth enough that splinters aren't an issue. How can I sand the boards so they are smoother a micro level, but don't lose the beautiful saw marks? Ideally I'd keep that weathered color, but I suspect I'll lose at least some of that due to sanding and will have to fake it with stain. Thanks a ton for any help! Josh

Can you use a Plaster mold as a Blow mold?

I wanted to make a hollow plastic shape & not able to afford a metal blow mold. Can I use a plaster mold with wood reinforcement as a substitute for the metal one?The Idea is to heat up a plastic bottle that can fit in the mold cavity & slowly blow it up with an air compressor. You think this might work, or do you think I may need more reinforcement in the plaster?

White particles in water?

Ok, this is now driving me crazy. When I pour a glass (empty glass, no ice yet) of water (filtered, old filter) the water is clear. Pour over ice and big puffy white flakes appear. At first, I think that there must be crap in my ice. So I buy a silicone ice cube tray and use filtered water to make ice cubes. Second iteration: filtered water over filtered ice. Results: BIG FLUFFY WHITE FLAKES. So, that didn't work. My next thought was that maybe I messed up with the ice cubes. So, I switched to distilled water for the ice cubes. Third iteration: filtered water over distilled water ice cubes. Results: BIG FLUFFY WHITE FLAKES. Again I found myself with nasty debris floating in my water. What's next? Oh, maybe it's the detergent I used to wash my glasses. So, I wash a glass by hand with Dawn soap. Fourth iteration: filtered water over distilled water ice cubes. Results: you guessed it... BIG FLUFFY ****** WHITE FLAKES. Gotta say, it makes me want to pull out my hair! I just don't get it. So, here's my question: what's causing the white flakes? I read somewhere that cold temperatures can cause certain salts (not table salt) to precipitate out of solution. This can also be the case with Magnesium and Manganese. Does anyone else have a solution? I just want to drink some nice clear water. I thought for sure a Brita filter would do it for me.

How do I tell if an 8th grade boy likes me?

Hi. I'm in 7th grade, but I like this guy and he's in 8th. He and my bestfriend, who is also in 8th, used to go to a different school together in 5th grade, and they dated. She likes someone else now, btw. But he had asked her out again the first week of school and she said no. Anyways, a few weeks ago my best friend asked him (with my permission) if he liked me. He said maybe. Oh, and we hang out in a big group at school (like during lunch) in a big group of 7th-11th grade people. My bestfriend and the guy I like both hang out in this group. But later him and my best friend talked again and my best friend said that he said he did like me. So my best friend told me that and said that he wanted to talk to me, so I went up to him and he nodded and me and walked away from the people he was talking to and walked with me across the field at school. I honestly cannot forget the way he looked at me when we were walking. I just wanted to melt. But then when we got somewhere by ourselves in the field where nobody would hear what we were saying, he just stood there and didn't say anything. The only thing he did say was "I guess she told you." and I was like, "yeah." So we walked back over to everyone else together and then the bell rang so we had to go back inside.  After school I talked to him again and asked him if it was true about what he said, and he said "maybe" again. Then he had to leave, but he was acting all cute and stuff before he left. <3 The next week we sat on the bus together and he was being really nice to me and all that. And he watched me put on chapstick, lol.  And then last week someone was like, "I think you guys are gonna get married when you're older!" we were laughing together at the time, so the kid that said that (we both know him)  made us shut up as soon as he said that. Then he kinda got awkward during the rest of the day... Sorry that was so long! Anyways, what do you guys think? Should I keep trying to win this guy over? Or what do you think?  Thanks!

How could I tell if someone installed a phone tap, camera, or voice recorder in my room?

When I leave for work, I sometimes leave my bedroom window open. There is a medium sized gap between the screen about the size of your fist. Is there a way I could tell if someone has tapped my house? Recently my Samsung Flat-Screen has been very snowy and I remember that you could tell is something has been tapped because they interfere with your tv. The house I just moved into also has a wire panel outside my window which you can reach. My room is first floor, please help. I cannot sleep. I also read that you can tell just if you can pick up RF signals coming from the device. Can someone give me a schematic for an RF Signal detector? I can't afford the commercial ones, I once read a stat that if you suddenly wake around 2am or 3am there is %80 chance of someone staring at you. Your body naturally senses this somehow. Well, when I looked at my window, I saw a light then after a few seconds it was gone. I went outside and I heard a couple of cans fall over and my fence my shaking like it was moved. My gate is usually locked but it is a reletively short fence. I haven't slept for days. I can't stand it. I'm going today to buy some black curtains as these cheap plastic blinds aren't cutting it

Mariko Kusumoto

I have been trying to create color stripes in the same manner as Mariko Kusumoto. Cotton and silk thread have not worked. I think I need a different tool to apply polyester dye or different thread. The second image is messy but it was to test the strength of the dye on the bubbles. I think my problem now is how to draw the lines using polyester dye before steaming.

Microsoft Photodraw - does anyone use it any more?

I have Photodraw 2000 on my computer from several years ago - I copied it onto my newer computer and I use it all the time to add text, borders or effects and to correct old photos or erase backgrounds.  I use my photos for various purposes, for teaching and family use, so it's good to be able to do lots of things with the photos in just one simple program I love Photodraw- it has so many uses and is easy to use. I never got the hang of using layers as in paint.net (which I've tried ) and Photoshop (which seems so expensive and complex). Does anyone else still use Photodraw or am I hanging on to a dinosaur here?

Adjustable Bridge

I have an Epiphone acoustic guitar that I really like, my girlfriend gifted it to me after her uncle gifted it to her (she doesn't play, fingers are too small). It's the FT-130. It basically has two large screws, one on either side of the bridge, If anyone is familiar with this style of adjustable bridge can you please either tell me how to use it or send me a link to a site that will? the action is pretty low on the high strings and I'm getting a lot of buzzing (more than I should). Thanks for any help you can give!

Can a silver necklace be used like Colloidal Silver ? Answered

Collodial Silver (silver ions in suspension - usually water) is supposed to have antiseptic properties. Do you think it would be enough to simply place a piece of solid silver jewellery into water to get more or less the same effect - even if the item was left in solution for, say, a week or so? Thanks.

Has anyone ever made a room furnace with a light bulb? I've heard of using light bulbs contained in a metal box. Answered

Any ideas. This principle could work along the same lines as an oil hot water heater pumped through a radiator (you know those 300 lb.+ radiators from older houses), but using the bulb in place of the hot water.. If it was portable, that would be great. I could make a nice cover or wood cabinet around it myself. What would be a good metal to line it with that could magnify the heat of a light bulb. Obviously, this would need to be a safe product. Getting a little warm on the outside is not a problem in our home. I mostly just need some idea as to what metal to use to magnify the heat of the bulb. Thank you in advance for any help or ideas.

Wanting to dye orange-wheat work boots black but not sure what material they're made of

They look like knock off Timberlands or those typical construction work boots. They're not a brand I've heard of (ShoeVibe "Tan Fly Ankle Boot") so I'm having a hard time even finding the manufacturer online and only finding out of stock retail options. It's definitely not leather and it doesn't appear to be faux suede. The description on a site I found said "man made" upper and lining. I'm basically just wondering if I could use black shoe polish to dye them or if I need to actually dig deeper into this material thing and get shoe dye.

Is it possible to make your own electroplating solution?

Is it possible to make your own electroplating solution? Couldn't one simply toss some atomized copper dust from the sculpture supply store into a hydrochloric acid solution, and let it dissolve? If so, what other chemicals are necessary, and what approximate proportions should they be? I'm thinking quick and dirty here, specifically for electroforming medium sized objects. Thanks!
