I just recently joined Instructables, and I'm looking for cheap (not necessarily simple) projects that involve mechanics or making anything out of easily found materials. Something like LostRite's hidden blade or this Mechanical Hand. I'm in high school and don't yet have a job, so many of the projects i find are out of my budget. Thanks for any of your suggestions!

Hi! I'd like to make banners for a fundraising event. I have a 60cm plotter I'd like to use with a pen to do the strokes, something I've already done in the past, but the problem is not here. After that, I'd like to fill the stroke region, like letters and logos, but I don't want to use 10 marker pens just for one letter, do you know what I could use to make nice, cheap and fast fillings ?

I like making these snow globe thingies, or just oil and glitter in a bottle. They fall slower when you use oil rather than just plain water, and I saw someone recommend baby oil. However, its a bit expensive just for this use, especially the colorless one. So I'm looking for any type of oil I can use for this project, that is cheaper than baby oil. As long as its clear/colorless.

I want to make a relatively small hammock stand no more than 6 to 7 feet in length for my dorm room. It should also be able to collapse easy for storage purposes. done any one have any plans that would allow me to do that? i was thinking about building it out of 1-11/4 PVC but that might be too flexible and break. ( i weigh around 170 lbs). thx guys

So i was going to make a desk. I was gonna make it about 2x3 and make the top out of two pieces of plexiglass, with about a 1 inch hollow area between them. I was gonna put some lights in that area. However, Plexiglass is costing a bit more than i want to spend. so I found this: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202653810/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId;=10051&catalogId;=10053 Its ALOT cheaper. However, can it support a decent amount of weight probably? No ones gonna be sitting on the desk or anything. I would say NEVER more than 50 pounds on it, but 25 is probably gonna be the maximum, and not even that most of the time. (just gonna have my laptop and stuff on it, maybe some textbooks). And im assuming a blue light LED would shine through it fine..I kind of want the frosted look (would sand it down a little bit to get rid of the "bubbles") to give it an effect similar to the lights in this: https://www.instructables.com/id/LED-Glass-Desk/ except without the notifications and stuff.

Hello! Ive been doing all kinds of research and planning on making man-made islands for a few years now, and I had a thought on one method inspired by Thinkenstein's Instructable on Trash Rocks. He has been able to make floating rocks using plastic bottles filled with air, nylon fishnet bags, and covering the combination in cement. Tadaa, Floating Rocks. But after seeing his instructable about this, would anyone think it to be possible to make a large floating land mass using plastic bottles of 16oz and above, nylon fishnet bags, and cement? I think it sounds doable, but that's just whats been put on paper.

Hi all, I'm part of a project where we're making soft sculptures to cover a tree trunk. It's for a sustainable festival, so we have to be mindful of re-using and recycling in our artwork. The problem we're having is with stuffing. It's only a temporary artwork for 5 hours so I'm not too concerned with waterproofing, but trying to make the sculptures look good when stuffed with shredded newspaper, plastic bags or chopped up old clothes is difficult. I'd really appreciate any ideas you can suggest! Thanks.

I have seen $10-20 pH meters for testing soil in garden stores, home improvement/hardware stores. I was wondering do these give accurate readings? I am looking for a cheap and accurate way to test pH. Any suggestions even for other ph testing methods are appreciated. Thanks!

I'm in need of a portable freezer to freeze ice in an ice vest to allow usage when I don't have access to a conventional freezer. I know that there are retail portable freezer that run up to the hundreds. I had the thought of using dry ice in some manner. However, I'm not familiar enough with freezers or dry ice to even know where to start on this kind of thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please help! I need room to work in. I live in a very crowded double wide with 4 kids and a spouse. I need space to myself and my artwork before I go mad or am forced to quit my beloved arts. I paint, make jewelry - both metal and pottery- this means fire and small kilns. I have a back porch and it is very small with an roof over half of it. I have almost 0 money. How can I have a workspace? With the kilns I can work thru winter (in the south- sorry to be a stereotype). I was thinking hoop house with one side being the roof of my house. Perhaps extending the porch, with donated or used lumber- to give me more space- but the enclosure is an issue. I need light and I need to be closed off from bugs. I can lay in a window cooling unit and a space heater. Please- Ya'll are geniuses! Please tell me how I can do this. I will go mad if I cannot have my art and my space! S

I am looking to make a tunnel for relatively cheap that my nephews can play in. Any ideas?
Hi, I am currently 15 years old and live in Warsaw, Poland. You see, in my family we never sticked to the "Everyone gives presents to everyone" scheme. My parents would get us presents, as well as give them to each other. I want to change it this year, since i feel like a total jerk this way (receiving gifts and not giving any) Overall: I need to get a present for my father, mother and brother, whose details will follow. I don't want the overall cost of the gifts to surpass 100PLN (around $35?), nor for them to be the cheap "glue some felt to some cardboard and write some nice sentences" DIY christmas gifts. I would like them to be original, maybe just a creative, slightly changed everyday object. They should not be consumable (cookies, bath salts etc.), they should be useful but nice (no coasters or stuff like that) They can not require any help, since they have to be a surprise to my family. I would like them to be preparable in my bedroom, without use of any complicated tools (including sewing machines and glue pistols). Also, no photo albums or such. Father: My dad is a business-ish person interested in a variety of subjects, like chess, computers, programming, engineering, books, movies and all that stuff. He works a lot, uses an LG Viewty Snap, drives a Ford Mondeo, occasionally wears glasses. I would like his gift to be very practical and elegant, something he could take in his pocket and maybe use throughout the day (A personalised business card holder, maybe?) Mother: My mom is the head of a small internet newspaper centered about building, ways of saving energy, construction and such. She spends most of her day at home. She likes knitting, sewing, and would surely love a simple gift that took some effort to make (some creative, practical thing to hang on the fridge? A hand-sewn pouch, stuffed animal or something?) or that makes the flat nicer (maybe a blanket?) Brother: My brother is 18 years old, he studies sound directing at Warsaws' Music University. He's a lazy and messy person who plays the piano and performs at a small band on keyboard. A very artistic guy, his bedroom is full of synthesisers, cables, wires. He probably will not appreciate any gift, so be sure to give me some more suggestions - i have no idea what he might like. His gift should be minimalistic and creative - it does not need to be very useful. Oh well, i kinda wrote too much up here. If it was too long for you to read, i need a christmas gift idea for: My dad (businessman) My mom (pretty much a housewife) My 18yo brother (who studies Sound Directing) The added price of the three gifts should not go over $35, they can't be consumable, they need to be simple enough to be done inside my bedroom so it's a surprise. Thanks in advance for all your suggestions, i will give any information needed for your ideas :)

I'm looking to make a prop soon that is basically a backpack with a small screen on it. Said screen alters between two states: green with a smiley face, or red with a rather angry looking face. I am looking to make it so I can alter said screen between the two states, for as cheap as possible. My first thought was to have three pieces of plexi: one with the smile, one with the angry face, and one blank, putting the blank one in the middle. Then, light the edges of the other two with the corresponding colors. However, I don't know how well that would work, or if there is a better option. Thanks in advance!
