I want to bend some clear crystal polystyrene, how do I do it?

Poly is from CD jewel boxes. Need to bend to a curved aerofoil shape. Hair dryer? Microwave? Oven? Any ideas welcome. Ray

Making a VAWT generator.

Hello all,  I am after some advice from the experienced wind turbine guys n gals. I intend building a VAWT and gearing the axle out to get 3000rpm approx. This is to drive 2 or 3 car alternators and charge a battery bank to supply house electricity. I will run as much as poss on 12v but will use a inverter to power tv and fridge. I just want to know would i need a charge controller to make sure the battery banks are protected/not over charged. I am not a electronics lad so would like some advice and what is best and safest way to do this. Many thanks lads n lasses. Bill

Magnet strength for DIY VAWT

Hi, does anyone know if it is better to get stronger magnets for a DIY turbine? Is it always better, or only to a certain degree?

VAWT a new way to wind generation

Guys need help to realise its feasiblity and pros & cons. This project will comprise of a renewable energy source which is controlled by TI msp430 controller by closed loop system. This renewable energy source will use a magnetically levitated vertical axis wind turbine with single phase permanent magnet alternator made by our team. There will be 3 stationary wind guide vanes/flaps of concave shape on the outer periphery of turbine. These vanes will be controlled by dc gear motor for constant wind flow and protection against high speed winds. Using perturb & observe MPPT algorithm on DC-DC boost converter, constant DC voltage for GRID integration is made. A lower energy Bluetooth module will send data on user computer about whole system parameter, hence making the whole system to be smart and hence data is saved in database. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC5hYLjhO9U

Wind Turbine help?? Answered

Okay, so I'm making a small Wind Turbine to charge a couple of Rechargeable AAA batteries. But my problem is that the motor I'm using only generates voltage when moving clockwise and one of the fin designs I'm using spins it counterclockwise... So I tried a VAWT designs and it spins it clockwise but not very fast... I'll post pictures so you can see the designs. Thanks!!

I have several large swamp cooler rotors, would these make decent VAWT rotors if put directly onto an old alternator?

Sorry, I should have said Centrifugal Fan rotors, they are commonly seen in use with car air conditioning systems, leaf blowers, and evaporitive coolers (Swamp coolers). I'll see if I can find a picture or a video of them in use after I get back this afternoon.

Wind turbine! Gear motor?

I'm thinking of making a VAWT and saw a 115v Bodine gearmotor for $30. Been looking all over for the popular Ameteks. Are gear motors feasible?

Question by fifh89

building a small VAWT to charge 12v battery, which motor to use? PM 3791 12v 96 or 60 hz 115v PH1 1,1 anp 1.5 hp?

I took apart an old air conditioner for the turbine blades and the second motor is from the air conditioner. The DC motor is from a salvage shop, I don't know any more about it except it was made in Canada. I am a long time out of school and not very handy so please don't suggest I wire my own alternator/generator. I know I am ignorant, but I hope you will keep answering my questions until I build the dang thing. Thanks John S.

Is it possible or make sense to run an AC wind generator directly into an electric heater ?

I was wondering if it would be possible to run an AC generator directly into an electric heater or water heater instead of using a DC generator to batteries. If this is possible or if makes sense to do, what would be the best motor/generator to use with a VAWT system. TIA.
