Food as art

A few photos from the BBC -Photographer Carl Warner has painstakingly captured all kinds of food in a series of still lifes. He says his 'Foodscapes' were partly inspired by healthy eating campaigns. But they have not persuaded his own children to take up the five-a-day pledge. The photos must be shopped in some way, because they were apparently "taken in layers", so that part of the image didn't wilt whilst the rest was being prepared.Link to other images: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7186989.stm

In a bid to reinvigorate their town, the Japanese town of Inakadate has started creating elaborate images in their rice paddies by growing different colored varieties of rice. Art as an investment vehicle.

I find it hard to say anything nice about the The Artist's Pension Trust (via the BBC) and I'm finding it equally difficult to completely denounce it. I suppose many of my misgivings may have more to do with the general state of art within contemporary culture than with the trust itself. Anyway, decide for yourself at their official homepage. Or just take the New York Times' word that the Artist's Pension Trust is infused with "a healthy dose of socialism.""Such informal trading systems, where young artists swap their own work for art made by others, has always served this dual purpose of combining pleasure with diversified financial security. The idea is that at least one of the group will become a recognised and valued artist, and as such a broad arts portfolio is likely to contain at least one valuable work of art. Now, a multilingual globetrotting financier has formalised the system, making a quantum leap in the process, in the form of the Artist Pension Trust." -- BBCHowever, if you really want to make a good investment, let the BBC show you How to Spot a Banksy for fun and profit.

art: bowling balls

I began collecting a few bowling balls with the intention of making decorative art in my flower beds. I have a neighbor across the street who undoubtedly has so much disregard for me that he reported me to the city code enforcer who said bowling balls were against code. I had a supervisor come and look at my yard and the bowling balls and he said it is art. The other code enforcer has required that I "anchor" them down. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm sure no matter what I do the neighbor will not like it. He hates my trees. I have humongous oaks and lots of plants and shrubs. He has complained for 16 years now. He sits on his front porch and watches everything I do. He reported I had rats. They found the rats nest on his property. He claims the termites come from my home. Believe me, I have a small brick ranch that I do all the upkeep on. I think he just can't stand it that he can't tell me what to do like he does the rest of the neighbors. I'm a woman-maybe that's his problem. Anyway, how do I "anchor" my bowling balls without taking away from the art of them in my flowerbeds? Please help me. I want to abide by the city codes.

Awesome art prints

I was doing some holiday shopping online, and I found Veramar Naval Products... They are offering free shipping for the holidays on orders over $40. I found that pretty easy to do since they now have the work of Nate Ostrow, who is just incredible. They also have another site entirely devoted to music and pop culture art prints in addition to the military and naval artwork. They have like Hendrix and Hepburn and all sorts of cool stuff that's worth checking out. I thought this was quite the find and figured I would pass it along - happy holidays!

Kinetic art help...

Hi! Longtime lurker,1st time poster. I am wanting to make a kinetic work that kinda resembles ghosts... fabric that moves similar to this but more covered like it's someone with a sheet over themselves... I have bought nitinol (.15" gauge), burnt my fingers applying electricity directly (LOL) and thought I'd try a mechanism to pop up similar to a jack in the box or whack a mole, or a cam and follower. I really love the NiTi but I am open to any suggestions from any resourceful peeps here. I am gonna go shopping for toys to open up sometime this week for ideas but in the meantime... The main features I want are: random activation, pop up go back to original position, inexpensive... Thank you in advance for ANY insight, ideas. Much appreciated. Yours truly, The Lurk

Ice Art Alaska: San Francisco Art Institute Team

INTRODUCTION:In March 2008, a team of five graduate students from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) are determined to participate in the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. Four sculptors will compete in the Multi-Block Classic event, which involves carving over 700 cubic feet of ice in under 132 hours. Additionally, we are bringing one archivist who will record and write about our experience. We seriously consider Ice Art as an opportunity to enhance our artistic knowledge and ingenuity, as well as to positively impact the communities involved.TEAM:Jesse Hensel, Team CaptainEric ReyesStephanie InagakiJesse WaltonLaura Rogers, ArchivistCONTEXTIce Art brings together communities from various countries -consistently from Canada, Norway, Russia, Japan, and China - and at all career levels including professional artists, students, and local residents. Each team has a different approach. Some will celebrate traditional craft while others will pursue edgy artistic expressions. Some will produce monumental forms while others will carve small-scale objects. For six long days, the SFAI team will work intensely together in the harsh Alaskan environment. During morning and evening meals they will reenergize and discuss different carving techniques and landscape traditions with other participants. This experience will undoubtedly benefit those in the competition in addition to educating and entertaining audiences worldwide. For general information about the competition visit: http://www.icealaska.com/COMMUNITY PARTNERS1. (Romantic) Post Office Art

After seeing hay_jumper's post office art and revenge of the post office art instructables, I decided to give it a whack. Just so proper respect is given where due please note that l read hay's instructables once and remembered the ideas several months later that's how awesome this idea is.I wanted to make a creative valentine's card for a special friend who happens to be very very talented at all that creative stuff that I tend to suck at. I figured the best way to impress her was to FAKE IT!I basically copied what hay did except l most importantly used a heart-shaped fence to make a specific shape and a (much) smaller stylus than his second project. The pictures should explain most of this madness. The stylus was made with two square layers of foam i cut and PLENTY of glue (in between layers as well as in/around pencil holes.Aftermath: I decided to send it anonymously and she called the middle man (who I used to add further anonymity as well as shipping time) and told her how awesome it was and asked for my phone number. THIS SHIT WORKS, GENTLEMEN. TAKE NOTE!

Idea for Social Electronic Art

Hi everyone, I have been working on an idea for a new type of electronic creative art form. Social media has increasingly become cloud and computer-based, enabling people to network and share ideas and concepts online with others from around the world; this community is an excellent example of the power of electronics in fostering shared creativity. Art has always been an important aspect of society, bringing people together through the power of self-expression. In recent years, graffiti parks have become a popular method for communities to express themselves in a constructive way. In the area of electronics, circuitry and robotics have become increasingly accessible through open-source programs such as Arduino, enabling anyone to build complex and beautiful projects in their own garages (or anywhere!). This idea focuses on blending the social aspect of conventional art mediums with the untapped potential of electronic technology. One new technology in particular that has taken the first step towards merging the different fields of creativity is conductive ink and paint, created by Bare Conductive. This graphene-based material enables users to paint circuits and electrical systems onto most surfaces, opening up the entire world as a building area. Essentially, this is the focus of the idea- creative communities making the world their canvas through the power of conductive ink and open-source electronics tools. Imagine the possibilites! Walls covered with lights that can be activated by touching a drawn image, buildings covered with playable arcade games and interactive media, and childrens' parks with community-sourced learning tools on the play area! Of course, there's another aspect here; the social possibilities. See a circuit that someone didn't ever finish, or a piece of electronic art that you wanted to expand? Whip out your Arduino kit and ink bottle, and draw it in! Every wall would tell a story, and it would never stop growing. Our imaginations would be the only limit... What does everyone think of this idea? Let me know any thoughts or input you might have!

Why do people hate art?

My "How to Make Art" Instructable has 4 negative ratings thus far (in less than a week). This makes me angry. It's not that terrible of an instructable. In fact, I think it's one of my better ones. I am lead to believe that one of the following is probably true: 1) People don't like seeing drawings of nude men on their homepage. 2) There are some boring self-righteous artists types visiting Instructables who clearly know nothing about great art. In fact, I bet they spend all of their time, at home -- alone -- telling their seven cats how Georgia O'Keefe was the greatest American artist. So, if you don't hate art, please give my instructable a good rating. If you do hate art, why are you clicking on it to begin with? There are plenty of other lesser Instructable for you to denigrate.
