What car is this? Answered

Http://www.hulu.com/search?query=Thunderbolt+And+Lightfoot&st;=0   I just saw this movie and there was much debate over the make of this car.  Granted the link is a dark picture, but at 1:30:24 and 1:35:33, there are some shots of this car.  If you could kindly take the time I'd be most grateful....... not to mention you would settle an argument. Thanks

selfcontained electric car?

I had a few ideas on how to make more efficient cars. First off why is it we have NO generators being used while stuffs rotating. Take a small generator with a rubber drive point...like there a chain or belt would go... and place that on the tires. This is a friction driven generator which means that it would not work well in the rain. These...if done right... could keep the car running and then keep the battery charged. Using the battery only for stops. I also think we need to figure out a way to put a coil in the drive train somewhere. Making it to where when the car stops the coil is wound tight, when the car takes off again the coil could unwind and help the car take off. this feature added to gasoline engines would help cut the cost of gas greatly, not to mention emissions.

Making a hybrid car?

In the early 70s Mother Earth news advertised a kit to make a hybrid car using a 5 horse engine to run an alternator that fed a battery bank which in turn ran an airplane engine starter motor coupled to the transmission shaft. Is that still viable? Or does anybody have that set of plans for sale?

Electric car battieries

Hello, I need some help. With gas prices getting to an excess of $3.50 in Texas, I have decided to make the switch to electric cars. I was watching a show on TLC the other day about a guy in California who converts cars to electric. He converted an old heavy-as-can-be Camaro into an electric car that could peel out. I found a website that sells conversion kits for all kinds of cars called Cloud EV. I want to buy the heavy car kit, but the only snag I hit was this: I need 60 batteries to get a day's power, but it will cost about $3000 to $5100 (1949.6978 Euros to 3314.48625 Euros)!!! Can anyone help me find a cheaper source of batteries? Car batteries are just to expensive. Thanks.

Build an Electric Car

Want to convert your car to all-electric on the cheap?  Check out bennelson's awesome Instructable, Build your own Electric Car!  Ben walks you through the steps of converting a Geo Metro (purchase price $500, gas-requiring parts sold for $550) to run on a forklift motor and 6 12V batteries.   According to his calculations, the car gets the equivalent of about 130 mpg.  Not bad for an entirely self-taught mechanic! Check out the video of his converted Metro going up hills: Sounds easy, right?  So when are you planning to convert your car or truck? This post has been sponsored by Pepsi. Flying car idea

I was thinking about building a flying car that would have most wingspan hidden under the car (pops out when activated) and the doors would be the tips. (What used to be the back doors would roll over van-style, and the back would otherwise be covered by sheet metal) In the back, there would be two vertical rudders and the spoiler would be cut into flaps for horizontal rudders. The thing would overall be powered by two helicopter jet engines. Once the flight system is activated, the gear shift (auto trans) would turn into the throttle, and the gas/brake pedals would turn into the rudder pedals. The idea is to make a flying car that still (when wings are stowed and trunk cover is closed) looks like a normal car. The question: is this possible?

Second Semester Car Drawings

Well, the second semester is pretty much over and I'm getting hit hard with last second work so I figured I would put these up now for some input. If you didn't see my first semester drawings please do, but if you did you know that my company that I band all these designs to is called Veloci. Veloci is the name of the car company I would own someday in the very far future. If you like what I drew and are going to make one of these, tell me. I don't really care if you do make one but I would like to see how it would look in real life or scale size. As far as the cars here I designed: A pickup truck designed like a Bugatti Veyron, Dboye82 's H-pulse concept, Ford Focus ZX3 with Lambourghini styling, a semi-truck, and my company's first golf cart! Please tell me what you think of my cars and if you have any suggestions for cars feel free to comment. I always like new/unique ideas.

Green and sexy car show

The Morgan LIFE car will get it's first UK airing at the Eden Project next weekend. The Morgan LIFE car, probably the sexiest green car in existence is a fuel cell-powered electricsports car built by Morgan Motor Company and startup efficient transport company RiverSimple. Research and development is by QinetiQ, Linde, Cranfield University and backed by BERR. This is its first UK outing.Four stacks of fuel cells convert the hydrogen fuel into electricity to run a super efficient motor generator attached to each wheel. Energy recovered in braking is stored in ultra capacitors rather than batteries, and end to end the performance is estimated to be equivalent to a 150mpg petrol engine. With a top speed of 85mph, 0-60 in less than 7 seconds and a 250 mile range, the mix of technology has been packaged by Morgan to add yet another unique twist to the project. Using only the best and lightest materials, aluminium, wood and leather, the Morgan DNA is clearly visible, adding a new dimension into an environmentally sensitive concept. And Lotus will be showcasing their most powerful Exige yet:The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel is the most powerful version of the Lotus Exige ever, and it runs on any mixture of gasoline, bioethanol and methanol. It is the latest research vehicle from Lotus Engineering, the consultancy division of Group Lotus plc.Emerging technologies will allow alcohol fuels such as methanol, already a proven internal combustion fuel, to be made synthetically from CO2 extracted from the atmosphere. A fuel derived renewably from atmospheric CO2 would be a key piece of the jigsaw allowing society to transfer to sustainable, renewable, carbon-neutral internal combustion.Lotus Engineering is researching the use of sustainable synthetic alcohols as future fuels for introduction within 15 - 20 years. The Exige 270E Tri-fuel is part of Lotus' research into the complex combustion and calibration processes for powering vehicles on mixtures of alcohol fuels and gasoline, which will be important for a successful transition from today's fuels. Its flex-fuel technology gives a practical route to the introduction of sustainable synthetic fuels. Using an alcohol sensor in the fuel system and the advanced Lotus engine management system, the Exige 270E Tri-fuel runs on any mixture of gasoline, bioethanol and methanol. This is all happening at the Eden Project in Cornwall, one of the UK's flagship environmental projects, with some of the world's largest biodomes built into an old claypit. All the major manufacturers will be flaunting their newest, greenest models including Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Volkswagen, SEAT, Honda, Axon, Lotus, Saab and Morgan. Vectrix's electric motorcycle will also be on show, and the hydrogen-powered Morgan LIFE car will make its first public appearance (in the UK).There will also be exhibitors demonstrating how to maintain and even insure your car in a greener way. One stand will feature a driving simulator that they claim can teach you to drive in such a way that your carbon emissions are cut by 15%, there will be a pedal-car race track for the kids, and a Grow Your Own car trail around the rainforest. We visited last Summer, and can recommend it to anybody. If your not aiming for a specific event, go on a Tuesday (it's quieter) and check opening times - opening times on some days are several hours longer than others.Eden Project

Well, Burning ManBurning Man is just around the corner people all over are finishing up their fire breathing, tree growing, LED encrusted, jet propelled art cars. Yesterday I got to join my friend Annie to check out Form and Reform put the disco box and lights on their giant snail car they call the Golden Mean. It's a beautiful metal sculpture that drives and shoots fire... hee!The Form and Reform people do their work in a giant studio in Oakland CA called Kraftwork. It's an amazing place filled with awesomely old metal working machines and soot covered greasy machining tools. Wrought iron everywhere, art and robots. A pretty cool place to check out if you can.Now for pictures of the snail:(you can also check: Flickr or Form and Reform for updates and more photos)

why don't cars have bigger wheels/tyres?

Yeah, why don't they have bigger wheels? currently car tyres are about 60 -80cms high. so why not have tyres that are say 120cms or more. more road grip. more components could be stored in it -i.e. for electric vehicles-motors or for reverse breaking-etc.

Why hasn't the steam engine been reborn for modern cars?

With present gas/pollution concerns and green tech merging with cars left and right... Why hasn't the steam engine been reborn? I mean what takes MORE power, Electricity to move a 1000lb car or heat up a heating element to heat water and make steam? With tanks strong enough to hold Hydrogen for cars why cant the same tech be used for a steam engine? All the fuel you would need would be water (solar panels/batteries to power heating) but just water for fuel. Thoughts?

has anyone tried to create a real car body out of paper mache?

How would the shell hold up to aerodynamic and general usage pressures? What kind of cost figures would there be? Are there any government grants available to address this idea? I figure once painted and sealed there wouldn't be any problems with weather. I can only imagine that the overall result is a lighter car, improving gas mileage. Additionally, any modifications to the shell would be a lot easier.

Has anyone built a four wheel PPV out of two bikes? With a bench seat and two sets of pedals, maybe a basket on back.

I have always wanted to take a couple of bikes and use the wheels from these. Build a tube frame like a Go-cart that sat down between the wheels. Which would give you a good balance. Make a bench seat with two sets of pedals so one person didn't get ALL the excercise. Maybe put a basket on the back so you could bring home the groceries. With gasoline prices going up again, this could come in handy around town. I was wondering if anyone here had made something like it.

When is a car company going to finally re-design the steering wheel in a car? Answered

We've been using the same thing for too long.   You would think that by now we wouldn't have to hold our arms up and grab a big wheel in front of us to steer our cars.   I want to see a manufacturer design a steering system that is up to date with the rest of the car.  I imagine relaxing with my arms on the arms of the chair and the controls for the vehicle right at your palms. I will gladly admit that there are a lot of people out there that could not handle a car that was even a little bit more complex because they can't handle a car now.  You might ask "Why fix what isn't broken?"   Why make cars faster?  Why use GPS if maps work fine?  Because it makes stuff easier.
