So i have this old broken cell phone , i think all of it works but its no longer connectable , the body and the screen . it has flash so i thought to somehow make a little flash that i could just flash around for fun , and maybe some other cool stuff with old phone ? thanks

Hey there! I'm a beginner in solarbots and I just acquired a couple of paper thin solar cells that are paper thin and about 5 by 5 cm. The backside seems to be plain paper or something. I want to be able to use my cell phone like a home phone; you know, like keep one upstairs by the bed and one downstairs when I'm in the kitchen. BioFuel: fuel cells of lesser god?

I was just reading one of the biochemistry articles I have, and noticed that urea, the main componant of urine, has an extra, and not so tightly bound hydrogen atom attached to it.   I am thinking renewable fuel cell fuel here, but other then smell, are there any other draw backs to using this?  I mean, I realize the salt content may or may not be a bit hard on metal parts etc. ..  Feed back welcome !

Hi! I would like to make a hand crank cell phone charger....

Hi everybody, How would I make a hand crank cell phone charger from scratch (meaning, not just taking a hand crank flashlight and rigging it to charge a phone). I would really like to understand the electronics behind it all. I think this would be extremely useful if my phone died and I had no outlet available. Solar Cells that look like Terracotta Tiles?

So I had an idea that you could make solar cells that looked like Terracotta roofing tiles example. I figured if they were durable enough you could cover an entire roof in them. They're definitely no uglier than standard shingles. Also figured since they're curved you might get more performance out of them, but I could be completely wrong and they could be absolutely useless up there.The only solar cell I've ever seen that didn't look like a giant rectangle was this little, thin sheet that was in the back of a Wired magazine. It could eliminate the eyesore issue that you might run into with the neighbors. I guess the second problem that you'd run into would be how costly this would be. Since you would have to buy them, install them, then wire them through the attic.And for the record, I know absolutely nothing about solar panels, I was just brainstorming ideas....Ideas? Suggestions? Possible? Impossible?

Wiring Multiple Turbines and PVs

Just a little worried... how do ya'll go about wiring multiple power sources together? I have been long under the assumption that your solar array will only put out power of the weakest panel. If I come across 3 different 12v panels, that have differing amperages, and have a wind turbine on a 12v car alternator, that ranges in power output, how can I wire these to make these most effective? Is there a charge controller out there that can manage multiple power sources? Pardon me if this is stupid. I just cant seem to get off the ground with these simple questions. i guess the most effective q to ask is: What do you do to wire multiple power devices of different outputs into a single battery bank/ grid tie system? What are some good techniques to use when building solar panels?

I have been messing around with solar cells for the past few weeks and made a couple small panels and even one to put on my Losi Speed T (which is really cool, I got the idea from this Instructable - https://www.instructables.com/id/Building_a_Solar_Powered_RC_car/). Specific things to touch base on would be tabbing cells together, and what is the difference between tab and bus wire as well? What voltage specifically should I be shooting for to charge a 12v battery? Anything else that seems important to building a full sized panel is accepted.

Can I use liquid silicone to secure solar cells to a sheet of plexiglass?

Ok so i have the bright idea of sandwiching my solar cells in between 2 sheets of some sort of acrylic material, coating everything with silicone to secure and seal it. anyone have any experience with this? will the silicone block any light? i'm also welcome to ANY and all suggestions regarding DIY solar power!!!!!

Can I connect different voltage solar cells in series?

I have read that connecting different voltage solar cells in parallel could be an issue, but what if I want to connect them in series?I have a larger panel of 21-24V, 15W and a controller with 2 solar panel inputs. I do not have enough space to put up another large panel, so I was thinking about putting a 13,5V and 4x2V cells in series.Is this doable and a good idea? Any down sides to connecting them like this?Thanks for your feedback & ideas in advance!Balazs

how many watts for two freezers will i need to make solar panel?

Im trying to power two 4 amp 115 v 60 hz freezers for an icecream truck by using a solar panel but am having trouble figuring out how many solar cells i am going to need or watts i will need so i can figure out how many cells. i dont know if the voltage is right on the cells when they produce the right watts. any one know how i can figure this out?

Why do I need a switch for a solar battery/usb charger?

 I just browsed online and skimmed through other peoples' projects and failed to notice everyone using a switch. I then thought about it and my 4 solar cells where scavenged from lawn lights that used a light sensitive switch (can't think of the word at the moment). However I had already put my idea to work (without a switch) and I drained the batteries to around 1v a cell by charging my phone over night, and then I happily placed my charger out in the sun without anything hooked up via usb and when watching voltage it was going up at an ok rate. Well hours later I go back to check on it and the voltage dropped back down, now my cells are under 1v a cell. The solar panel is hooked up positive to the battery pack positive, there is a diode between, then after that connection a usb female connector is put in after that, and they are all grounded to the same line. I am confused as to where the batteries could have drained to, and why everything can't be in parallel, although I admit I am pretty newbish, but the logic still doesn't make sense to me. Is it possible to make a solar powered diffuser jewelry that emits steam with miniLED light

I have come across instructables that I wanted to combine: the homemade solar cell using household materials which can be found here, the LED jewelry that can also be found here, and lastly, doing the diffuser procedure which is actually just adding the essential oil on the boiling water. it's like making a ministeam boiler but worn as accessory. I need help with this? Thanks! I think it would involve calculating volts converting the equivalent solar cell measurements to the most smaller measurements as possible. And also how long would the solar cell can be able to sustain and how many volts do I need to reach boiling point? Thanks! I will be updating as soon as I can gather and connect these things. Accdg. Homemade Cryolipolysis revisited - is cool plate and vaccum technology instead of ice packs more reliable?

Http://home.howstuffworks.com/refrigerator6.htm Using the Peltier effect via an aluminum plate, would it be possible to create a homemade cryolipolysis machine? The method cryolipolysis uses to kill fat cells is this: The vacuum pulls the adipose tissue away from the body's core along with the surrounding skin folds to prevent the tissue from being warmed by body temperature. The temperature of the fat cells drops to between -1 degree Celsius and -10 degrees Celsius, triggering pre-programmed cell death. After one hour of application all of the susceptible cells in the area have been triggered and will die off between two weeks and 3 months later. I don't want to use something as inaccurate as ice packs, I would like to buy an aluminum plate, attach wiring to one side to utilize the Peltier effect, apply a light vacuum to keep contact, and insert some kind of temperature control per Peltier junction to keep the temperature in the optimum zone. As far as the back of the connections that gets hot, cooling that with circulated anti-freeze or water should be sufficient, but I'm not sure of the best configuration on the plate/vacuum setup. The way the current Zeltiq technology pulls the skin so far away from the body leads me to believe it's not great for any area that doesn't have a lot of excess skin to pull on and I would like to create a shallower cavity that can fit in harder to reach places like the side of the chest under the arm.

Looking for a LED curcuit that will tell me when my AA batteries are charged using solar cells?

All the DIY solar chargers seem to use a feel test or a multi meter to test if batteries are charged. Is there a curcuit utilizing an LED like those on manufactured chargers, that will let me know when my batteries are charged, and possibly put them in float mode or turn the unit off?

Math help needed for converting volts/watts in solar

Here's what I know: Watts (P) = Amps (I) x Volts (E). What I don't know is if I have a solar panel that is rated at 12v, 0.125 mW I can do the above equation to get that my amps are 0.01. Does that sound right? My real Q, is what is the best power battery to store this energy? Should I only use 8 "D" cells? Could I use a 12 v motorcycle battery? If I use Ni-Cd batteries, is the fact that the batteries are rated at 2500 ma make any difference? Is there a website where I can get a good feel for what batteries are good for what type of activity, solar cells, etc? thanx, sam

Solar Windmills

Of the various renewable energy sources out there, solar and wind are among the most popular. Already windmills are springing up in various parts of the country. This got me thinking, what if you used some of that space on the windmill to harvest some energy. For example, what if you attached solar cells to the windmill rotors of tower to harvest extra power. What do you guys think?

Solar powered 3D lantern converting existing LED fairy lights?

Hi, I am trying to make a 3d lantern for my art project at college. I want to solar power it using Led fairy lights and a solar power rechargeable cell, I need to pull it all apart and just use the Led's of one colour, and put it all back together. The solar power cell is PCB wired to have 6 different functions. If I gut it and then rewire, how will I know which points to solder to just function as an on and off setting? I notice that the existing fairy lights have up to 4 wires running from them skipping to different colours in the circuit along the 10m length. Help. I have to have this project in in 1 weeks time! yikes, and I just found this site. P.S. I am a girl, so keep the answers low level tech!! :)?

Is this what i think it is?

I was taking apart a heavy duty panosonic battery. it didn't say if it was dry cell or not. when i opend it up. and it only had this black powder. it was kind of lumpy. i think its magnesium dioxide. there was also i rod. i took it out and washed it. it is black. i think its a carbon rod since the inside of the battery wasnt wet. it looks like it has little pores on the surface. SO my question is..... is the rod carbon?????????

Lump on the back of my neck? Cancer?

Hey! SO, about a year ago I noticed this lump on the upper-back of my neck. Now, i realize that it has grown...a LOT. Of course, the first thing that came to mind...cancer? So I decided to do some research. I have many many symptoms of squamous cell carcinomas. I have acid reflux, difficulty swallowing, cotton mouth, and those are huge roles in it. Granted, those could just be from a bad line of throat problems, they are still symptoms. It doesn't help that I also have a lot of cancer in my family.... What should I do? What do you think it is? I just need help.

Are your eyes better than mine?

I've been watching and re-watching this video of a kite flying (I can't make Vimeo embed). It's based on the tetrahedral kite, a tried and tested design.  In my experience, kites like this have amazing stability and huge amounts of lift.  This thing should have needed a serious effort to restrain. But it only gets a few feet off the ground, and then only just. The huge banner will have something to do with it, but not a lot. I've squinted at the video of it in flight, and I may be imagining it, but are a lot of the triangular cells the wrong way round, contributing no lift at all, just a lot of drag? Can you have a look, and see if you can work it out?

glass desk piece led mod help

I found a small eagle scout glass desk piece with a black base. I'm gonna buy one and put small LED lights and a battery in the base.  I need a little help with what to do with the circuit. I have some 18650, 18650 holders, copper wire, and some down time. Should I go straight for 3.6/3.7v 18650, or should I use standard 1.5v cells? I want to do purple (my school color). Would it look better to use UV instead of regular purple? Where should I buy a bunch of little led? Online or in store? If I want to sand a pattern on the sides of the glass cube, what's the best way to go about doing that?

Best LED color to mimic incandescent lighting

Dan, Since you seem to be the wizard with LED's around here I figured I would pose this question to you. So I am creating some paper lamps and I'm looking to power them with ultra bright low power LED's, My goal is to make them green laps with the option to use a battery pack with a solar cell. So with that in mind what do you think would be the best selection of LED's for me, I was looking at the Luxeon Star LED's, but was wondering what color I should go with if I want that incandescent look, I was also thinking of creating a single rgb rig to control the color of the lighting for each lamp, your input will help me decide. My girlfriend's father caught us making out in her backyard at 1:00 am. He was pissed. What should I do?

My girlfriend and I have a very happy relationship. We couldn't see each other during the day, but decided we really wanted to hook up that night. Her parents go to sleep at 10:30, and she decided to sneak out and I'd meet her in the backyard, since her house is in walking distance.I told my parents I was going for a walk around the block. I had intended to leave and be home on time, but soon found ourselves making out under bright moonlight and we just couldn't bring ourselves to end it.Soon I start getting phone calls from my parents. Need help with electrical math and set up for Solar Power Battery Charger

Hey I am thinking of making a mini solar panel battery pack/charger I need help figuring out how to set it all up! This is what I have: -Mini Solar Panel, believe it is 10v  -9.7v 700mAh Ni-Cd battery pack -Female USB slot How to set it up? -I want to have the solar panel charge the battery -Insert a LED indicator for batter, Charging/Charged -I want the USB female to be outputting battery power (for any USB device i.e. cell phone, ipod, etc.) -I am guessing I will need/want some sort of regulator between the panel and battery and one between the battery and the USB output? Any help on set up and pieces needed would be much appreciated!  Thanks

Any guidance to Filming and taking photos in the dark? Answered

Hey everyone ! I have been using my galaxy S3 for my Instructables photos and I keep running into a problem. When I am able to pour some good light on it, I can take some really nice photo's. but as soon as a try to take a picture of any of my Led projects (in the dark) the quality goes out the window! (I assume because it can't focus in the dark?) I included two of the good photos as a comparison the the Disco ball. **I still need to be able to take shots in the dark, to highlight the Led's / project lighting** Any thoughts on how I could Improve both photos and vid? Anybody working on cryolipolysis? Answered

I am looking at using a pair of Peltier panels to make a "spot reducer" using cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis is what the Zeltiq machine uses to freeze fat cells such that they dissolve. On a bodybuilding forum they were talking about using cool-paks, those gel-filled plastic blocks that you put in the freezer.  My idea is to take a hand clamp and mount the Peltiers to it. I may need cooling on the hot sides, for that I will probably use liquid cooling blocks from computer CPU coolers. Then, you just clamp those babies on your love handles and crank up the juice. "Animal studies show a fat-reducing effect starting at around minus 1C, with the plate in place from five to 20 minutes." Since Peltiers get about 65 degrees C in differential, and room temp is about 26 degrees (warm room!) it will be a piece of cake for the junction to chill off those love handles. Would not be hard to put a temp controller on it to protect from frostbite or from burning up the junctions. Before you scoff, a Zeltiq treatment runs $700!

Photocells, transistors, capacitors, and IC regulators

I have some questions regarding transistors and capacitors. First off, photocells/transistors. Transistors basically amplify an electronic signal, cool. But can someone explain what's going on between the photocell, transistor, and resistors in this instructable? https://www.instructables.com/id/ECEKKC1KLOEP2872KE/Apparently the PC is high resistance when dark. So is most of the current dissipated in the 100K Ohm resistor in the dark, but a good amount still goes through the 470 Ohm resistor, letting the LED light work? If someone could do the math for I and V across the resistors and PC when light/dark and explain how the transistor comes into play that would be awesome and greatly appreciated.As for capacitors/IC regulators. I know capacitors basically store charge. How does the capacitor work with the regulator in this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/S4IX41WFAQDX2ZH/ ?Does the regulator basically feed the capacitor a certain steady voltage, and the LEDs just draw different voltages as they flash or something like that? Why is a capacitor needed, and could a resistor or something be used instead?Thanks so much for any help :D

Back-up power

Hey there folks! Looking for some advise again. NH just went through the worst power outage in years (maybe history). 6 days without power has me thinking again. I have means of heat (wood stove) and means of cooking (propane) and lighting (candles and my LED projects), but the well pump is a problem. The need of water to flush the toilets came from the stream nearby, all well and good as it was, washing our bodies from buckets has to go. I have learned that my 220vac well pump actually draws it's power from 2 110 vac circuits. If I have this right (which is my first question, is this even possible) I only need a 110vac converter to run this off my batteries. Now, if I'm correct here (second question) a 4amp 220vac pump is 880 watts, then the draw from the 12vdc battery should be 74amps (give a few for losses maybe 80 amps). I only have 2 160AH deep cell batteries running currently. Am I looking at a reality of 2 hrs (half the draw) or 4 hrs use (full draw)? Or, is it even less.... Yup, that was a third question! I just bought a 2500 (5000 max) watt inverter intended for the shop and thought I would use this as my back-up for the winter. Am i even close here?

It is the latest research vehicle from Lotus Engineering, the consultancy division of Group Lotus plc.Emerging technologies will allow alcohol fuels such as methanol, already a proven internal combustion fuel, to be made synthetically from CO2 extracted from the atmosphere. A fuel derived renewably from atmospheric CO2 would be a key piece of the jigsaw allowing society to transfer to sustainable, renewable, carbon-neutral internal combustion.Lotus Engineering is researching the use of sustainable synthetic alcohols as future fuels for introduction within 15 - 20 years.The Exige 270E Tri-fuel is part of Lotus' research into the complex combustion and calibration processes for powering vehicles on mixtures of alcohol fuels and gasoline, which will be important for a successful transition from today's fuels. Its flex-fuel technology gives a practical route to the introduction of sustainable synthetic fuels. Using an alcohol sensor in the fuel system and the advanced Lotus engine management system, the Exige 270E Tri-fuel runs on any mixture of gasoline, bioethanol and methanol. This is all happening at the Eden Project in Cornwall, one of the UK's flagship environmental projects, with some of the world's largest biodomes built into an old claypit.All the major manufacturers will be flaunting their newest, greenest models including Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Volkswagen, SEAT, Honda, Axon, Lotus, Saab and Morgan. Vectrix's electric motorcycle will also be on show, and the hydrogen-powered Morgan LIFE car will make its first public appearance (in the UK).There will also be exhibitors demonstrating how to maintain and even insure your car in a greener way. One stand will feature a driving simulator that they claim can teach you to drive in such a way that your carbon emissions are cut by 15%, there will be a pedal-car race track for the kids, and a Grow Your Own car trail around the rainforest.We visited last Summer, and can recommend it to anybody. Thoughts on modifying a mower to a dethatcher?

Briefly, my lawn is a mess and I cannot afford either an electric rake or dethatcher. I have tried using a spring-tined rake to dethatch the lawn but it is too labour-intensive - and I have around 250m2 to cover - not for the faint-hearted! However, I do have a petrol rotary lawn mower and a spare blade. I have thought of combining the spring-tined rake to the blade to dethatch that way. I don't mind the thatch not being collected - as I expect it will leave the mess on the floor - I can simply dethatch at a higher blade height and then cut/pick up the mess on a lower blade setting. I don't have a welding machine, nor access to one. So I wondered if the good people here might lend me their brain cells to consider (a) what I might use as a rake on the blade and (b) how to secure it on to the blade. I have seen one of those rakes which can be spread at will and I thought to size it and secure it with a metal band and rivets - and then rivet the whole thing to the blade. What do you think? I had also thought that I could fix the rake on the opposite side of the blade. The blade is not reversable/obversable - there is a one-way key that oreints the blade to one position only. Please do not trouble yourselves with warnings about safety etc as I think I am aware enough to consider this for myself - unless it is to say "don't do it". I also know about having to balance the blade weight. As ever, thanks for reading me and thanks for your time to reply.

The Ultimate Man Laptop Case (While going green!)

Hey everyone, I recently just had the idea of making the ultimate man laptop case, and once i get some $$$, it will be put into affect. Its body will be made out of a harbor frieght tools case (metal), gonna cut out the front and reinforce with wood, then goes on (2) 6v solar cells. Behind on the inside there will be foam surrounding the DC Volt reader, and if i can manage, two cheap portable speakers that i have that run off a USB cable/aux. They can easily be converted though. Im going to cut out a slot for my SSD to be placed as well as some headphones if theres room. On the bottom part, im going to send those wires to the power controller for the /solar/ and the /battery/ which will be a 12v Gel RC Car battery (long ones that are fairly big). After that comes the DC-AC inverter which will be disected to save space and the plugs will be movable. SPDT switch comes next to switch from 12v to the 5v USB hub thats gonna be installed. Foam will encase everything, then im throwing some .25 aluminum sheeting on top for a nice finished look. This whole project should run me about $350 or so. I realize this case might be heavy, but I think once most of the parts have been sheded of there cases then I think it might be a little lighter. Going to overheat and/or short circuit something? I plan on making a channel for each seperate item in the foam, and throwing 2 USB fans on them. Any help would be greatley appricated with this project :)
