I would like to know how to make newspaper coils which can then be crafted into baskets, trivets and the like?

I have seen baskets and trivets, placemats etc made from coiled newspaper. I don't know how they are kept together or how to weave them once they're made

To generate elect. is it better to have the coil spin within the magnetic field or magnets spinning inside the coil

Which is better for making a homemade generator powered by the wind? Tesla model suggests coil spins inside of magnetic field but most electronic sites suggest having the magnets spin inside the coil windings. Are more amps produced by having the magnets spin inside the coil windings instead. Couldn't you just use most any (machine pre-wound) coils from motors rated from 1 - 5 hp. and make your own rotor where the magnets spin INSIDE the existing windings from those motors? Helpful to me since they are already rated with rpm speed. Why would you make your own with so many used motors available?

Does copper wire work well for heating coil? Answered

I want to make a diy hair dryer (https://youtu.be/NyXi30acGO0) however the heat coil is a tricky part. I have seen that video saying you need 32 AWG nichrome wire; and another video similar that uses 25 AWG nichrome wire.  I got an old long ethernet cable, however it uses 25 AWG copper wire.  Does anyone know if copper wire will work well for heat coil?

When I see generator construction they usually suggest 1 stator and 2 rotors.

Most show 1 set of coils with magnets on a disc on each side. How would 1 rotor ( with magnets ) and stators ( with coils on ) either side of it compare? Just to be clear the magnets rotate.

Difference Between Type L vs Type ACR Copper Coil

Hello everyone,    I was hoping someone can share advice, tips etc. I plan on getting 55gal steel drum & turning into wood burning pool heater. My question is about which type copper coil would work best, and still be safe to use. My son has Down syndrome and is very sensitive to cold water. We just spent around $1500 to get pool ready with a installed ramp for his wheelchair. We called few different pool people about a reg heater they want from $2500 to $3700. Mostly cause it would not be easy install lot of things in way, etc etc. oh and then add monthly bill. I don't mind the pool temp but my son does and he truly doesn't ask for anything. And if I could safely get pool warm enough for him then I want to at least try. so we really don't have the extra cash to go "normal" pool heater way but I've watched allot of vids on YouTube where they took a steel 55 gal drum, turned on its side and put the copper coil mounted inside at the top. These people would be able to increase temp by allot. Its labor involved but I'm home anyhow taking care of my son. I'm looking at using about 100ft. I can get 1/2 100ft of Type L $163.00 and Type ACR for $119.00. Anyhow Type ACR is much much cheaper then Type L.  Is there a real big difference? Big enough to spend the extra cash and use Type L, instead. Or Is ACR still safe to use with the pool? I'm not sure which Type L or ACR but I've read it say it's cleaned inside the pipe. Axial Flux Wind Turbine

24 pole, 3 phase alternator. 18 coils of #20 wire 80 turns each, 6 coils in each phase connected in series, then wired 3 phases in star config. Put out lethal voltages at a very low rpm. Using N45 2" x 1" x 1/2" Neo Mags, two discs of 24 each attracting each other through coils. I need to know what the number of turns would be for #13 wire, same configuration for charging batteries.

Electromagnet Help! How to Make a Small but very Strong Electromagnet???

I need you help smart people of Instructables!I need to make a small Electromagnet, that uses minimum power (by that I mean the battery), but still has to be very powerful. I have a couple of questions that I need you to help me answer:Does the number of coils that is wound to the metal bar effect the strenght of the electromagnet?Does the wire gauge (20,24,28,30,34,36 wire gauge) make a difference is the strenght of the magnet?Does the voltage I supply to the coil effect the Electromagnet?What type of battery is best for an Electromagnet (AA, AAA, C, D), and what voltage (1,5V, 3V, 4,5V, 6V, 9V) ???Here is the thing, I need to make the Electromagnet super strong but taking up the minimum of energy, for example, just 1,5V. The things that are not important to me (doesn't play a factor in my device) is the number of wire winds to the metal rod and the wire gauge! So is it better to just make 1 or more (3,4,5,6...) layers of wire winds???Is it better to use thinner (36 gauge) or thicker wire (24 gauge)???Thank you a lot!Stanislav

selfcontained electric car?

I had a few ideas on how to make more efficient cars. First off why is it we have NO generators being used while stuffs rotating. Take a small generator with a rubber drive point...like there a chain or belt would go... and place that on the tires. This is a friction driven generator which means that it would not work well in the rain. These...if done right... could keep the car running and then keep the battery charged. Using the battery only for stops. I also think we need to figure out a way to put a coil in the drive train somewhere. Making it to where when the car stops the coil is wound tight, when the car takes off again the coil could unwind and help the car take off. this feature added to gasoline engines would help cut the cost of gas greatly, not to mention emissions.

What's the best way to put kinetic energy in batteries? Answered

I had the idea to have the kids at my favorite summer camp group to "pump" their own electricity because one of the more primitive camps in that group already pumps their own water, but doesn't use electricity. What's the best way to put kinetic energy in batteries? When i say best i mean highest mechanical advantage.   The ways i can think of are: -shaking a magnet through a coil of wires -spinning a wheel to shake  "          " -pedaling to spin the wheel to "       '' -using a lawn mower sort of wheel. Also to refresh my memory what are the other ways (with a higher mechanical advantage) to move a magnet with coils to generate electricity?

AC Motor to Wind turbine? Answered

Ok Yes I know that It has to be DC for it to work as a generator. But I found a fan from Dads greenhouse and its rather larged, used for air circulation. Is there any AC to DC fix? Any rewiring or turning the coil around? Any help or suggestions would be of great help.

If I mist my condenser while it help cool my house? Answered

Lets say I put a mister on my condenser outside, and when the air conditioning comes on it sprays water mist on the condenser. The idea would be: as the water evaporates on the coil it will remove more heat from the unit and it wont run so much.

Hi, I am building a wind turbine with 12 , 22mm diameter x 3mm thick magnets on 6inch diameter soft iron disc and 9 coils on a wooden stator? Is the thickness of the soft iron magnet discs critical? Is 3.5 mm too thin or 10mm too thick?

how can I heat my water for the home with flu pipe?

I have about 6 foot of single wall flu pipe from my wood heater to the ceiling where it gets into triple wall.I want to wrap coils of 3/8 or 1/2 copper pipe around single wall to get hot water free. Now how would I connect it to my existing hot water heater? Or I can put a 2nd tank outside insulated horizontal and let the water gravity feed into the bottom of the copper coils...would the heat fron flu pipe cause the water to rise up and out into the outside tank?what about the supply of water to the outside tank? concerned about pressure back to water supply line...could use check valve i guess.This system sounds like it should be simple but just want to construct it right and safely, please help thank you so much

Uses for scrap floppy disk drives.?

I have a stack of old fdds - they have small motors and worm gears to drive the head and some have motors for the disk but the others have the disk motor coils affixed to the circuit board and so it is difficult to salvage that. Is it possible to 'drive' the fdd over the connector? What signals normally traverse the ribbon cable? They all have opto sensors for the disk in or out and an led of course.

How to make water from excessively humid air (using little energy) . Any ideas?

I was thinking of making some sort of machine that uses cooling coils to condense water from the air, seeing as to how humid it has been lately, but I want to do it using less energy than a dehumidifier that's on all the time and have it be more rugged so I can put it outside and maybe use it to water the garden. Any ideas?

Magnets, Magnetism, Field lines ???? An expert is needed for green wind power.

This is best placed in the green group as it is for the production of green electricity, but I think that it would not be out of place in the science section also. I have an idea, quite probably not an original one but an idea all the same. It came about as we go camping as a family and have been off the grid a few times. Basically we have had no way of charging our electronic devices for longish periods. Solar power I hear you cry, well that is all well and good if you live in a country that has good sunlight, but here in the UK it can be unpredictable and not produce enough charge to power modern devices. I am mucking about with dynamo’s on the bikes (pedal ones) and wind up devices. Something I am looking into is things like wind power or improved dynamo power. The basic principal behind all of these forms of power production is that of passing a conductor through a magnetic field to produce a potential difference on that conductor. Simples (reference to meerkat advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBu0OtC6m9g). It has been a very long time since I have done anything like this (way back in school all those years ago) so please stick with me on this one. If I remember right the principal theory is that 1. The higher number of conductors (or loops in the coil) that passes through the field lines causes the voltage to be higher. 2. The stronger the magnetic flux the higher the current production within the conductors. This is a bit basic to some of you I am sure but I still need to get it out to confirm my thoughts. If this is wrong please correct me, as the title says, an expert is needed lol The bar magnet field lines project from the N end and loop back to the S end in this fashion Image 1 Putting two bar magnets together with N and S facing gives a field pattern like this Image 2 Now this is where I need the most help with. Toroidal magnets produce a different field pattern, and as far as I can make out from the internet it looks like this Image 3 & 4 What I want to know is what happens when you put two toroidal magnets on top of each other, what happens to the field lines then. I have thought that there are a few possibilities on this, the first is that the circular lines will extend to encompass both magnets creating like an hour glass formation in the cross section. The second is that field lines will combine/intermingle between the magnets and create a figure 8 pattern. In either of the two possibilities the field strength will be increased to what could be considered a focal point between the two magnets. So with the technical thoughts out of the way and progressing on the assumption that I am correct so far my thought of a high powered dynamo is this. A central shaft that is spun by wind or other means, attached to this shaft are disks like platters on a hard drive, attached to those platters are the toroidal magnets. The magnets are aligned and spaced to give maximum condensing of the field lines between the upper and lower platter. In the centre of the two (or more) platters is a fixed platter, not attached to the shaft and is stationary. On this stationary platter are the coils, fixed into position. Image 5 The coils are shaped and could be something like the voice coils out of a hard drive, which would be good as they would determine the size of the platters, being key stone shaped they will fit together to make a ring of coils. Image 6 The whole idea is based upon the maximising and focusing of the field lines from the magnets to a point producing the maximum amount of energy as the coils pass through the lines. I also think that due to the shaft being turned having little resistance or weight that even small amounts of wind energy would be able to turn it to produce the desired outcome. Now this is where I ask you all to comment and take my thoughts to bits where I have assumed things that are wrong. I have no problems being told where I am wrong as long as it is not in a nasty way. Hi to all, new here but I thought Id ask if this would work? I have a dead AC unit that I want to turn into a heater?

If I take the outside cooling coil fron the AC,. bring it inside and rapp it around the top of my fireplace/ wood stove . replace the freeon with glycol or anti-frezze. Would I not be able to take the exccess heat from the wood stove and move it to the $$$forced air electric furnace  for distobution trough the house? What do you guys think? Will this work? Can I combine my oil-fired forced air furnace & oil-fired domestic hot water heater? And then tie in solar heated water?

Currently, we have an oil-fired forced air furnace and an oil-fired domestic hot water heater.  I would like to combine the domestic hot water heater and the furnace somehow so we can heat them both by solar heated water from a panel on the roof, and use oil as a back up fuel.

How do I stop condensation from appearing on a cheap styrofoam cooler?

I'm building my own dehumidifier (future instructable if I can solve this problem) and I realize that buying a good cooler is probably most sensible but I am on a budget and the copper coiling drained my funds (Only 15, no job, and my parents don't want to spend a lot on something they don't think will ever really work, hopefully I can prove them wrong). Anyways, the crappy cooler I have will have to do for the time being. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How to change frequency on RC toy car?

Hi all. My friend and I bought 2 rc toys (1:18 scaled Ferrari F1) just for fun, but they work on same frequency (40.685 MHz) so we can't drive at same time. So i need some suggestions on how to change the frequency on one of them. The transmitter have quartz crystal, but receiver have only coil. I already tried solution "Modding Fisher-Price 72825 Formel Junior Fernlenkflitzer" found on this site, but it didn't work. I ordered quartz crystals from China working on (40.885, 40.985 and 40.285 MHz) and when i changed them in transmitter (one by one) the rc toy still reacted on commands from transmitter. Is there any other way to change frequency? Thanks in advanced.

Virtual potter's wheel controls 3d printer

This pottery wheel gives visitors a chance to ‘turn’ their own forms. At regular intervals, a selection of these designs is printed in clay and exhibited in the space. In L’Artisan Electronique, pottery, one of the oldest artisanal techniques for making utilitarian objects, is combined with new digital techniques. The virtual pottery wheel was realised by means of a 3D-scanner and digital design software. However, the installation still clearly refers to the artisanal process of working in clay. The printing process imitates the traditional technique used by ceramicists, in which the form is built up by stacking coils of clay. It looks fun, and even potentially genuinely artistic, but I would like to see a much higher resolution on the scan, to give a less "digital" look to the final object. Acrylic Heating Element - Questions for an electrician and acrylic expert

I'm trying to build a heating element suspended 1" from an aluminum surface, and 2" below what will be a piece of acrylic (hopefully up to 1/2" thick) suspended by aluminum covered 2x4's. I want to have a rheostat (I think that's what they're called) for variable control of the heating element. The width of the element is undetermined, although 1/2" is probably close and this may be of little relevance. The aluminum case itself is 21"x6" and 3" deep So far, I've harvested a coil of Nickel Chromium from a cheap space heater but in trying to create a suspended piece, I've done little but destroy my NiChrom. It was cool, sparks and all, but I'd like to get it right this time. I do not wish to use a torch or heat gun as the pieces are to be wide and the heat must be even over the width to create an aesthetic bend. I will post some photos of the pieces tomorrow. Feel free to throw your hat in on any questions you want to answer. Electric Questions: How much NiChrom. do I need to heat 1/2" acrylic to around 400 degrees (F) for malleabiity? What is the best way to mount or suspend the nichrom.? What is the appropriate method to attach NiChrome to the wiring? (My home made coil using 1/16" copper wiring as a cast was sound in theory, but practice yielded sagging of the strip when active, and eventually sparky explosions at the mounts, after which time this question came to mind.) What kind of Rheostat do I need? What kinds are there? What's the difference? Can I get away with using a 120v/600w Dimmer switch instead (please say 'yes')? Acrylic Questions: What is the ideal heat for bending thicker acrylics? Would a fan below the heating element help disperse the heat evenly over the acrylic, or mess up the dispersion? Can a heating element such as this create sufficient heat to 'weld' 2 pieces together? Is this even possible? Thanks. I'm sure I'll have more questions before you can answer those. Peace - Ian.Wms

Can I mount a fridge from the ceiling? Answered

My parents are moving into a home about a fourth of the size they live in now, since the kids are at college. The kitchen is a sad affair and needs to be torn apart. Even with a fair amount of work, the kitchen will be under 120 square feet. A standard fridge cuts the usable space down drastically and stick out into walking ad working areas.  Under cabinet fridges are being considered, but the below counter cabinet space is limited enough as it it, at best around, 200" linear of 32" deep counter and 90" of 24" deep counter.  The idea hit me when I was searching for fridges that fit under counters when I saw commercial display fridges, and mistook them for ceiling units.  So, is there any way to hang a small fridge from the ceiling? What kind of joists/beams would be needed to keep it from crashing down? Or is this a crazy pipe dream?? Are they just too heavy with all the copper coils and insulation?

Closed system-conductive heating of pool with solar

Hi clever folks, We've been reading the Instructables for making solar hot water systems to heat a swimming pool (4000 litres) in our very shaded backyard (in Australia). We like the idea of using a coil of black poly pipe or garden hose laid out in the sun to heat up and then pumping this through the pool during the day, but the thought of bacteria building up in the pipe has struck fear in us! Sooooo....we may need another plan. I've read way too much on Legionalla and now think it would be safer to have a closed system. What we had in mind is a network of thin poly pipe either in 2D or 3D that would float (or be weighted slightly to sit in a good portion of the water "column"in the pool) and connect this to a long length of black polypipe that would receive solar heating. Obviously this would be a heating system that takes place when no one is using the pool (i.e. when the kids are at school). We'd keep a pool blanket on to insulate it too. When someone wants to use the pool, which would typically be in the evening for us, we'd remove this so-called radiator. Hopefully it would not be too heavy as the thin poly pipe network will be filled with water. Hmmm...so tempting to try it this weekend. We just would love to hear from folks that have knowledge to share on these topics. Thank you, Elise

(optional) Power collection of radiant energy.I like to see more suggestion on ways we can address each issues.But to kick start the issue, can you see if my idea is feasible.essentially for my prototype not-yet throwie, I used a circuit from http://unconventional-airsoft.com/2003/11/16/momentary-fan-switch/#more-21to create a throwie that on sensing motion, doesn't flicker but turns on for a while.By ensuring that i use few and simple componants, i hope to keep cost per throwing down.Unfortunately my problem is that using a resistor to keep the capacitor from draining too fast from the base, actually decreases the voltage drop to an unacceptable level at the led.On my end it is unsolvable for the moment. Maybe you can work out how to make a cheap throwie, that can still do these functions or more.Any ideas how to solve this?Other Ideas for throwies1.Open and attach a switch to a barometer, to have a air presser passive trigger.2. A leave shaped pad with two conductors that do not touch, to act as rain sensors. (Resistance increase when leaf dries)3. Is sensitive to infrared radiation from side, so that the throwie is trigger-able by other activated throwies. (As well infrared devices)4. Has a short loop of coil to recharged capacitors, by outside induction.5. If activated rarely, uses a tiny single solar cell to charge capacitor.6. Has a hook to be easily collected for recycling. (Using a simple loop of wire on a pole [Like a dog catcher pole] )7. A single thermistors in series with led.8. A tricolour LED, and a Two light resistor. One LDR acts to sense if it is day an night, if night a low power light is activated. Only when an object strays near, and reflect light into another LDR, does the throwie get triggered at all.9. A throwie triggered by vibration.10. A throwie that responds to radio waves.
