Energy return on investment for various different energy sources

We're used to thinking about the cost per unit of energy (e.g. $/gallon of gasoline) with the implicit assumption that cost is a rough indicator of what is required to obtain that energy. The Oil Drum has a nice piece on Energy Return on Investment (EROI) and the implications of using low EROI energy sources. To dive right in, it's instructive to think about the EROI of domestic oil production as a function of time:100:1 in 193030:1 in 197011-18:1 in 2000EROI on the Web part 2 of 5, (Provisional Results Summary, Imported Oil, Natural Gas)Energy return on investment, sometimes called EROI and sometimes called EROEI, is thought by many, including myself, to be a critical issue for determining the past, present and future status of human society. It is usually considered in terms of energy return on energy investment, but it can also be considered in terms of energy return on monetary investment. While much of human progress has been attributed, rightfully, to technology, much of that technology has been a means of using more energy for human ends. This is true for fire, knife blades and spear points (energy concentrating devices), the development of agriculture and the increase in its productivity and, essentially all aspects of the industrial revolution.EROI is simply the energy delivered by an energy-obtaining activity compared to the energy required to get it. If the numerator and denominator are expressed in the same units (barrels per barrel, MegaJoules per MegaJoule) the result is a dimensionless ratio, i.e. 100:1 or 10:1). Obviously a higher ratio implies a more desirable fuel than a lower one, other things being equal (which is rarely the case). The concept is extremely simple in theory but often very difficult in execution, mostly because society generally maintains its records in monetary rather than energy terms. Another problem is that the U.S. Government has not supported such studies in a consistent fashion and it is my perception that the quality of some energy records as are kept by e.g. the U.S. Departments of Energy and of Commerce appear to be deteriorating in recent years. Thus deriving the energy cost of getting energy (or most other things) is generally somewhat, and oftentimes exceedingly, difficult. A second problem is that the usual measure of the quantity of a fuel, its heat value, often does not give a full assessment of that fuel's ability to do economic or other work. Most simply electricity and thermal heat from e.g. coal or oil have a great difference in their ability to do work, such as we are willing to trade three or four heat units of coal or oil in a thermal plant for one thermal unit of higher quality electricity. Thus if the input and output fuels are of different quality then it is often thought desirable to weight in some way the inputs and the outputs. A third problem is that it is important to consider boundaries: how large should we draw the boundaries of the energy analysis for the inputs? We will consider these issues in far more detail in later publications but there are many reasons why it is important to make summaries of EROI available at this time even though many uncertainties exist in the numbers that we present here, and indeed with any numbers that might be possible to generate.via jforbess

Home made energy saver

First of all sorry for my English Its just an idea, like that "Intelligent Power Strip" but on the cheap. Use a relay powered from the PC molex (5v yellow-black), so that when you turn off your computer, it turns off, for example, the sound system, modem... connected to this. I have no experience with relays or high voltage. Anybody interested?

Little Windmill Project

Hey everyone a while ago I was cleaning out my closet and found a little micano car, it had a motor on it I was wondering is it possible to use that to generate a little bit of wind energy, if so can someone who knows alot in this field explain how to I intend to have it as a show thing and is it possible to have different colored LED's and if it is windy it will light the all 3 and if its not it will light like 1 or 2 sort of like a wind gage. How do I figure out the cost differential between turning on an inefficient furnace and using oil-filled space heaters? Answered

The big deal is that this furnace also heats the upstairs unit of a duplex, which i also own and rent out to my brother in law.  the deal is that he spends maybe 5 nights per week at his girlfriend's house.  so, if i turn on the furnace, all of the heat that goes upstairs will be wasted.  i'm interested in learning how to measure energy usage and learning how to determine the usage difference between running the furnace, which is about 50 years old and runs at about 50% efficiency and three pretty standard 7-fin oil-filled space heaters.  the flat in which i live is about 800 sq.ft. and the upstairs space is about 600 sq.ft.  the windows are old, but are covered with plastic shrink film for better insulation.

Help me make my apartment self-sufficient and green

Hello,I'm interested in making my apartment greener and more self sufficient than it already is. I want to do this for many reasons, but mostly to see how far I can take this. I'm sure a lot of this will depend on what I can put up with, but i'm looking for some ideas of things to implement. I'll follow Instructables if they exist about it and if they don't, I'll create some to document this.There are some restrictions: I am a renter and I don't own the place. I can make some changes, but I can't cut the walls out or replace appliances. I also can't put anything on the roof or outside of my apartment. I'm also very serious about conserving floorspace in my apartment and not accumulation a lot of junk. I need a bit of space to do my projects and have some sanity in this place (I live in NYC). Blade Tip Power System for wind energy...

I'm looking at adding a not too obtrusive wind generator to a house I just bought. One of the best I have come across is the honeywell BTPS (Blade Tip Power System) - it isn't as sleek looking as a lot of the turbines I am looking at, but it seems like a good concept to me. can't believe that this company is the first to come up with the concept; has anyone here seen any other similar systems, designed to run in the lower speeds/altitudes common in a smaller residential setup, but generating decent power?

I was cleaning my room and found a load of blank CD's. It made me think of all the AOL discs that my house used to get. So I got to thinking - There's a lot of power wasted on these things, right? So, my job for you, Instructables users, is to help me engineer a way to use these CD's to generate solar, wind, tidal, geothermal energy, whatever. Anything renewable. Any ideas?

NGOs I can approach for sponsorship, regarding my solar project?

As I mentioned in the post for the Sunflower, I'm going to b spending the next year or two traveling around teaching people and communities how to generate and integrate solar energy into their local needs, pretty much for free. I've got a bit of money saved to pay for this if necessary, but was ideally hoping to get some kind of grant or sponsorship just to cover my cost of living, which would probabaly come to about £5000 / US$8000 over two years. I have a very low cost of living. Does anyone know of any NGOs / charities / etc I could approach for this? I'm not really needing or offering anything other than the cash to cover my expenses. I can name drop and put a logo on my website and all that, they wouldn't need to really do much of anything other than sling me the cash, safe in the knowledge that they were instrumental in bringing free solar energy to anyone who wants it. Parallelized Wind Power

This started as a blog post on Make was suggested to head over to instructables and get some stuff going here and it seemed a good idea. Also, in the meantime I found (of course) a bunch of cool wind projects here (about 20). I really like the vertical Savonius turbines. I wonder if those could be stacked with a similar effect?I've been wanting to do a wind power project for a while, and it seems like a good one to work on with others. Here's a brainstorm to kick things off. Please add to it or suggest alternatives problems etc.- total parts cost < $200- leverage off the shelf parts as much as possible. - little or no machining.- over 100 watts, (ideally 300-500) (this could be totally unrealistic with a $200 price, not sure yet)- usable in small yards, urban roof topsThe guys who made the original did some research for a grant and the paper is available here: Hopefully this is enough to kick off some discussion and gather up interested parties. I think the first step will be to tack down goals and solidify a general approach. Ideally in the end, we can come up with a good parts list from a minimal number of sources, and an instruction set that's relatively easy. A group might also leverage some purchase power by getting some of these parts in bulk (ie. a whole bunch of airplane props). Tim

How do I convert wind power or wind energy into heat?

I have access to a huge piece of windy  but south facing land,  solar gain will not be sufficient for heating green houses, barns, ect..., it is very cold and at high altitude (about 6500 feet).  Strong wind blows all the time.   How do i turn wind into heat and bank that heat as inexpensively and efficiently as possible.   space needed is no issue  the property is a half mile wide.

I have quit energy drinks, cold turkey. Now I sleep a lot more....

My goal was to save money, and lose weight. It's working on both fronts, but now, other aspects of my life are being effected. I find myself constantly tired, focus is slipping easily, and I'm much more irritable than before, which is quite a feat I was hoping it was just a chemical dependency, but I'm almost 2 weeks without now. Safe to say, I'm viewing this as an addiction. I get in light exercise all through the day, I eat healthy and light (and often), but still feel fatigued... Any non caffeinated suggestions on how to boost energy?

Green Crude?

"Sapphire Energy has built a revolutionary platform that uses photosynthetic microorganisms to produce a renewable, high-value replacement for fossil fuel petroleum. This domestic crude oil requires only sunlight, CO2 and non-potable water - and can be produced at massive scale on non-arable land."They call it Green Crude, an algae produced product that could one day replace gasoline. It's not biofuel, or ethanol, and it doesn't require any plants or farmland. The only things consumed are waste water and CO2. They say it could also be made into jet fuel. It seems too good to be true! I can't find anything about the cost, efficiency or speculated time line, but they do have some big investors and are planning on increasing production soon.The CompanyWhat do you guys think?

Boiling a fluid to make a inverse water wheel?

Ok, how about this; Submerge a waterwheel type structure with cups facing downwards on one side. Under the cups you have some kind of heating element. The fluid is methanol or some other low boiling fluid. A very small amount of heat from the element will produce bubbles, which rise and are caught in the cups, the wheel turns and can generate electricity or whatever. I'm using this principle in another application, but thought it could be quite an efficient means of generating electricity from heat. If the meths is sitting at forty something degrees and boils around 50, it shouldn't take hardly any energy to tip it over. And since you're effectively generating force from gravity (the weight of the fluid on the other side of the wheel) you're kind of getting ten times your force back. ie producing one litre of bubbles will give you 9.8 Newtons of force (for water, 8ish for meths). So (excuse my dodgy maths) 125 litres of bubbles in an hour would give you 1 kiloWatt hour? One cola bottle per minute, doesn't sound very much and that much energy could easily be produced through concentrated solar. Slight risk of explosion... How efficient do you think it would be, overall?

Having problems on building A bike generator

Can a vacuum cleaner motor generate electricity? Answered

I have a vacuum cleaner motor that runs off straight AC from the wall. I think it's like 120 V AC right?.. anyways it's got a huge amount of toque and i'd like to attach it to a stationary bicycle and pedal it to generate electricity. I know all the instructables for this my only quam is the type of motor. I'm not buying one. This is what I have and furthermore I don't even know if it's like universal i guess they call them..I do know that it is a brushed engine (as in it's not brushless) by the way if you haven't caught it yet my electrical jargin is very weak. Finally finished my solar collector prototype.

This has been an ongoing saga for the last six months or so, but with a lot of help from many of you here the Sunflower prototype is finished. And it works! It still needs perfecting, but the principle is sound.This unit cost me less than $20, is almost entirely recycled and salvaged materials, was ridiculously easy to make (tho since I've thought of a way to make it much simpler) and seems to work fairly well. With a larger collector and light pipe in place this unit alone could collect up to a kilowatt of power, maybe more. Now I need to start working on the Mk II perfected design, and some applications for electricity generation and water purification.This will be an ongoing open source project. Once I've got a design which is nice I'll get a website up and be traveling round working with local community groups, inventors and NGOs.If you have any desire whatsoever to take a crack at making this yourself please please do so. The video is a little light on the finer details, so if there are any questions just ask.And thanks again for all those who helped out.

How would 'Rich' people live in The Green City?

I've been asked, "How would Rich people live in my Green City?". Since The Green City is a forum for pure Freedom in every sense of the word (in a good way). Rich people could simply pay for what they want, or need in the Green City. But, it's also a place of serenity. Peace, not full of frustration or anger or hate. It's a good, safe, serene place to live. When I first began discussing The Green Cities possibilities, I started from the ground up. People that already have a lot of money, could simply build what they want in The Green City, but I'm sure as time went on, they would see the 'Good' of what the City is trying to accomplish and they would do whatever they could to help it. If you are Rich you could help shield the Green City from adversity by the power of your money, thus preserving the serenity of the City and the serenity of your home. Not to mention if you have family or friends in the City you would also be helping them out. This is NOT a city where a person can go and become a 'Bum' and live off of others. Everyone MUST contribute something or it is ALL for nothing. Freedom is NOT synonymous with lazy. But, good works can be done in a variety of ways. What's the best way to put kinetic energy in batteries? Answered

I had the idea to have the kids at my favorite summer camp group to "pump" their own electricity because one of the more primitive camps in that group already pumps their own water, but doesn't use electricity. What's the best way to put kinetic energy in batteries? When i say best i mean highest mechanical advantage.   The ways i can think of are: -shaking a magnet through a coil of wires -spinning a wheel to shake  "          " -pedaling to spin the wheel to "       '' -using a lawn mower sort of wheel. Also to refresh my memory what are the other ways (with a higher mechanical advantage) to move a magnet with coils to generate electricity?

What is the fastest most energy efficient way to evaporate seawater on a small scale and collect the salt that reminds?

I tried standard sun evaporation in trays (1 gallon) and it takes far too long (not to mention all the debris that collects in the water during the evaporation process). Heating it over the stove uses too much energy. I am thinking a solar fan / heat combination. Your thoughts? (Note: The goal is to collect the sea salt.)

Solar Windmills

Of the various renewable energy sources out there, solar and wind are among the most popular. Already windmills are springing up in various parts of the country. This got me thinking, what if you used some of that space on the windmill to harvest some energy. For example, what if you attached solar cells to the windmill rotors of tower to harvest extra power. What do you guys think?

Power the American nation with waste food!

A new study shows that the energy used to produce the food wasted by Americans is greater than the energy stored in the oil and gas reserves around US shores. The situation is probably worse than the study suggests, since the only data available on wasted food was from 1995, when 27% of all food was wasted.  Since then, food prices have fallen, and waste has probably increased. Michael Webber and Amanda Cuellar at the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Texas at Austin calculate that this is the equivalent of about 2150 trillion kilojoules lost each year. That's more than could be gained from many popular strategies to improve energy efficiency. It is also more than projections for how much energy the US could produce by making ethanol biofuel from grains. Obviously, Americans (and every other similarly-wasteful society - we're just as guilty in the UK) should be doing their level best to reduce their wasted food, but it also strikes me; there is gold in them thar bins. Rather than persuade hundreds of millions of lazy "Westerners" to change their ways, why not exploit them?  Why not make money off them (or at least, save your own energy costs)? We already have a bus driving around for free, and a car running on garbage.  Can you come up with a house-hold scale scheme? Could you cut your energy bills to zero, just by collecting other people's garbage for them? Could you set yourself up as a supplier of motor fuels (gasoline or diesel replacements?  methane?) Electromagnet Help! How to Make a Small but very Strong Electromagnet???

I need you help smart people of Instructables!I need to make a small Electromagnet, that uses minimum power (by that I mean the battery), but still has to be very powerful. I have a couple of questions that I need you to help me answer:Does the number of coils that is wound to the metal bar effect the strenght of the electromagnet?Does the wire gauge (20,24,28,30,34,36 wire gauge) make a difference is the strenght of the magnet?Does the voltage I supply to the coil effect the Electromagnet?What type of battery is best for an Electromagnet (AA, AAA, C, D), and what voltage (1,5V, 3V, 4,5V, 6V, 9V) ???Here is the thing, I need to make the Electromagnet super strong but taking up the minimum of energy, for example, just 1,5V. The things that are not important to me (doesn't play a factor in my device) is the number of wire winds to the metal rod and the wire gauge! So is it better to just make 1 or more (3,4,5,6...) layers of wire winds???Is it better to use thinner (36 gauge) or thicker wire (24 gauge)???Thank you a lot!Stanislav

INSULATION.. Any way to make ATTIC and WALL INSULATION with recycle Items ???

Anyone knows any way of making cheap or free attic and wall insulation from recycle items? I know of a company that makes it out of recycle shreaded jeans. But then with what will I shread them and what will I wear after shreading them? It will cost me Over $600.00 for a 30x60 ft attic and thats the cheapest being on sale now at Lowes and Home Depot installing it myself. The spray on foam insulation cost an arm and a leg.. Then again I will need them for making my other projects.. haha. I'm sure someone out there knows a way of making it or may have an idea of makin it with recycle material.. thanks.. This will be a a cool experiment or may I say a warm one.. =- }
