They use to call them porch people. They were made of woman's stocking. They were stuffed with fiber fill to make the head and would then sew eyes, nose and mouth on them there hands and feet were also made of stockings. Then they would dress them up and they really looked like people. They were very popular in the 80's. In Clinton N.J. And whoever made them, would charge about 250.00. they would call them porch people. Does anyone know how they were made?

I'm looking to make a prop soon that is basically a backpack with a small screen on it. Said screen alters between two states: green with a smiley face, or red with a rather angry looking face. I am looking to make it so I can alter said screen between the two states, for as cheap as possible. My first thought was to have three pieces of plexi: one with the smile, one with the angry face, and one blank, putting the blank one in the middle. Then, light the edges of the other two with the corresponding colors. However, I don't know how well that would work, or if there is a better option. Thanks in advance!

In the movie his mask is basically a black visor and the lower half is all one piece of black matte plastic, but it's formed to the face with lip detail and everything. Is there a relatively easy way I could replicate this effect without getting into the big long process of making a mold of my own face and then forming plastic to it? No rush or anything, just thought it might make a fun project.

Hi All, I'm going on a stag do in August. the theme is freddie mercury (lead singer from Queen). I want to recreate the shot in the Bohemian Rhapsody video where its just the 4 heads all lit from below. I will be Freddie Mercury, I will print off the other faces and stick them to card, I just need a mechanism where by the 3 other faces are suspended around me, preferably on arms of some kind that are retractable and spring into place at the pull of a cord. Not sure how practical this is, just seeing if anyone has any ideas. thanks in advance.

G'day people Time to show me if Instructables lives up to its name I need to come up with a very easy and fast way to build a minituare truss (picture of truss attached). It basically consists of two aluminum face sheets, that sandwich a network of drinking straws. The drinking straws are arranged in such a way that they form little pyramids (take a look at the picture for it to be clearer). My issue is that I'm working with very tight dimensional restrictions. The 2nd picture shows the dimensions of the top and bottom face sheets. The drinking straws are 3mm in diameter. The edges of the "pyramids" must form an angle of 30, 45 or 60 degrees with the horizontal plane. The current method I'm using to make these trusses takes about 5 - 6 hours. I need something that could take less than an hour. Also, the straws are glued to the face sheets with a small glue gun, but this leaves a lot of "glue residue" around the straws. If you have any better ideas.... what say you?!! edit: I forgot to mention that money is not really much of an issue, so if you suggest I need some equipment or something of the sort that would be rather expensive, I will seriosuly consider it!

Here's my problem: I need the "legs" (sides - picture a doghouse with a 90 deg peak and straight up and down sides) to be exactly 27" apart INSIDE measurement. There are some fairly good large printed pictures of say, a large Frangipani or Rose in the stores at a reasonable price. If I could treat them in some way to withstand the weather on a South facing wall (Oz), they would be perfect for a garden art work. What do you think? Can it be done?

I need to make a prop, the base of which is essentially an open upside down box of around 75cm x 75cm x 75cm. i was going to use a large cardboard box but it needs to be able to pack down as flat as possible for transportation and needs to be able to survive potential rain. i'm thinking i could drill a hole in both faces of each end of 12 strips of pvc angle trim (the stuff used around windows and doors), bolt it all together as a frame and attach corrugated plastic panels as the box faces. do you think the resulting box would be rigid enough to survive a few accidental knocks and kicks without collapsing? i'm not intending to add any load to the box other than a few blocks of carved foam for panel decoration.

Hello, Thanks for stopping by. I've looked on the woodworking fora and I cannot see anywhere where they show how to join 3 equally-sized pieces of wood, perpendicular (right-angles) to each other. I have to make a skeletal wood frame, about 1m3 (1m each side). At each corner 3 pieces of wood will meet. I would like to join these in such a way that is easy carpentry-wise and which gives equal strength to each 'arm'. Each piece of wood is 25mm x 25mm x 1000mm long. Ideally I would like to allow for maximum face-to-face grain rather than butt/dowel-joints - otherwise the job would be simple, but too weak for my needs. Normally in woodwork such weak joints would be supported by sheets of wood or shelves to lend strength, but in this case I can only have a skeletal frame and all the strength is in the joints (approx 15 kg). Thanks.

More the actress talks, the more emotional she gets. By the end of her line, the actress will be sitting with her knees pressed into her chest, arms wrapped around her legs (like she is hugging for comfort), and lower part of her face buried in-between her knees, back facing the door, on the ground crying .Monolog show what the actress is experiencing, like getting bullied/ getting bad grades/ sleeping at the her desk/ and feeling alone.)* “I can’t… take this anymore… everyday just gets harder and harder… bad grades … no one to talk to…getting picked on……. Feeling alone… I can hardly sleep anymore, my new bed had become the desk im at, and my pillow is a cold hard text book… I feel like im losing control, my life is just slowly slipping through my fingers… when I attempted to stretch my hands to its full extent, deep into this dark abyss. This is the first place that popped into my mind when I decided I needed a new idea. I am in a Photography class at my high school and I need help getting some ideas thrown at me. And no, this wouldn't be cheating since I'm not taking your ideas directly. I just think better when there are different ideas flying around. Basically the assignment is to shoot a frame within a frame photograph. Meaning the subject in the picture is framed by something. It doesn't have to be a literal frame, like something out of wood or steel. For example, the subject's face can be framed by their arms and hands. A couple things to keep in mind is no animals, no artwork (as in preexisting), and of course nothing that would be distasteful in a school setting.

After some digging I learned enough about touch screens to know why. The buttons are going to be cast in a clear orange resin designed to pick up light from the screen below them. Does anyone know of a clear additive or resin material that can sufficiently conduct electricity over a distance of no more that 5mm? If you have any scraps of clear white or clear orange resin. Try using it as a stylus on a smart phone or tablet. If the screen registers the press, let me know please! Also, first time posting here, so bare with me if I have overlooked any sort of etiquette.

The idea behind the Kyoto Trough is to use a parabolic trough (rotated inwards round its focal line) so that all the light it collects over a certain time (1 2 3 or 4 hours) focuses BELOW the focal line. Then you use other troughs (probably facing at right angles to the first one) to concentrate this light further onto the cooking pot. I have done a rudimentary test in software and the concept does work there. I think it will also work as a panel cooker. It is very important to line up the primary trough with the path of the sun across the sky. It should also work as a panel cooker. Just a much longer panel cooker with the v shaped little wings like in the diagram Or perhaps a panel cooker with just one "tail" going up in the air and insulation on the back half of your cooking pot? (taking away one half of the device) Thanks Brian

Hi! I'm incredibly new here and already in way over my head! Hope this is the best place to ask this. I wanted to create a mirror that is magnetic to hold tweezers, nail clippers, etc. - lots of little metal cosmetic bits that get lost around my home. I can't attach magnets to the items themselves because they are too small - would it be feasible to glue some rare earth magnets behind the mirror? Or will I just get a giant chunk of mirror embedded in my face? :( I'm trying to spruce my home up on the cheap and keep the small space organized. I have a sampler pack of rare earth magnets from lee valley and some framed mirrors already. If this is feasible could anyone tell me how far apart I should be spacing the magnets? I feel like such newb! I guess I am one. But anyway, I humbly beg at your feet! Please help! Thanks folks!
