Floating Desk

I've been thinking about making a desk for my new room. The best place for it would be to put in a a corner. I'm looking at dimensions of 41x21". What i want to do is make it floating so that i wouldn't have leg posts in my way. I've seen elsewhere floating shelves made from interior doors and was thinking about incorporating that into my desk design.  What i want to do is cut an interior door to this 41x21" dimension. Then hang it up just like you would a floating shelf. Because it's in a corner i would have the advantage of being able to cleat not only the back but also one of the sides. Once i had it in place i planned to put a supporting bracket on the floating side for a little extra support.  I just wanted to know what other people thought of this idea. Would it make a sturdy enough desk, or should i use a different material than the door?

Any ideas on how to build a floating vegetable garden for the cottage?

I'd really like to grow veggies at the cottage, but our wee little island is covered with trees and hence, too shady. I don't want to clear any trees so I was thinking a floating vegetable garden would be great! Here are some of my ideas: -some sort of floating dock-like structure holding/attached to garden beds -some kind of earth-box style planters -some sort of string/osmosis type system that could suck water out of the lake to keep the soil moist (okay, I know this is really pushing it. Maybe a pump would be more realistic). -NOT hydroponics: I'd like to grow veggies in regular soil, just out floating on the water instead of on the land! Some inspiration: http://www.homebysunset.com/home_by_sunset/2007/09/gardening-on-to.html Like the pic in the link above, but something a wee bit tidier and smaller? Any ideas how to do this on the cheap? All notions welcome! Sarah

Floating Garbage Island Twice the Size of Texas Aimlessly Spins in Pacific Ocean

The largest dump in the world isn't outside New York or London or Shanghai but in a desolate stretch of the Pacific Ocean nearly a thousand miles from the nearest island. Held together by a slowly rotating system of currents northeast of Hawaii, the Eastern Garbage Patch is more than just a few floating plastic bottles washed out to sea; the Patch is a giant mass of trash-laden water nearly double the size of Texas.Full Article:Plague of Plastic Chokes the Seas in the LA TimesQuick Blurb:Oceans of Garbage on Vestal Design

i'm looking for an idea to make and float ghost props on Halloween.

I've seen a couple instructables on ghosts in here, but not one that fit the bill. This year I tried a helium filled balloon with white material on it. The idea was to use an LED inside the white balloon, drape the material over the balloon and let it float in my front yard. Secure it with fishing string. But the lightest material I found was still too heavy for the balloon. The material wasn't cheesecloth, but as close to it as i could find. Any ideas or recommendations?

Cheap Island Building possibilities

Hello! Ive been doing all kinds of research and planning on making man-made islands for a few years now, and I had a thought on one method inspired by Thinkenstein's Instructable on Trash Rocks. He has been able to make floating rocks using plastic bottles filled with air, nylon fishnet bags, and covering the combination in cement. Tadaa, Floating Rocks. But after seeing his instructable about this, would anyone think it to be possible to make a large floating land mass using plastic bottles of 16oz and above, nylon fishnet bags, and cement? I think it sounds doable, but that's just whats been put on paper.

White mold on algae?

Recently (as in for a few weeks), my bowl of algae has developed white goop floating in it. It looks like flour, and sticks together like flour. I (intelligently, I believe) have not tasted it, but it or something else in the algae smells terrible (well, worse than how terrible algae already smells, lol). I'm worried because Im donating samples of this algae to my middle school to use for experimentation, but a few, um, white things got in the samples. I really want to know what this stuff is. If anyone wants pictures, I'll upload some,. but basically it looks like flour and floats on top of the algae.

Help Needed: How would i make a 3-Section Floating Computer Desk (horizontal-diagonal-vertical)

I recently came upon the idea to build a floating or wall-mounted desk/workstation. I  am a graphic artist and use my computer area for computer research, drawing on my computer, drawing in sketchpads, printing/scanning, etc. its essentially my art-station.... So the idea came to give myself more room to get my work done, while at the same time not "crowding" my room, which isnt huge to begin with, since I don't have access to a separate office space. This idea could potentially give me enough space to draw and use my computer without having to constantly move things around to fit my materials. It would also allow for more leg room, as i could use my computer chair to roll through my entire area with no interference. I have a rough idea of how this might be able to work, but as i have never done any DIY projects, i figured i'd ask the more experienced people on here for their advice or opinions on the concept itself. and maybe if i am lucky i can get some recommendations on materials. i am VERY new to this and am running just on concept and basic logic; So the concept here is to have 3 pieces of wood, two of them will be 4' x 1' 6" ((48in x 18in)) and the center piece would be 4' 6" x 1' 7.5" ((54in x 19.5in)) however i would need to actually measure it out to make sure on that last one as i just did some quick math to scale of my drawings...  i have a diagonal wall in my room that connects to a horizontal and a vertical wall, which i plan to build the floating desk on. i included a diagram of how i plan to cut and connect the pieces (cutting off triangular pieces from each board should allow them to fit like a puzzle, to which i have to then find a way to attach them). Now, my question is, does this plan look doable. i feel it will be alot less expensive then buying a desk and i will have much more room for what i need. what would i need to support the desk? i would like to make this without legs if possible. while making it as sturdy as possible of course.... and i plan to add a sliding keyboard holder....i will not have many heavy things on top of the desk as shown on my diagrams, the heaviest thing would be an iMac which doesnt weigh much. i would also most likely stain the word a mahogany/reddish toned wood color. so i am looking for a sturdy would that can be stained fairly easily.... ((i will also cut a semi-circle hole on one of the boars for wires to go through, although i will have minimal wiring. I was thinking of using those L-shaped bracket things they sell at Home Depot to support the wood to the wall... they come at a maximum size of about 12 inches i believe....  Does anyone foresee any problems i might run into? any suggestions? is there some materials i should purchase. i have access to a power drill, and materials/machines to cut the diagonal/triangular cuts off of the wood. so yea, did i miss anything.. again sorry, this is my first DIY idea ever...!

Recycled Chopstick Canoe

A Japanese man was bothered by the fact that so much wood was being put to waste so that people could use disposable chopsticks. He, of course, did the logical thing; build a canoe out of them. To accomplish this feat, Shuhei Ogawara has spent the last two years collecting said chopsticks from the local cafeteria. His boat is constructed of 7,382 chopsticks glued together and then sealed with a resin coating. It has yet to be tested, but he is pretty confident it will float for the launch ceremony.via pink tentatacle

What's a use for 'continuous' printer paper? The stuff with the tear-off/hole-punched edges...

I've got a carton of the stuff, and it's just sitting there. Plain white, unlined. I've been using single sheets at a time for drawings or notes, and just tossing the fringes out. They end up in random places around the house. Maybe a notebook? Somehow bind the pages together by the holes, then make it tearaway. Which still leaves half of the tear-stuff floating around. Filler for something? Any ideas?

When Design Goes Too Far

Here's an image that's been making the rounds today. It's a bed that breaks down into four pieces that can then be interlocked with the floating bookshelves to form some sort of padded wall/bookshelf. It's just a design concept and not meant to be produced (I hope), but even so it's quite a case of a design looking for a problem. A few shelves on the wall will have a lot more storage for books and you can then store a futon or an inflatable mattress underneath. And do you really want your mattress displayed on the wall?

Uses for Old Basketballs & Soccer balls

I have access to loads of old basketballs and soccer balls that are always floating in the river by my house. (they get washed into the river from people's yards whenever it storms) They're usually fairly worn and dry-rotted from sitting in the sun but most of them still hold air. I was trying to think of some type of outdoors, maybe flowerbed/garden related, craft I could use them for. I'm looking for practical uses or even artistic uses. I've thought about cutting them in half and making hanging planters, but we don't really have any places to put hanging planters in my yard. If you have any ideas or inspiration, please do share. How do you make a proper Trebuchet sling?

My group is doing a Trebuchet for Engineering class and we've built it and it's ready to go. But it's missing the sling. I've tried making a sling but I feel I've been doing it completely wrong. Because the projectile (wooden ball) would either hit flat on the ground or never release. I'm also confused as to how the sling works, I realize one end is tied to the arm and another is free floating and unhooks and releases the projectile, but how exactly should you do this? Is there any good tutorials that don't leave out details, or at least explain it a little better? Any help is greatly appreciated and will prevent us from failing.

Tips on building a model Sumerian boat?

For a school project, I'm building a model of a Sumerian boat, about 3-4 feet long. (some quick background: the Sumerians created one of the earliest civilizations, and one of their inventions was the boat) Google Images can provide some images to base a design off of: http://images.google.com/images?q=sumerian%20boat It doesn't need to actually work or float, nor be very accurate. As long as it's not too fragile and has the general shape of the boat (which apparently resembles a canoe), it's okay. It should also be made from cheap materials so that it won't cost too much to make. Any ideas on how to constuct it? My idea is to make a wire frame, and wrap that with paper or cardboard, but as I have little experience with this, I don't know if it'll work.  Please help!

Ugly Ducklings

We consume millions of plastic bottles a year. In San Francisco there was a mandate to stop using bottled water in government buildings because the tap water here is good and there's no need to transport water thousands of miles just to stay hydrated. So it's nice to see an artistic assault on the plastic invasion."Many cities repopulate their urban rivers with ducks and swans to somehow clean their visible sewage waters. This installation hopes to clean the reality of the ducks which inhabit these sewage waters by adapting rubbish into their formsDuring a whole week plastic bottles will be floated over River Segura. The bottles will be bird shaped, aquatic species, and will form groups and families. All materials used in this installation will be recycled materials and will try not to disturb the inhabitants as much as possible. If the animal cannot adapt to its environment, the environment must adapt to the animal." original post with lots more pics

need help with levers and pulley thingy

Canoe made out of chopsticks

Angry at seeing thousands of chopsticks used once and then tossed, this guy decided to make a full canoe out of them! Nice work.A former city employee in the Fukushima prefecture town of Koriyama has built a 4-meter (13-ft) long canoe from thousands of used disposable chopsticks recovered from the city hall cafeteria. Bothered that perfectly good wood was going to waste after a single use, Shuhei Ogawara — whose job at city hall involved working with the local forestry industry — spent the last two years of his career collecting used chopsticks from the cafeteria. An experienced canoe builder, Ogawara spent over 3 months gluing 7,382 chopsticks together into strips to form the canoe shell, to which he added a polyester resin coat. The canoe weighs about 30 kilograms (66 lbs), which is a bit heavier than an ordinary cedar canoe, but Ogawara is confident it will float. A launching ceremony is planned for May at nearby Lake Inawashiro. Pink Tentaclevia Neatorama

Glass Desk

So I'm in the middle of this rebuild of this stand up desk that I am finally getting around to. Now I tore off the old laminate, it was cracked so on, and so on. Now I was going to just put new laminate on it however, I sanded down the wood directly below and while I was rearranging my shop I  placed some glass I had laying around on top of it. Looking at it I realized I wanted to put glass on it instead of laminate.... (Thought process incase anyone is interested.... No one? Okay moving on.) Two questions.  One What type of glass should I use for the desk. I know tempered glass is safer, however I also know it will break much easier. Plus, the glass wont be floating with nothing below it so its not like if it does break glass will go everywhere if I use normal glass. And I don't want to use plexiglass because I don't want to have to deal with scratches.   Two Can I go to Home Depot and get glass cut to my dimensions needed for the desk?

Closed system-conductive heating of pool with solar

Hi clever folks, We've been reading the Instructables for making solar hot water systems to heat a swimming pool (4000 litres) in our very shaded backyard (in Australia). We like the idea of using a coil of black poly pipe or garden hose laid out in the sun to heat up and then pumping this through the pool during the day, but the thought of bacteria building up in the pipe has struck fear in us! Sooooo....we may need another plan. I've read way too much on Legionalla and now think it would be safer to have a closed system. What we had in mind is a network of thin poly pipe either in 2D or 3D that would float (or be weighted slightly to sit in a good portion of the water "column"in the pool) and connect this to a long length of black polypipe that would receive solar heating. Obviously this would be a heating system that takes place when no one is using the pool (i.e. when the kids are at school). We'd keep a pool blanket on to insulate it too. When someone wants to use the pool, which would typically be in the evening for us, we'd remove this so-called radiator. Hopefully it would not be too heavy as the thin poly pipe network will be filled with water. Hmmm...so tempting to try it this weekend. We just would love to hear from folks that have knowledge to share on these topics. Thank you, Elise

Newbie... How do I create the singing pumpkin as a singing Christmas Ornament for my holiday bash?

Every year I have a huge Christmas party at my place, and every year I do something more over the top. I'm just now getting into lighting and things and have no background experience in any of this. For instance, you say relay switch... I say WHA? I of course can "look it up", and I've been known to dabble in circuitry. However, I wanted this year to try to re-create the singing halloween pumpkins (that I saw in a video), or the singing Haunted mansion ghosts, into singing animated ornaments (the big kind). I know this can be done, its just a matter of understanding the steps involved. For instance, I know I will probably need a projector of sorts and huge ornaments and some sort of animation. I mostly have mac products so if the programs are for windows they won't work for me. Also, the easiest will probably be the best since I'm new. I also checked out the hologram illusion technique and the glass projection as ideas for doing this or possibly showing a floating movie or christmas short. Thanks for any and all highly detailed information. I would love to get into these things as I'm a Christmas nut and well, most of the Christmas stuff out there just sucks for creativity, but Halloween decor is insanely cool.  I want Disney-like animations and projections. Something special that WOWS. Thanks again!

White particles in water?

Ok, this is now driving me crazy. When I pour a glass (empty glass, no ice yet) of water (filtered, old filter) the water is clear. Pour over ice and big puffy white flakes appear. At first, I think that there must be crap in my ice. So I buy a silicone ice cube tray and use filtered water to make ice cubes. Second iteration: filtered water over filtered ice. Results: BIG FLUFFY WHITE FLAKES. So, that didn't work. My next thought was that maybe I messed up with the ice cubes. So, I switched to distilled water for the ice cubes. Third iteration: filtered water over distilled water ice cubes. Results: BIG FLUFFY WHITE FLAKES. Again I found myself with nasty debris floating in my water. What's next? Oh, maybe it's the detergent I used to wash my glasses. So, I wash a glass by hand with Dawn soap. Fourth iteration: filtered water over distilled water ice cubes. Results: you guessed it... BIG FLUFFY ****** WHITE FLAKES. Gotta say, it makes me want to pull out my hair! I just don't get it. So, here's my question: what's causing the white flakes? I read somewhere that cold temperatures can cause certain salts (not table salt) to precipitate out of solution. This can also be the case with Magnesium and Manganese. Does anyone else have a solution? I just want to drink some nice clear water. I thought for sure a Brita filter would do it for me.
