What type of LEDs are used for grow LED lights?

I've been googleing about the advantage of LED grow lights and how it saves energy and how they last longer. After looking to buy them I realized they were very expensive. However, I also found a few do-it-yourself guides which I thought were pretty neat and straight forward. The only thing I didn't see was if the LEDs they used were special or just any red/blue led lights can be used. Hope to get an answer and save a few bucks but most importantly save energy, Thanks in advance !!

Are LEDS used in GROW LED LAMPS any different from regular, colored LEDs?

I've seen grow LED lamps for plants and flowers go for $100 to $200 on ebay and they look like simple red and blue LEDs in a lamp unit. These days anyone can do a lamp with LEDs since we have a wide variety of LEDs, drivers and casings at our disposal and at a very affordable price. Even if you add the cost of research and develpment and a healthy profit to remain in business into the cost of the device, I don't think the ratio cost-price of those lamps is fair. Those grow lamps seem to be a scam to me, unless the LEDs/drivers used on them are really more expensive than the widely available in the market. I am more inclined to think they priced their lamps artificially to cater to its intended market: deep-pocket obsessed gardeners, weed grow-op guys, fancy growers, etc. Why is that these lamps are that costly? What is the magic behind them or do they have "NASA" technology on them or what? Thanks for your input

Indoor Grow Light for plants and hydroponic gardening.  I need both 110Volt and 12 Volt schematics for out off grid home. My LED knowledge is very limited so I need the specs on the LEDS.

Grow a plant in my locker?

Currently, this is an idea, and i am simply expanding on it. I had this great idea, mostly as a joke, why not grow a plant in a spare locker? I am currently a high school student that goes to a small school, and have way too much time on my hands. As i was looking at the empty lockers we have from students who left, or even just spares, an idea hit me. Why not put one of these lockers to good use? Why not put a plant inside of it, that can sustain most if not all of itself? Have a gallon of water in there, along with an arduino and a moisture sensor, that would end up watering the plant. I would also have an artificial light source to provide light, preferably LED. The hardest bit is the power. All of this would run off of either a SLA battery or two, or maybe a drill battery. I could swap the battery once every day, which means it would need to go for 24 hours without stopping. That, and the weekends, which would be three full days. I first thought about mushrooms, or other dark growing plants, but i find that boring, lacking a challenge. besides doing this just for jokes, i have also wanted to try out the idea of growing a plant fully indoors without the use of natural sunlight. I have never done this, so please feel free to bombard me with recommendations. Again, this is only an idea. I can only assume it's possible. Also, recommendations on parts and methods would be sweet. Some type of light that can be powered on 12-24v, and run off of a SLA or maybe even a lawnmower battery for minimum of 3 days. Also, plant. I was thinking a tomato plant? Some species that doesn't grow taller than 2.5ft? Anyway, that's the idea. If you guys could help with ideas, provide recommendations, or point me in the correct direction, that'd be sweet. Last note, i would like to keep this cheap. I am not going for some extreme garden or anything. Just a single plant, in a semi-self sustaining locker.

DIY LED Growlights from LED Xmas bulb strings

I just got an Aerogarden for Xmas and it is a pretty neat little unit, but it has some annoying and expensive problems. The biggest one is that it uses CF bulbs that are on 16 hours a day, and they say that you need to replace the bulbs every 6 months, because the spectrum of the bulbs change as they age, making the plants grow less well. I did some research and found that the Weed industry has created a solution: LED arrays with a combination of red and blue LEDs (the color frequencies plants thrive on). These arrays are very long lived and use less than 1/2 the power of the CF bulbs in the Aerogarden. The problem is that even the cheap ones (200 LEDs) are $50, and you would need 2 for complete coverage in the Aerogarden. Then I had a brainstorm! LED Xmas Lights. They are already wired, ready to mount on a panel, and you can get Red and Blue strings of 100 on ebay for about $10 incl shipping. I don't know if they are the right Red and Blue, but it is an interesting experiment. Even if it does not work, you are set for Xmas lights for next year.

Giant Firebreathing Snail Car

Well, Burning ManBurning Man is just around the corner people all over are finishing up their fire breathing, tree growing, LED encrusted, jet propelled art cars. Yesterday I got to join my friend Annie to check out Form and Reform put the disco box and lights on their giant snail car they call the Golden Mean. It's a beautiful metal sculpture that drives and shoots fire... hee!The Form and Reform people do their work in a giant studio in Oakland CA called Kraftwork. It's an amazing place filled with awesomely old metal working machines and soot covered greasy machining tools. Wrought iron everywhere, art and robots.
