Marble Machines

Here's a movie of a gorgeous, useless marble moving machine. Check out the guy's marble machine website as well; he's got a lot of discussion about raising marbles and making marble movement machines. He has built several others as well but this was my favorite, probably because of the lovely wooden musical noises created by the falling marbles.

Knitting Machines?

I'm trying to knit a sweater-vest that has a two color repeating design. I'd like to use a knitting machine because I am trying to recreate a sweater-vest from a movie, and it looks like using a knitting machine is the best way to go. I know next to nothing about knitting machines, but I've seen them on eBay and Craigslist for pretty cheap (Like, less than $50.) but I have no idea what I need.  What's a good, cheap, knitting machine? Also, what's the deal with punch cards? I don't really know what they're for. Can someone explain this all to me? Thanks so much, I can't wait to see what responses I get. You guys are awesome.

Sewing Machine Retrofit

Just ran across this blog post by someone who has altered his sewing machine for significantly improved performance, and several modes of operation. I particularly love the mode where the needle follows the pedal, up, or down.  You basically make one stitch at at time each time you press the foot pedal.  Want!

Sewing machine advice?

I'm looking for a sewing machine. I'm not advanced or anything, but I'm familiar and comfortable sewing. I have a somewhat limited budget, let's say $200 max, and I don't need anything fancy. Basically, I'm looking for a basic, easy to use, relatively inexpensive sewing machine. I'm planning to make pretty basic clothes, bags, etc. It would be a great help to have some sense of what models would best meet my needs (new or used). Thanks!!

Mechanical washing machine.

I work for a charity with Aboriginal Australians in the remote outback of Australia, a place called Arnhem land, it is worth a google. People need washing machines, they buy them, they break , even with warranty cover, they can not be fixed as no service men will come here to service them, we are too remote.  Houses here have about 20 people living in them, there is no work here and people live on small government payments which are not enough to cover daily expenses. Due to the difficulty in accquiring and maintaining a working washing machine, health issues such as Crusted Scabies have taken hold here, and cause much suffering. We can't erradicate the disease here without getting working washing machines. We need a solution, an easy to use, easy to fix washing machine. No electronics. Cold water only is fine. Possibly even hand operated, or wind operated (or other)  I found one which is a plastic  tub which turns with a handle and stands on two feet.  However the construction too flimsy, the tub not big enough for a bed sheet, it was green though. Didn't use electric power. Anyone have any ideas? Know any other sites I could post on to get ideas? Thanks : )

Suggestions for a great sewing machine??

I'm trying to get back into sewing again and need to get a new machine. I make creatures, stuffies, monsters, and embellish my daughter's clothes. I'd love a machine that can help with needle threading and the horrible bobbin... stuff. I heard about a machine that has some built-in letters - that could be cool. I don't want a really complicated machine though - I had a Husqvarna Rose embroidery machine and the learning curve (for me) was more than I had time for. It was never used. Any advice is appreciated - Thanks!

sewing machine...help, please?

I'm trying to sew 2 layers of spandex over 1/8 inch of foam rubber. I have ball point needles that the sewing store recommended. I have the 90/14 needle in the machine. There is thread above, and in the bobbin. The machine goes through the motions well enough, but wont produce stitches. I also tried running it on a t-shirt, in case the fabric was an issue. Still not working. So, what might I be doing wrong? dk

Anyone have a recipe or hint that will make home made bread taste more home made? It looks good, but the taste just isn't anything special. Could it be the flour I am using? Should I try molasses, or add eggs?

How to Sew?

"Do you have any sewing machines?" I asked the voice on the other end of the phone. "Yes, we do." said the voice. "Great!" and I hung up and hopped on my bike, out the door before they even heard the click. Minutes later, I was home with my new $30 White sewing machine. It had electrical problems, but that's okay 'cause I'm an electrical engineer! So I fixed the wiring and set to work. The trouble is.. I'm not a sewing-engineer. In fact, I've barely ever sewn before. There are all these knobs and buttons. I played around with them to see if I could figure out what they do, but there are still mysteries. Maybe you can help me out. How do I throw it into reverse? As far as I can tell, there are two possible selector knobs for stitches. What's going on there? What should R-C-L-TN do? What am I choosing, when I turn the knob more towards SS or M? Why does the bobbin thread bunch up underneath like Gandalf's beard? The pink button in the middle of the stitch length wheel?? Anything else I should know? Muchos gracias! PS - who wants to be the first to post a "How to Sew" instructable?

GE washer mod. #WJSR4160D0CC I like to soak our cloths so I stop the washer & the timer still runs can hear it clicking?

I have a GE washer model #WJSR4160D0CC.  When I start a load I like to soak our whites for a few hours so I stop the washer after it fills up and spins for a while and let them soak.  After I stop the washer you can still hear the timer running and clicking is my timer going bad?  My husband says it should not make this noise at all once I push in the knob to let it soak.  Once the washer runs through the full cycle it does not make this sound.  Is it going bad?  Any thoughts?  Thank you.

Hey can u help me with a fog machine issue?

I have a fog machine that I purchased for $14 at menards. It worked great! I had it hooked up to my fog chiller last night and it started making a weird noise. It was spitting out fog every few seconds instead of continuously like it was before. I ran the cleaner (80% water and 20% vinegar) through it like the instructions said. I took a closer look at the hose and it was vibrating like crazy and had air in it for the most part instead of the cleaner. Is it worth trying to fix or should I exchange it for a new one? I was running the target brand fog liquid through it. They containe the same liquids in them. The menards one is clear and the target one is purple. Can You help me?

I don't think my sewing machine is threaded right. Which direction is the thread spool supposed to turn?

This definitely isn't my first time sewing. I've threaded my machine many times. This time the bottom thread keeps messing up and I can't figure out why. I've started over and over. I've changed the direction that the thread spool and the bobbin turns and that didn't help. I thought maybe the tension or the stitch length or width had something to do with it. I've used this kind of thread with this kind of needle and this kind of fabric all together before and it worked. I really need help before I have to take my sewing machine to a repair shop so they can tell me how to fix this, because I don't have any family or friends that sew.

Wire bending machine or jig for small scale / jewelry findings

So the DIwire looks exciting, but the more I examples I see, I notice it's a bit "low res". I'm wondering if there's a smaller scale solution either electronic or mechanical for jewellery production purposes. I would like to find a way to produce non-standard, custom jewelry findings. Is there a high quality, customisable jig on the market? I want to avoid the inaccuracy of hand bending findings... Also, has anyone come across a concise book on the topic of well designed, innovative or commercial jewelry findings? All I can seem to find is a bunch of ugly "craft" or DIY style books. I'm more interested in having a large collection of finding examples at hand than a book of just 12 DIY walkthroughs. Thanks!

Has anyone here built their own Hollander Beater?

Hi all of you builders and shakers, I love papermaking and using arts therapy in education. Hollander Beaters are huge, efficient pulp-making machines, but their awesomeness is crippled by their price tag. Plus you can't have them in a townhouse or transport them for educational workshops. I've heard of artists building their own Hollander beaters in miniature, transportable form (ex the Little Critter, Cherub, Oracle) and if they can do it, well, maybe someone on here can do it too! Does anyone know how to get plans for assembling a DIY Hollander beater, or of anyone who has built one for their own studio, or where I might go to get parts for this project? Thanks in advance!
