Why do rc cars have capacitors on the motor? Answered

Being a hacker or at least a take-it-apart-er, I have seen what looks like one or more small capacitors (I think) soldered directly onto the motors of radio or remote control vehicles. Are these capacitors? I understand the reason for capacitors on large AC motors. Do they serve the same purpose on small DC motors?

AC Motor to Wind turbine? Answered

Ok Yes I know that It has to be DC for it to work as a generator. But I found a fan from Dads greenhouse and its rather larged, used for air circulation. Is there any AC to DC fix? Any rewiring or turning the coil around? Any help or suggestions would be of great help.

How to Power a microwave turntable motor

I am trying to find a good slow motor with decent torque and think a motor in my old microwave may work well but I don't really know how to power it aside from connecting the wires to a regular battery. Will for instance, a D size battery power it, or is there some way I can connect the motor to an outlet (would prefer this method, but I don't have access to a lot of parts outside of what is inside the microwave itself)?

How to build an automated motorized curtain puller alarm clock?

I'd like to rig up a system which will automatically pull open the curtains in my bedroom at a preset time in the morning. The curtains open quite nicely by pulling on strings tied to their inside ends, and it'll be easy to run both those strings to a central location where they can be wound around some sort of motorized spool. So, what I need is a simple little motor (needn't be too powerful, I'd think) that can drive such a spool, and then some way to control it based on the time. Something as simple as a light switch timer, though, which merely switches a circuit on or off at a given time, isn't quite enough, because the motor will need to run for, say, 5 seconds to open the curtains and then stop. Ideally, it would be nice if there was a user-friendly interface I could use to set the time of the curtain alarm, and there should also be a way to just press a button to trigger the opening on command. Any thoughts? Thanks very much!

How does one replace cuisinart motor shaft sheath?

I was given a friend's grandmother's  dlc-7 Cuisinart.  The old sheath has the upper half of the side without metal underneath broken off. The plastic is super brittle.  I've gotten a replacement part.  It looks as though the old one should slide off and the new one slide on.  It's not working out that way. We've cleaned off the corrosion on the shaft that's exposed and cleaned up the plastic with paint thinner.  Pulling on the sheath hasn't  worked.  I've considered super gluing the broken piece back on, but would really like to install the new sheath.

Arduino Projects ITT

I've been doing research into some home brewed add-on people have made for Arduino. I was surprised to find that there are a ton of custom shields that people have developed and sell right now (check this out: http://shieldlist.org/).  This gave me some ideas for developing products myself. I'm trying to gauge what people are looking for in new Arduino product. If you could take a really quick survey that I designed to test the market, I'd really appreciate it? Here is a link to it: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PTSDD8Z Please let me know what you guys think would make great products for Arduino! On a related point, I was wondering about the feasibility of a brushless motor shield. I am working on an Arduino based dual rotor mulicopter with some friends (here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC566tCzMbp-S5ThKuPQO_6g. We aren't too far in yet). I think for others that make "Arducopter", it would be nice to do away with external ESCs for controlling brushless motors. I think it would be far more convenient to have a shield that acts as a substitute for ESCs and also act as a power distribution platform for on board components. Is it dangerous to be running that much current on a PCB on top of an Arduino? Would it be wise to connect a 3S LiPo in parallel with the shield ESC and an Arduino, or could that damage my Arduino? Thanks in advice for the help!

Does anyone have a plan for a motor driven aluminum can crusher that can crush multiple cans at once?

I want to put an electric motor on a 4-wheel bike- (beach bar cruiser) i`ve got ideas but could always use more!?

I own a surrey(4-wheel bike) that seats six and i want to put an electric motor on it.I am on a really limited budget so i need to do this as cheap as possible. I need to get enough power behind this thing to run about 2 miles and it doesnt have to go fast either- if i can get it to top out at like 5-10 mph that`d be excellent. I was thinking i might use a washing machine motor(approx. 115 volt AC // 10amp) with 1 or 2 12V deep-cycle batteries and a 12V-120V AC/DC inverter. I`m no electrical engineer so i could you guys`s input/advice/opinion on whether i`m heading in the right direction and if this has any potential at all. I`m staying away from a gas-powered motor because i think the cops in my town will pull me over if they see/hear a gas engine on a 4-wheel bike. The real goal here is to get me & my friends to the bar and back without pedaling our asses off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated-

To generate elect. is it better to have the coil spin within the magnetic field or magnets spinning inside the coil

Which is better for making a homemade generator powered by the wind? Tesla model suggests coil spins inside of magnetic field but most electronic sites suggest having the magnets spin inside the coil windings. Are more amps produced by having the magnets spin inside the coil windings instead. Couldn't you just use most any (machine pre-wound) coils from motors rated from 1 - 5 hp. and make your own rotor where the magnets spin INSIDE the existing windings from those motors? Helpful to me since they are already rated with rpm speed. Why would you make your own with so many used motors available?

I am building a v-axis wind turbine. I need to know what kind of DCmotor to use for a low RPM DCgenerator. Help me?

The winds in my backyard aren't extremely strong, but I want my design to work and provide a good amount of power if possible.  What kind of DC motor do I need?  Is it easy to create a DC generator from scratch for this type of thing?  Would the ideal motor have a low RPM?  (Because I'm pretty sure my turbine will have a low RPM) Low torque?  Obviously I'm just starting to wrap my head around all of these ideas.  How do I know which motor to get based off the information I am given from the site? Right now I am looking around at www.allelectronics.com , if anyone knows of a better site that would also be appreciated as well. Bottom line: I'm looking for as much power as I might be able to get, but I have low winds, and not a whole lot of money.  I was thinking I might be able to setup the axle to a pulley system with some sort of rubber band going from the axle to the motor, would this work? I know it sounds liek I haven't done my homework, but truly I have, I'm just getting drowned in the options and choices and possibilities at the moment. Thanks so much for you help!  I truly do appreciate your time to help me! Best regards, Aaron

Fan made Iron Man suit is pretty freakin' great

Anthony Le is such a fan of Iron Man that he built his own War Machine outfit. Based on concept sketches from before Iron Man 2 hit theaters, Le's suit has a motorized faceplate that flips up and down and a spinning Gatling gun on his shoulder. It's an amazing build and took Le a month to make at a cost of $4,000. Great job! Le, a fitness consultant, studied some concept sketches of the suit posted on the Internet. He used thin, high-impact urethane for the armor, cutting it into plates and joining them with some 1,500 rivets and washers. He sculpted a clay helmet mold and then used a liquid resin mix to create the final product. But that was just cosmetic work. He also added a small servo motor that opens the faceplate, as in the movie, and built a gun out of pipes and a motor. LEDs in the eyes and chest-plate further add to the illusion. You Built What?! A Real Iron Man Suit

Tips for Miniature carousel up and down movement

I am making a miniature carousel for a decoration on my bookshelf. I like to make a kind where the horses go up and down. I got a motorized lazy susan (which already goes around with it´s built in motor) so the basic rotation is there already. What I just need to figure out is how to get the horses go up and down for couple of inches. What electronics should I use for the up and down movement? I´d prefer to use batteries for the source of electricity for these. I was checking solenoid c:s on a electronics website but had hard time finding a slow ones that would work and/or don´t know how to slow them down. Thx!

Where can i find (scavenge) a 555 timer and other commonly used ICs? Answered

I have a special interest in components retrieval from out or no-more-in-use eletronics, and since i live out ou the US that is probably the easiest/cheapest/quickest way to get some parts. A mini-question: what is the main application of the 555? I've seen it mostly controlling dc motors and blinking lights and in some amps. Knowing the use of it is another way to know where to find it. So, just like a stepper motor can be found in most (if not all) printers and scanners, where can we find ICs and other crucial parts for projects?
