Old How-To Books

I've always been a fan of old how to books. They often have tips and techniques you don't find in contemporary books. Sometimes they are just plain strange. Other times they are painfully outdated, like an old Popular Mechanics article I came across that shows you how to improve your toaster by adding asbestos to it. Last weekend I stumbled upon this old doll making book at a thrift store. The entire book shows how to make dolls in a kind of odd folk art style, and would never get printed today. In spite of the fact I don't really have room for more books right now, I couldn't help myself and bought it anyhow.Has anyone else come across any interesting how to books lately, or have favorite classics in their collection?

Old oil heaters? Answered

Just wondering if anybody knows of any links or anything for the cleaning, maintenance, and lighting of the old free standing oil heaters? Not the kind with blowers and ignitors, just the basic ones that people used to use to heat their houses and such. I have one in my garage from an old railway caboose and would like to use it on occasion in the winter, but the only info I can find on the net is for oil burning furnaces... A totally different animal. Thanks in advance!

Old Makita Drill

I have an old cordless Makita drill the water guy left at our house 15 years ago, I found in my shed with the charger :-). The battery is pretty much completely dead, and I don't want to buy a new $40 one or zap it with a welder. How can I turn it into a Corded drill or use a different battery with it? It is the kind that stores the battery in the handle. 9.6V Battery.

One mans garbage...

Really is another mans gold! I'm the type of person who, when seeing something internesting, picks it up. For instance, I have found: @ A working VCR (and I use it) @ A small TV (not broken, just REALLY old) @ Microwave ovens (several, not a single one broken) @ Old computers (the joys of Harddrive magnets) @ A 27 inch Panasonic TV (it's working perfectly, i use it daily) UPDATE 10 July 2010 @ A working DVD player (slot jammed, fixed it) @ A PlayStation 1 (not tested, I'll report back) (tested it with the AV cable I also found, it works!) There's no shame in taking "trash" off the streets! I got some funny looks having a small TV strapped to my bike, I take them as compliments! What I'm trying to say here is basically Save the planet, finders keepers!

Rocking chairs aren't my expertise, and not much stuff about them are on here but i felt it was worth a shot.

How to teach a sxi-year-old boy?

I am now having a part-time job, which is teaching a kid with simple mathe and chinese. And after teaching him for a week, I found that it is really difficult for him to focus on what i am saying. Like when I was drawing apples and telling him how to count numbers, he was completely concerntrated. And once I finished talking, he started to ask questions like why Tom Cat always chases Jerry Mouse.... Also, sometimes he interrupt me and ask why he has something that other girls don't have. Question: How to use old gym floor wood

Does anyone know an effective way of removing the plastic coating on gym floor wood.  I have managed to remove the plastic once, using a belt sander and many, many, unfortunate, coarse sand belts. Also occasionally using a chisel. This did work well, just very time consuming. The result was a very nice, strong wood. I would be very interested in any information on this.

Can I use an old computer as a security monitor? Answered

I am building a security system and I have an old Dell running windows 98 and with an Intel Pentium 3 processor and I was wondering if there was any way to configure it to send emails, text messages, etc. when the security system was tripped? The system will have an output port for each sector that will go high when there is an alarm in that sector. I was wondering if there was any way of writing some king of program to have the security system connected to the computer in such a way that each output on the security system would be connected to an input on the computer and when a specififc sector was tripped, it the computer would register that pin, and send a corresponding message for the sector? ( for example: the living room security output is connected to input one on the computer, the kitchen, input two, etc. when there is an alarm in the living room, input one goes high (or low, that could also be used) and the computer registers that input one has changed and sends a living room alarm message)? Thanks!

It's just a basic solar cooker - cardboard, black paint and aluminium foil - but discussing it in terms of sustainability and carbon credits makes it worth 75,000GBP and potential mass-marketing contracts.(Cynical? Decorating Plastic Crates With Old T-shirts (not a Tutorial)

Instructables editors are really fighting for their step-by-step how to make format, and I can understand them, cause it's after all distinctive feature of a site. But at the same time I'm having a hard times at dealing with my frustration over... I guess, life in general , so after trying to post this thing as an instructable (unsuccessfuly even after adding photoes of my pets as step 1 and 2) I had no choice but to publish it here. So here we go, uncut directors version with cats and dogs. Just want to share the idea, since I'm not going to replicate this old project any soon and thus making a propper instructable. So, plastic crates are nice way to store things, but they look not very interior-friendly for most living... interiors. But you can upgrade their apperance using some old t-shirts for prise of couple of hours of tedios work... I meant, exiting crafting. Well, ok, while I like the result I got, the process itself is not something I want to repeat ocasionaly. But, anyway, I believe, you'll be abe to decide for yourself. The process consists mainly from two operations: 1. Cutting t-shirts into strips: use scissors and cut them as a spiral starting from the bottom. Sleaves will produse shorter pieces, and the even shorter strips from remaining cut-offs can be used for wrapping handles. ...And since Instructables editors don't tolerate 1 step instructables, this is my dog on the photo, from when he was younger. 2. Weaving strips into the crates: most of those plastic crates have grid-like structure filling the main frame. Use openings in the grid to put strips in and out. Take a time to think through of the weaving pattern you want to achieve and the sequense of actions before doing something - it's much easyer than undoing and redoing things. Do not use very long pieces of strips since it's not very convenient weave like this. Tie new sections to the previous ones and hide knots inside the crate (I used knots as a decoration on the white and red one, but I'm not sure if I like it). It may look a bit messy inside. ...and this is my cat, from when she was alive... and quiet possibly, possessed. It takes roughly 2 medium size t-shirts for one crate of this size (the photo). It doesn't matter if the shirt has some printing on it since the edges of the cutten strips tend to curl to the face surface of the fabric leaving the image not visible in the result. I guess this is it, thanks for the attention and have a nice crates.

how to stop a bully (11 - 12 year old? Answered

Hi this is kaden and i have a problem with getting bullied at school below is an email that i sent  to my school counselor This is in place of spending my day talking to you be because i would rather type it than talk or write it so here it goes. last year carter moved to oak lawn from wakanda and he keep saying things to me like kadens a big baby kadens a big baby or kadens stupid and stuff like that. i would try to tell teachers this but they wouldn't listen or if they did listen they did nothing but give me lunch detention and a major. i am not going to lie but obviously i responded to all of this in not the best way i could of but he just kept following me around and making faces calling  me names  and it got on my nerves. but that was last year but this year he has resorted to physical violence such as use my head as a personal whack-a-mo game or my body as target practice with sticks and stones but also mentally such as lying to the teachers or following me around making faces at me and stuff like that. the worst part i can't defend myself against lunchboxes because then i am the one who gets in trouble but if i let him just hit me and hurt me then neither of us gets in trouble which me and my parents think is just wrong. this next section is just other things that bother me this year… Lucas well he has a history of calling me names too like toothpick and weakling and the thing that sticks out about him was at the end of last year we made tape sculptures and he STOLE my scissors he BROKE my scissors and then he turned my scissors and a glass bottle in to a LETHAL WEAPON and chased me with it and the worst part the teachers did NOTHING he could'would've killed me if he wanted to. but then this year i walk in the bathroom at lunch he calls me weird annoying pushes me against the wall all before i even have the chance to walk away. that fixed my problem for the most part then a moth later it all started again and now a week ago i had a boy with down syndrome kiss me but that's was fixed. then that morning lucas came in my homeroom and called me those names and there were two teachers standing there that did nothing then i was having a bad day after that because i had a sub in lang arts (when theirs a sub its chaos) then i found out that carter started having science the period before me so he was always the last one out and he would always call me names or stomp on my foot (I recently found out that in elementary carter was biting my best friend on the leg) then i had lunch whop hew but then there's Jenny (jenny is a lying girl that thinks shes better than everyone else) and so i told her that library was closed for the day (they had a meeting so kids couldn't use the computers) and then she took out an arrow head and had it in the palm of her hand then she took her thumb and pointer finger and squeezed the side of my neck with the arrow head in hand and she left major marks that went away by the time the teacher saw them the next day but since my neck and face were all red (not from blood) and in tears every one kept asking me whats wrong (funny how the people that always ignore you seem all sympathetic for you if your hurt) so i just pointed to my neck and they just said oh wow then two periods later in band another girl did the same thing as jenny minus the arrow head  now that i have gotten that off my chest hears some more info about this situation i have talked to the school counselor whatever he does it only worked on one kid chance (he is to minor for this story) every body else i don't think he does any thing about principle all he does is listen and and nothing else i have talked to my parents and they email the teachers so no outcome any help and please no troll answers thanks, Kaden

How can I make this book cover look old?

I'm making the Book of the Vishanti from Doctor Strange out of an old textbook, but since it was so clean and well-preserved (as well as the wrong color) I decoupaged some crumpled tissue paper to the cover and painted it with some acrylic paint. Now my problem is that the cover looks a little too much like it was painted, and is really just one flat color. Are there any techniques I can use to make it look more worn and ancient?  Note: in person, the cover looks a lot more drab and consistent in its color.
