Can I make a wind powered resistive water heater with an old AC motor?

I've got a bunch of old ac motors and a cold pool. If I made wind generators out of them to power an old water heater, I could heat my pool. I'm making the blades for the wind generator now, but I'm worried something might blow, but I don't see what would.I know the frequency and voltages would be wrong, but does that really matter? As long as I don't over amp it, wouldn't it be fine? I figure some one else must have thought about this, so I'm asking!

I Need information for melting PET plastic at home Answered

I want to melt PET plastic at home. I want to make a clear tube. I know i have to dry the plastic as much as possible to keep it clear. I will dry the plastic by exposing it to a lower temperature than its melting point for few hours. I plan to melt the plastic into a liquid and pour it into a mold. For the mold i will use 2 fire resistant pipes, and pour the plastic in the gap. Are there any hazards to this, like toxic fumes? Can i use 2 fire resistant pipes as a mold? Is there a better way to dry the plastic? If i forgot to ask something important please answer that too. thank you for the answers.

Heating for outside battery storage compartment.

I have an idea for a wind powered outside LED light for the family's cabin. It would be on a pole and illuminate the pathway, just like a street light would do. So I wanted to have a battery in a box with my wind turbine charging the battery through the day and night. The problem is, it gets really cold sometimes like -36F / -38C and that would kill the battery. So, I also wanted to include some really small, simple heater inside the box. I'm having problems finding anything on what would be the best way to go about this. Wikipedia says heaters are made by resisting current. Are there special types of resisters you add to your DC current to create heat? Thoughts, suggestions, feedback are all welcome. Thanks.

What is a good material for engraving? Answered

Hi creative people! I want to engrave a delicate pattern into a flat piece of material. The material needs to be sturdy and it needs to be acetone resistant. I tried using plaster of paris, but it's not sturdy enough. I can either engrave the material by hand, or with a Dremel. After the piece is engraved, I plan on pressing acetone liquefied ABS plastic with a rolling pin into it. That's why it needs to be unaffected by acetone, and also why it needs to withstand some pressure. Once the ABS had time to harden I want to pull it out of the engraved "mold". Thanks for any ideas!

For this particular project of mine, I'm going to cut the top and bottom of the can off, and then slice the can vertically to create one long sheet. I need this sheet to be flat, but the curve is very resistant against my attempts to get rid of it. I've tried putting the sheet under a large dictionary and waiting a day or so, but to no avail. Does anyone know a way to fix this? Even if it isn't perfectly flat, it'd be alright. Thanks!

What materials can I use to decorate a very boring car exterior that won't cut my gas mileage?

I have a honda civic hybrid.  It is so beige that I lose it in the parking lot.  Could I decoupage areas of the exterior (cut out photos, glue them on, and then put on a sealer)?  Use some kind of paint for free-hand decoration (if it isn't absolutely smooth, won't it cause wind resistance)?  Use spray paint (Rustoleum?) and stencils?  Cut out shapes from contact paper?  In the past, I've used magnets (fall off), bumper stickers (get raggy looking fast).

Best adhesive to attach used wine corks to wood and/or plastic? Answered

I'm making a door mat of old natural corks, so the adhesive needs to be heat resistant and waterproof.  The corks will be spaced, to allow dirt & water to pass through; so, the adhesive should be strong enough to withstand the daily treading, without the benefit of the support of other corks packed closely together. My first thought was to hot glue, but that has no flexibility and the corks would probably pop loose very quickly. I've seen wine cork instructables using wood glue, Gorilla (R) glue and rubber cement. I haven't worked with the first two.  Any experience with these materials? Your input is appreciated; thanks, Community!

How do I change my desktop without spending too much money?

I found a nice desk that fits perfectly in the small space I have for it, yet it's big enough for my multiple monitors. The problem is that the veneer (a plasticky thin top) has a horrible color and it's also stained. So I want to change the desktop color (to white) by using some sort of contact or adhesive paper, but I went to Home Depot and Lowes, and they only have that thin kitchen contact paper, which is very prone to scratches. Is there something I can use to put on top of my desktop to change the color, but resistant enough to use it without any protection. I don't want to spend too much money and I don't have the room to actually change the veneer. Any suggestions?

Made By Me *UPDATE*

I'm sure many of you have seen the latest Facebook meme that's going around: Made by Me.It goes like this:Made By MeThe first five people to respond to this post will receive something made by me.This offer does have some restrictions:- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make.- It will be made just for YOU.- It will be done this year (2009).- It will be something made in the real world and not something over the internet.- It might be art. It might be craft. It might be food.In return, all you need to do is post this text into a note of your own and make five things for five other people.etc. etc.Well, a carpenter I know posted this recently, and I just could not resist something hand-made by this guy. He once made some kind of wooden whirly gig from medieval prints he'd seen. I couldn't resist! So I reposted, and got my five (+) responses, and I'm going to keep you all posted on what I'm making for them! I'll instructablize all of the projects, and probably make some sort of "Made by Me" guide. If you're on facebook, I encourage you to join this thread, and pass it along! If you're not, and you're interested, try to start an email thread. Come back to get inspiration for your gifts, and make sure to post your own results!Let me know what you've done!***** UPDATE ***********************************************************I think what I failed to mention here, is that this is a neat idea to share with your friends. I would not want a stranger to respond to my posting, and I wouldn't respond to a stranger's. Mostly because I don't want crap. I want to make cool stuff I know my friends will like and get cool stuff made by my friends. If you try this out and get people you don't know responding to you, I would just ignore them! Or put something in the main text about how this is for people you know ONLY!Good luck!

I need to surreptitiously mount a plaque inside of a bathroom stall...

I have a smallish (5 x 8") plaque (brass plate on wood base) that I want to mount to the door of a standard public restroom stall.   LIMITATIONS:  I can't use screws or glue.  There is a coat-hanger on the inside the door which I was thinking about removing in order to utilize pre-drilled holes, but I can't get the screws loose with a basic philip's head.  I have an impact driver/drill, but I feel like that would draw more attention than I'm comfortable with.   So I'm left with either a ton of double sided tape that will hopefully be strong enough to resist casual attempts at removal, or a rare earth magnet on one side of the stall and chunk of iron or steel on the other.  Of course, there's an issue of cost when it comes to the magnet as well as a concern regarding the visible piece of metal that I'd use to attract the magnet.

Photocells, transistors, capacitors, and IC regulators

I have some questions regarding transistors and capacitors. First off, photocells/transistors. Transistors basically amplify an electronic signal, cool. But can someone explain what's going on between the photocell, transistor, and resistors in this instructable? https://www.instructables.com/id/ECEKKC1KLOEP2872KE/Apparently the PC is high resistance when dark. So is most of the current dissipated in the 100K Ohm resistor in the dark, but a good amount still goes through the 470 Ohm resistor, letting the LED light work? If someone could do the math for I and V across the resistors and PC when light/dark and explain how the transistor comes into play that would be awesome and greatly appreciated. As for capacitors/IC regulators. I know capacitors basically store charge. How does the capacitor work with the regulator in this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/S4IX41WFAQDX2ZH/ ?Does the regulator basically feed the capacitor a certain steady voltage, and the LEDs just draw different voltages as they flash or something like that? Why is a capacitor needed, and could a resistor or something be used instead? Thanks so much for any help :D

Custom Etched Halloween Tombstone

I created this custom etched Halloween tombstone using builder's foam, latex paint and spray paint. The method of creation is to use a water based paint to create a resist that will protect the foam from dissolving when painted with the spray paint. This technique works really well to create the weathered stone look that older limestone monuments take on after a couple hundred years. For this project I was trying to create a broken then repaired tombstone that was partially covered in moss. Project Process - First sketch the design layout using a marker. Then paint the areas that you want to remain un-etched. Next, spray the entire face tombstone with a heavy, even coat of spray paint. It will take a few minutes... but the face will be etched as much as 1/2" deep depending on how heavy a coat of spray paint. After the etching paint has dried, paint the entire tombstone with latex primer and then add any desired painted effects. For this project, I used a grey granite spray paint and then added sand that was painted a moss green color (adhering it with spray adhesive). Total active work time was approximately 2 1/2 hours. A full Instructable of this project to follow soon...

Problem removing a glued on bearing from glass

I am a bit stuck and usually this does not happen too often :(Got a lazy Susan with two glass plates and the bearing sitting in two aluminium disks. The thing still works fine but the plates were never really centered properly.Starts to drive me nuts that it is always "wobbling"...My first attempt was to figure out if the glue might just be hot glue, so I gently heated it all up.Was a not go but didn't expect it to be that simple.Next try was to use some clay around the aluminum disk and then fill the dam with acetone to dissolve the glue.It did not even soften it a bit :(To make it complete I also tried it with Methye Ethyl Ketone as it never failed me but it seems the glue used is chemical resistant. In terms of echanic tried with a thin bladed tool but can't get it into the non existing gap between glass and aluminium. And even braided fishing line seems to fail as after about 20 minutes of trying to get in the glue I got nowhere. My last resort would now be to put it in the oven and slowly heat it up until the glue fails.Problem is that I highly doubt the Lazy Susan is meant to tolerate this and that it will crack. There is also the bearing and possible grease to consider as I have no clue yet whether or not I can take the disks apart to get to the bearing. Is there any good idea or tip that I missed that I can try before risking to heat it up?In case you wonder: The disk is about 5mm out of center...

How do I hook up a USB video cam in my truck? Answered

PC Rife software home-made plasma globe: Anyone do this ?

I have been self-treating various illnesses for a while now using some bio-electrical methods. One of which is the resonance method developed by Dr. Royal Rife in years past - but modernized using the PC as a freq. gen. and an audio amp to process the output. Some info on the various methods and specifications: http://www.introductiontorife.com/poor_mans_rife.html http://www.royalrife.com/lists.html http://www.rife.org/ http://www.electroherbalism.com/Bioelectronics/FrequenciesandAnecdotes/CAFL.htm http://heal-me.com.au/frex.html http://heal-me.com.au/frex-pfa.html ( Related, and also fascinating:   http://www.royalrife.com/electronics.html ) The PC/Rife/amp combo works well, but the better way is supposed to be via a plasma-tube, which is very expen$ive. Another way to do this is by using a plasma globe with an audio input used to modulate the discharges via the frequencies; this is also too expen$ive for me right now. Some users here have come up with ways to make your own plasma globe with a HV supply and a big incandescent light bulb. Great. Now - how does one modulate the discharges in the bulb by overlaying or adding the Rife frequencies ? This question seems hard for most to understand and I was even told to make a 'plasma speaker' when I asked one of the experts-> great idea-> as long as one is a crazed audiophile with $$$ to burn and a high resistance to exposure to pure/fresh ozone. (No thanks for me.) Is there any really smart person here (who understands my question...) with good suggestions for how to do this without 1) spending a bundle 2)massive ozone generation in the room 3)massive injuries and/or fatal results ? Also I have seen where people do the light bulb/plasma globe thing related with experimenting on ballasts from compact flourescents - but again there is a lack of info on how to do this as well as any means to overlay or control it with a desired audio frequency. Thanks !

Throwies reimagined - Really I did tried :) :| :/

Seeing other forms of making interactive throwies, eg using microchips impresses me.However i think it is important that we try parts of the B.E.A.M philosophyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BEAM_roboticsNamely keeping things simple, and avoiding the use of microprocessor. The component of a interactive throwie is that it has1. Power storage2. Trigger3. Circuit4. LED5. (optional) Power collection of radiant energy.I like to see more suggestion on ways we can address each issues. But to kick start the issue, can you see if my idea is feasible.essentially for my prototype not-yet throwie, I used a circuit from http://unconventional-airsoft.com/2003/11/16/momentary-fan-switch/#more-21to create a throwie that on sensing motion, doesn't flicker but turns on for a while.By ensuring that i use few and simple componants, i hope to keep cost per throwing down.Unfortunately my problem is that using a resistor to keep the capacitor from draining too fast from the base, actually decreases the voltage drop to an unacceptable level at the led.On my end it is unsolvable for the moment. Maybe you can work out how to make a cheap throwie, that can still do these functions or more.Any ideas how to solve this?Other Ideas for throwies1.Open and attach a switch to a barometer, to have a air presser passive trigger.2. A leave shaped pad with two conductors that do not touch, to act as rain sensors. (Resistance increase when leaf dries)3. Is sensitive to infrared radiation from side, so that the throwie is trigger-able by other activated throwies. (As well infrared devices)4. Has a short loop of coil to recharged capacitors, by outside induction.5. If activated rarely, uses a tiny single solar cell to charge capacitor.6. Has a hook to be easily collected for recycling. (Using a simple loop of wire on a pole [Like a dog catcher pole] )7. A single thermistors in series with led.8. A tricolour LED, and a Two light resistor. One LDR acts to sense if it is day an night, if night a low power light is activated. Only when an object strays near, and reflect light into another LDR, does the throwie get triggered at all.9. A throwie triggered by vibration.10. A throwie that responds to radio waves.

Magnets, Magnetism, Field lines ???? An expert is needed for green wind power.

This is best placed in the green group as it is for the production of green electricity, but I think that it would not be out of place in the science section also. I have an idea, quite probably not an original one but an idea all the same. It came about as we go camping as a family and have been off the grid a few times. Basically we have had no way of charging our electronic devices for longish periods. Solar power I hear you cry, well that is all well and good if you live in a country that has good sunlight, but here in the UK it can be unpredictable and not produce enough charge to power modern devices. I am mucking about with dynamo’s on the bikes (pedal ones) and wind up devices. Something I am looking into is things like wind power or improved dynamo power. The basic principal behind all of these forms of power production is that of passing a conductor through a magnetic field to produce a potential difference on that conductor. Simples (reference to meerkat advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBu0OtC6m9g). It has been a very long time since I have done anything like this (way back in school all those years ago) so please stick with me on this one. If I remember right the principal theory is that 1. The higher number of conductors (or loops in the coil) that passes through the field lines causes the voltage to be higher. 2. The stronger the magnetic flux the higher the current production within the conductors. This is a bit basic to some of you I am sure but I still need to get it out to confirm my thoughts. If this is wrong please correct me, as the title says, an expert is needed lol The bar magnet field lines project from the N end and loop back to the S end in this fashion Image 1 Putting two bar magnets together with N and S facing gives a field pattern like this Image 2 Now this is where I need the most help with. Toroidal magnets produce a different field pattern, and as far as I can make out from the internet it looks like this Image 3 & 4 What I want to know is what happens when you put two toroidal magnets on top of each other, what happens to the field lines then. I have thought that there are a few possibilities on this, the first is that the circular lines will extend to encompass both magnets creating like an hour glass formation in the cross section. The second is that field lines will combine/intermingle between the magnets and create a figure 8 pattern. In either of the two possibilities the field strength will be increased to what could be considered a focal point between the two magnets. So with the technical thoughts out of the way and progressing on the assumption that I am correct so far my thought of a high powered dynamo is this. A central shaft that is spun by wind or other means, attached to this shaft are disks like platters on a hard drive, attached to those platters are the toroidal magnets. The magnets are aligned and spaced to give maximum condensing of the field lines between the upper and lower platter. In the centre of the two (or more) platters is a fixed platter, not attached to the shaft and is stationary. On this stationary platter are the coils, fixed into position. Image 5 The coils are shaped and could be something like the voice coils out of a hard drive, which would be good as they would determine the size of the platters, being key stone shaped they will fit together to make a ring of coils. Image 6 The whole idea is based upon the maximising and focusing of the field lines from the magnets to a point producing the maximum amount of energy as the coils pass through the lines. I also think that due to the shaft being turned having little resistance or weight that even small amounts of wind energy would be able to turn it to produce the desired outcome. Now this is where I ask you all to comment and take my thoughts to bits where I have assumed things that are wrong. I have no problems being told where I am wrong as long as it is not in a nasty way. Cheers all
