steampunk sealant

Hello, I am steampunking a nerfgun for my nephew and the assumption is that he will play with it. I thought I would use an acrylic clear sealant to protect the paint, but when I sprayed it, the paint krinkled -- once it dried, it became hard again. I have two more components to seal and would like to avoid this. (I sprayed the nerf with flat black Krylon spraypaidn (supposed to bond to plastic) and then dry brushed metallic acrylic paint for effect. One internet person suggested I use mod-lodge -- but the instructions say that after applying it, i should use a clear acrylic topcoat. So my question is--should I be using this extra step--or is there a paintable acrylic sealant i could use? What are best practices used by you folks?

Steampunked Utensils

I am taking a class for 2 weeks up in Maine (Haystack Mountain School, Boris Bally will be teaching) where we will be will be using the eating ends of spoons, forks and knives to create new utensils with new handles. I would love to steam punk some of my "new" utensils. Over the years I have collected a huge amount of weird stuff that might work so if you suggest it I may actually have it. We will be using cold connections and soldering so anything goes. Any ideas are most appreciated.

Steampunk(?) Batman

I first came across Elseworld Batman on Brass Goggles(a steampunk website), described as a steampunk Batman. Although he's actually from WWII and the goggles are arguably the only "steampunk" thing about him, I am still tempted to put him in the category. I have an instructable for the costume and was curious, not just if I should add it to this group, but also if anyone else would dare call this "steampunk".There's also a picture of some other goggles I made, and am thinking about doing an instructable for them as well, let me know what you think. Thanks.

Painting metal; steampunk

Hey guys, I've never really done any crafts so im not sure how to go about doing this so i figured id bring it up here. I know i'm 8 months early but I wanted to get started now, on a project for halloween. I randomly decided a few weeks ago i was visited by never good "good idea fairy" and i listened when i was told to by a unicycle by my awesome mind. Then I started riding it, realizing that i could probably get pretty decent at it pretty quickly. Then someone talked about halloween and I was thinking about what would be off the wall so i immediately though of the unicycle. Here, my mind went to steampunk, then it went to looking like abe lincoln while riding a unicycle. Then I realized that my boring chrome painted unicycle would hardly look Victorian, and that it would need a facelift. LONG STORY SHORT: My issue is that I would like to spray paint it a brassy colour, and not ruin the unicycle. I just got back from the craft store, where they told me that my idea of wrapping saran wrap tightly around it would not work because the paint would just run off. They suggested wrapping canvas around it, but when they showed me the cost of canvas i let out a faint hearted laugh and said what if i were to wrap it in a paper or construction paper type  material and paint that, but they turned that down because of the appearance it would give.  But again, it is halloween and it wont be all that light out so I dont really see a huge requirement for detail. Is there any way you guys could think of that will not ruin the unicycle?

How could I make a standard pair of jeans more steampunk? Answered

I need a way to practically fix up some jeans for everyday wear and tear (and washing) that would be practical to wear, say to work or school, but would not be out of place with a steampunk ensemble. really i just kind of need the jeans to be a bridge between steampunk and modern fashion, so that i won't get funny looks from teachers and co-workers by showing up in full neo-victorian/steampunk garb.

Does anyone have a tutorial on how to make leather boots? Answered

I've seen and saved the tutorial on how to make regular shoes but I need something in the boots category. I'm trying to make a Steampunk-esque pair of boots that have hidden pistons in the heels attached to a small air tank on a belt which would make the wearer rise up about 5 inches when a trigger is pressed. The technical details I can handle but I need to know how to make a pair of leather boots.

Attaching items to mugs?

I would like to make myself a bespoke steampunk-esque mug using metal clockwork gears and cogs.  I've tried to find what I want ready made but nothing is quite right. What would be the best adhesive to use that would withstand regular use with hot drinks (we're talking at least a dozen cups of tea a day, I'm British) and would be dishwasher safe? I also suspect I may need to seal the pieces once stuck on, what is good for that? Thanks.
