could 12 strips of pvc angle trim be used to make a light but fairly rigid box frame?

I need to make a prop, the base of which is essentially an open upside down box of around 75cm x 75cm x 75cm. i was going to use a large cardboard box but it needs to be able to pack down as flat as possible for transportation and needs to be able to survive potential rain. i'm thinking i could drill a hole in both faces of each end of 12 strips of pvc angle trim (the stuff used around windows and doors), bolt it all together as a frame and attach corrugated plastic panels as the box faces. do you think the resulting box would be rigid enough to survive a few accidental knocks and kicks without collapsing? i'm not intending to add any load to the box other than a few blocks of carved foam for panel decoration.

Dollhouse repairs

I bought a dollhouse made 25 years ago and someone put white oak tag like a poster board paper on all the ceilings of the rooms in the dollhouse and I want to take it off. It doesn't peal easily and right now it makes the rooms look tacky. Anyone have a suggest how I can get this paper off?

Making a "Special Walking Staff"

I made a staff out a broomstick although I think the materials are probably pvc and aluminum...again not sure. Anywhoo, the project I want to work (if possible), is making a sword cane...in this case a sword walking staff. The staff is about 52 inches long.  The inside of the staff is hollowed with a space of 0.75 inches in diameter and 50 inches in length. Right now the inside is filled with sand (for the weight). If possible to fashion the rod into a blade of sorts the sand with be dumped (SAM_0120).  I capped the bottom of the staff off with a tin cap screwed into the pole and double wrapped the staff with black electrical tape.  Now what I want to do is try to put a small 15 inch blade inside...again if possible. Considering the staff is already closed off I'll have to cut some of it (below the handle). I found a carbon steel rod that I'm considering using(Screenshot (27)). Could anyone help me out by explaining the best way of going about how to do something like this??? Thank You

Looking for ideas on how to make a boom stick for sound effects (LOUD BOOM!!)

Hey everyone!!  I'm looking to make a loud boom-stick for our local high school football team.  We are the Pirates, and already have a pirate ship in our end-zone, but we are missing a cannon to "fire" after scoring a touchdown.  It has to be pneumatic, because..... well, let's just say explosives or flammables are NOT very welcome on campus!  Anyway, it will not fire a projectile either, but when finished we will mock it up to look like an old pirate cannon.  I would seriously like to make as loud of a BOOM as possible!  Thanks for any help!!

Beginner Jewellery maker. Question about gold/silver plating

Hi there, I'm starting jewellery making as a complete beginner and want to use Metal Clays to do this as it seems one of the easier and cheaper ways to make jewellery at home. I looked into lost wax casting, but there are no studios or workshops near where I live to do this. I really love gold jewellery, and was wondering that if I used bronze, copper, or silver clay, am I able to plate it too? I've seen those electroplating kits online, but I was wondering if it would work after I've finished making my jewellery piece with the clay.  I've also seen videos about 'silver accenting' copper clay... Is this just basically like coloured base metal (costume jewellery), or is it real sterling silver (i.e high end costume jewellery). Any insight anyone can provide is very much appreciated! :) Erika

Wood Chest Renovation

Hi There I have a wooden chest that I was asked to restore. The chest is made of what appears normal pine, but it was painted over with a dark paint. The owner asked me to try and restore it to the original wood. My question is: 1. Obviously I would have to sand it, but what grit of sand paper do I use to get rid of the paint and to get the smooth surface? 2. What would be the best application after sanding, oil or varnish? The client is not a fan of a gloss finish so what would be the best option? Thanks Marcel

What fittings can I connect together (building an air compressor) ?

Hi, I'm building an air compressor out of fridge compressors, propane tanks and NPT fittings from ebay, everything was cool until I received a check valve I ordered before all the other stuff (because it was from another seller so no need for a group order :) for one item). So I ordered a 1/8 female/female check valve (one way valve), and I measured the diameter with calipers, and it's not 1/8" (3.2mm) but a lot more, which makes sense, 3mm would be really tiny so now I don't understand how all of that works here are the fittings that will compose the system (those are 1/2 I guess but I will order 1/4 and 1/8 as well to make the complete circuit (around 20 fittings total): http://www.ebay.com/itm/281299625853 here is the check valve I already ordered (1/8 BSPP): http://www.ebay.com/itm/182025682762 I also noticed the valve is linear while the fittings appear to be the shape of a cone, will it matter ? Thanks in advance for any help ;)

12v solar to heat water

Im looking to install a hot water cylinder with a 12v immersion heater powered by solar panels(to add wind later) to my hot tub. the idea is to either heat the whole thing all the time or to at least reduce my power usage on the heat side of the running cost. has anyone done anything like this and have any advice? the basic install idea i have is, solar panel/s to a controller controller to a battery controller to immersion heater was also thinking of installing a normally open relay onto the stat of the heater so when it is at temp a fan heater would kick in, but that would be a later install if the water heating would work. any info would be great, if i get enough info i will be doing this and making it into an instructable to further help adopt this to work better. thanks....

c. 1978 Spencer's Gifts Water Candle

Back in the late 70's Spencer's Gifts sold something called a "Water Candle". It was actually a wax sculpture made to look like stalagmites with a regular candle on the inside. When lit the flickering candle shone through the translucent wax. The sculpture itself didn't melt and the candle could be replaced. Does anyone know where there is any info (especially pictures) of this type of thing.

A more efficient way to stamp paint

Hi all! I have been working on a crowd source campaign for elaborately designed dice for a while now and have a problem with my home manufacturing process...hopefully, someone can give me some ideas. I need to find a quick and efficient way to apply paint to the raised surfaces of the dice faces. You can see in the rendered pic the 3d printed file that I'll be making the mold from. I made the numbers extend out instead of going in to simplify the painting but need to get down a system of applying the paint. I was thinking some sort of stamping but thought that was only good with ink. Any input is appreciated...

Raspberry Pi 3 Interactive Led Strip Wall

At the moment we're working on an interactive led screen wall for the entrance hall of our new studio. I've setup the following frame (http://i66.tinypic.com/33ll30j.jpg)  with 17meters of WS2812B addressable led strips. We're using the Neopixel library for rasp (https://github.com/jgarff/rpi_ws281x) and it works like a charm with the rasp 3. Anyway they next step is to control these ledstrips so they work as one big display. I had a look on the internet and a lot of people advices to work with the FadeCandy from Adafruits but I want to know if there are other solutions using only Python and write software to control the ledstrips. The purpose is to use the rasp's camera module like this guy did http://andydoro.com/ledmirror/images/stills/ledmirror01.jpg so when someone is entering the room, his reflection appears on the wall... Any information / tips / other solutions about how to achieve what I described above are welcome. Thanks

How do I turn rough sawn walnut into a table top

Hi all, I've recently got a job as a chainsaw operative and at our yard recently there have been some 3'x5'X2" rough sawn lengths of seasoned walnut. I've bought one home to find making it smooth is harder than I first thought... I've got a few odd tools in the shed, like a rotary sander, some chisels and a few planes (but I don't know how to use them.)  is there a fairly quick proper way of doing it or is it just a case of sand the hell out of it? There are a few deep scratches but it's mainly small scratches and general unevenness. I would really appreciate if someone could give a fairly detailed process and description of The tools I'll need. thank you all for your time.

Electroplating Non-Metals

I'm looking for input on the process of electroplating non-metal materials. I have never electroplated before and am open to trying the traditional method or the paint on plate solutions that are available.  I'm just uncertain where/ how to begin and what to buy. The hurdle is that the items I want to plate are not metal to begin with.  One website I read seemed to suggest that painting the object with a paint that contains metal flakes (like Liquid Leaf faux gold leaf, which contains soluble copper) would be enough to get a paintable silver plate to bond. Anyone have experience to weigh in with?  I welcome suggestions for techniques, favorite products, etc.

Sealed gravity liquid dispenser

I am looking to build a sealed gravity dispenser similar to this one.... http://www.dudeiwantthat.com/household/bar/liquor-log-booze-dispenser.asp I'm trying to figure out the best route to take, I have a beer tap I will be using. My problem arises with running plumbing in a solid piece of wood without cutting it in half. I plan to use pvc and but that means I need a 90 degree angle in the block of wood or log. Is it possible? My best idea is to drill my holes and cut a chunk out of the back that can be glued back. My next question is. How to attach a bottle? Obviously I have to have the bottle upright and place the dispenser on the bottle and flip it. But how to get a seal on the bottle that will work with different bourbon or whiskeys. Thanks on advance for any help.

What do you think about this greenhouse design? Creating Multi Source power to store in batteries and convert for home use

I am planning on using multi source electricity producers to store in batteries and convert to 110/220 AC for home use. I am going to set up as many generators as I can, including solar panels, wind generators, water flow generators and heat flow generators. I am building an underground storage room for the batteries. What would be the best batteries to use? What do I need to be able to use my generators to charge the batteries (I am thinking I will need a separate battery charger for each battery, but what do I need between the generators and the chargers?) and then how do I convert the DC to AC and hook it up to the house? As I will be doing this a little at a time, we will be using electricity from the power company at the same time. As we save money on the electric bill with the power we supply, we will expand our own generation of power, until we no longer need to buy electricity. Thank you in advance, Michael C. LaMay

Help make a quacking noise in a wooden toy duck (mechanically, not electronically)

I'm in the process of recreating the LEGO wooden duck toy. I'm only working from a few images I've found online, however; I don't have an actual one to examine. On the originals, the axles operated a couple of mechanisms: the duck head pivots to open and close the beak, and there's a mechanism under the base (I'm assuming) that makes a quacking noise. I've got a pretty good idea how to create a simple cam for the head/beak movement, but I'm not sure how to generate a quacking noise mechanically. My online searches have proved fruitless. Does anyone happen to have one of these vintage LEGO ducks and is willing to snap and share some photos of the mechanisms? Or, does anyone have any good ideas how to make a quacking noise mechanically? My thoughts are a push/pull rod-type crank attached to an axle, but on the other end of the rod . . . not sure.

Giant Hanging Light Bulb Lamp

I'm wanting to create a giant hanging light bulb lamp, similar to the ones I've uploaded, but I'm not really sure how I would go about doing it. I think I would make it out of plastic. So I would need to create a mold and then make two halves on a vacuum form, but I have no experience doing that. I'm not sure how I would make a mold of a giant light bulb, what materials to use and how to make it. I had thought about maybe cutting something out on a lathe but I don't have a lathe and it seems like it would have to be pretty big. I also thought about paper mache but I was afraid it might be too bumpy and light bulbs are smooth. Also once I have created the vacuum form plastic halves how I would attach them together with out having a large seam show.
