How to Make French Toast
Intro: How to Make French Toast
My boyfriend makes fantastic french toast. Super fantastic! I've tried making french toast lots of times, and it never turns out like I want it to, so I made him document french toast with me. :D
So I'll show you how Tyler makes his french toast, but I'll also simplify the ingredients list a bit. He likes getting fancy and using every sugar we have in the house. I basically stood next to him and demanding to know timing and how much of each thing he used all morning. I'm happy he still likes me!
I'll also go over how to make yummy french toast toppings. You can never have too many toppings.
Just be aware this version of french toast is more like a dessert than a breakfast. :D
(We also had a food porn face-off and each plated our french toast the way we wanted and photographed it... mine has maple syrup, strawberries and powdered sugar, and his has a cream cheese sauce and strawberries.)

STEP 1: Ingredients:
- 3 eggs
- 1/8-1/4 cup sugar of choice
- 1/2 cup of milk/soy milk
- six slices of hearty bread (we like sourdough)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- cinnamon to taste - we used about 1/4 tsp
For topping:
- macerated strawberries are super yummy! slice the strawberries before you begin the french toast and sprinkle with a few tablespoons of sugar. mix it all together and then let it sit. :)
- Tyler makes a cream cheese topping too - whisk together a bit of cream cheese, a little sugar, some milk and vanilla, and BAM!
- powdered sugar
- maple syrup
STEP 2: Combine the Milk and Eggs
Beat the eggs and then add the milk and whisk a little more. You'll know that it's good and mixed when it's a nice cream color. :)
STEP 3: Add Sugar and Vanilla
Add whatever sugar you like, some cinnamon and a bit of vanilla. Whisk it together so you don't have any clumps of sugar or cinnamon floating around.
Tyler says "If it smells good, it will be good."
At this point Tyler asked if I was getting photos of him. So here we go. :D

STEP 4: Soak the Slices
Pour the egg/milk/awesome mixture into a shallow, wide pan.
You don't want to soak the bread very long, otherwise your french toast will be soggy. About 30 seconds per side should do it. You just don't want to see any dry spots on the bread.
Place the soaked slices of bread on a plate and let them rest while you warm up a pan on the stove. :)

STEP 5: Cook the Toast!
Heat a nonstick pan (or something nonstick with a little butter in it) over medium heat.
Once the pan is nice and hot, drop in your first slices. Don't overcrowd the pan or they won't cook properly - we're doing two slices at a time. :D
You'll cook them for about two minutes per side, depending on how dark you like them. I like mine to be pretty dark.
Either serve the slices right away or set them on a plate so they can mingle and keep each other warm.

STEP 6: Serve!
While it's amazing on its own, it's even better with toppings!
I like maple syrup on mine and powdered sugar, Tyler loves the cream cheese sauce and claim it's not as good without it. :D
It's also good cold from the fridge later so you can subject yourself yourself to two sugar comas if you like!

do u have to use milk in it
jessyratfink 9 years ago
You don't have to - you can sub in nut or soy milks instead. It might not be as rich though, if you use something really watery or low in fat.

Yup! I've made it using both nut and soy milks - it doesn't come out quite as rich but it's still good. And I think the almond oil will work well to add flavor :D
