Introduction: $30 3D Printed Efficient Led Grow Light

About: Hedonist with embedded brain

This is a small 3d printed led light i made for my vegetables houseplant.
Designed to be as cheap as possible and let you grow your own food, but to give the maximum efficiency and don´t involve any soldering. It's perfect to raise not very light demanding plants or for early stages, i'm sure it also can be used for photography, hydroponics, aquaponics, any kind of indoor setup and anything else you got in mind!

This light consists of 4x bridgelux BXEB L0280 led bars which are driven by a Meanwell driver in parallel with two options:

  • APC 35 - 1050: driving each bar at 1.05A/4 = 262,25 mA.Gives us a total power at 20v of around 1.05*20 = 21W
  • LPC 60 - 1400: driving each bar at 1.4A/4 = 350 mA. Gives us a total power at 20v of around 1.4*20 = 28W

Compared to commercially available solutions, has a lumen output similar to a HLG 65 vegging board, efficiency close to DIY COB leds (Vero, CXB3590, Citizen... ) but with a higher coverage area. Nothing to do with other cheap solutions as 5050 led strips, chinese amazon lights or e27 bulbs.

Max drive current of the boards its 700mA so we are always under half of the current with any of the boards, so heatsink isn't mandatory. At the current used they have a 180 lm/w efficiency, not bad at all for they price.

APC variant has been tested for over two months already and hasn't show any problem, LPC variant has not been tested, because i don't have the driver, but i made the model also because i thought like its so if somebody build it any feedback would be very welcomed! 3d files available at thingiverse and myminifactory

Always wear sunglasses when looking at this leds! never put them in a place where you can have direct vision of them.

This lamp is working for me, but I am not in any way electrician and i can't assure this is complient with all security directives, always double check all connections, think on your own if everything is safe. Design is not fully isolated so use in humid spaces it's not recommended, i am not responsible in any way of material or personal damages caused for misuse, bad mount, or anything else derived from this model.

Supplies

  • 4 × BXEB L0280 - I used 5000k but any white would be ok
  • 30 × M3 25mm aprox screws and nuts - To mount the 3d printed frame, only 24 should be enough, includes spare ones.
  • 2 × M2 / M2.5 25mm screws ands nuts - To attach the led driver
  • 1 × Meanwell APC-35-1050 or LPC-60-1400 LED driver
  • 1 × 220v/110v AC cable with plug - As long as you need
  • 2 × 5way WAGO
  • 2 × cable connector - For AC PLUG cable to driver
  • 2 × 18-24 AWG cable (RED/BLACK)

Step 1: Buy Supplies / 3d Print the Pieces

Links for stl files available at thingiverse or myminifactory

You will need to print:

  • 4x side stl

And depending on your driver choice:

  • 1x apc or lpc stl
  • 2x wago_apc or 1x wago_lpc stl

If you don´t have any 3d printer, try to search any local craiglist or similar, send them stl files link, pieces shouldn't be very expensive as they are fast to print and not very big, but depends on your local prices.

You can find necessary electronic components at arrow.com digikey.com or aliexpress.

Step 2: Mount Driver and Frame

  • First you need to attach your driver to the 3d printed base using the M2/M2.5 screws and nuts, tighten them up.
  • Then you need to attach the four side pieces, let them a bit free.
  • After that mount the four led boards, they only can be positioned in one way. Let them also a bit free
  • Add the wago 3d printed holders and add the connectors
  • Once all in place, tighten all pieces firmly

Step 3: Wire Everithing Up

  • Put one of the OUTPUT cables in each of the wago connectors.
  • Cut and trim a cable from each of the wago connectors for each board, this cable should be AWG 18-24 with add tin in the ends.
  • Connect as in schematic, be carefull and put all cables in correct polarity, cables comming from wago with black polarity driver output should be connected to negative connector on the led PCB, and red to positive connectors.
  • Double check if they are all connected in good position and firmly inserted.
  • Connect AC power cord with connector of your choice, also can be soldered.

Step 4: Plug and Enjoy!

Good luck with your grow :)
I welcome any suggestions or comments! If you make one please share! i am always very happy to see my designs used.
