- Thin Clear Plastic material
(We used plastic cut from clear plastic cups, like these:
- Clear Tape
- Smart Phone with Screen at least 4.5 x 2.5 inches and YouTube Capability
- Laptop with Screen at least 11 x 6.5 inches and YouTube Capability
- Sharpie (any color)
- Printable Diagrams for side size (correctly sized word documents included on here)
Holography reconstructs the light that bounces off an object at every angle. A hologram uses a complicated pattern on a plane so that light passing through it diffracts and interferes to produce a life-like image.
The array of gratings and the directions of the corresponding light beams are fixed. So to create an image, a patterned mask is placed over the fixed array of gratings, so that some escaping light rays are blocked and others are transmitted. This way, the display beams different images in different directions, so that a person’s left and right eyes see slightly different images which is a requirement for the brain to process an image as 3D.

Step 1: Gather Materials
Step 2: Print Diagrams, Cut Them Out, and Trace Them on Your Plastic
Here, we are using a roll of our plastic, which has the same stiffness as a clear plastic cup, such as the ones in the link we gave you in the materials list. The diagrams are included at the top of this step. Use the bigger one for computers and the smaller one for phones.
Step 3: After Tracing 4 of the Shapes on Your Plastic, Cut Them Out
We are essentially making a 4-sided inverse pyramid without the point. To do this, you must trace the diagram four times and cut them all out.
Step 4: Tape Them Together
Using straws, cut to the length of the diagonal side of the shape, tape the pyramid together. The sides of the pyramid should be very close together, with as little space as possible between the sides.
Step 5: Find a Youtube Video. (to Find Examples, Search "3D Hologram Videos")
When you find a video, put it in fullscreen and center your inverse pyramid as close to the center of the screen as possible.
