3D Printed- Theo Jansen Mechanism

This project is an example of what ingenuity and patience can accomplish. Right now, this is the only 3D Printed Theo Jansen Mechanism on Instructables. This was designed on solidworks, made to be about 4' tall but when i printed it in the printer, i scaled it down to .375 scale. As you can see, it is still pretty big for a desktop model. I'll eventually post the .stl files soon, but for now, I'll post a motion study video from solidworks to show how this works if your new to this concept.

    Ah, that works! Didn't know if it was anything purchased specifically for this type of thing. I've had Theo Jansen's design in my head for years and have been dying to play around with a set, but am limited with getting the pieces cut, aside from spending a ton of money having it printed by companies like Ponoko, etc. Is that your 3D printer? Do you plan on making sets to sell?

    Thats interesting:D And nope, our school has recently bought a Dimensions uPrint desktop 3d printer, and since I'm heavily involved in CAD Design i thought making a project like this would be fun to do. I dont plan on selling these since anyone could really design is. so as soon as i get all the steps made im going to include the .stl files involved to make this.The parts that im posting are scaled so that it can be about 4' to 5' tall. so if you wanted to CNC this out rather than print it you could. Originally that was my plan until we got the printer.

And for the joints, currently all but the crank shaft assembly use 3/32" rod i picked up at Dorns ( the crank shaft uses 3/16" rod), and to cap the ends i used hot glue, but hot glue isnt very permanent. So if you have any suggestions as to how to cap the ends im all ears:) I tried solder but it didnt stick, and someone mentions fishing lour crimps?
