Before crucify me saying I screwed up a guitar to make a shelf in my defense I say that this guitar is very old and has been hurt by falls and excesses of a teenager who thought he was rock star! Also, I will use the other parts of the acoustic guitar to make an electric nylon guitar! (Soon I'll post pictures of the project!)

Antes que me crucifiquem dizendo que eu estraguei um violão pra fazer uma prateleira, digo em minha defesa que este violão é muito velho e além de não ser profissional, já foi muito machucado por quedas e excessos de um adolescente metido à roqueiro! Além disso, eu usei as outras partes do violão pra fazer um violão de nylon elétrico! (Em breve postarei fotos do projeto!)

Step 1: Dismantling

I know it hurts to see such a mess, but it's for the greater good!
Be very careful when disassembling because the guitar is very fragile and in this case the glue was old and dry (which facilitated my work!). If you will re-use the parts as I do, take extra care to take off every piece! Use a stiletto or a knife to stick under the arm and under the bridge and go slowly forcing (and be careful to not cut yourself!) After dismantling, I was sanding the entire inner part to prepar for varnish.

Desmontando
Eu sei que dói ver um instrumento assim, mas é para um bem maior! Tenha muito cuidado ao desmontar pois o violão é bem frágil e neste caso a cola estava velha e ressecada (o que facilitou o meu trabalho!). Se você vai reutilizar as peças como eu farei, tome cuidado redobrado ao descolar cada peça! Use um estilete ou um canivete para enfiar debaixo do braço ou debaixo da ponte e vá forçando bem devagar (e cuidado pra não se cortar!) Após desmontar, fui lixar toda a parte interna preparando para o verniz.

Step 2: Creating the Shelves

A friend gave me this piece of acrylic - was a cosmetic display shelf.
The trick to cut acrylic is very simple - this acrylic is thin, so just set another piece on it serving as a ruler and move the blade several times! You can not push too hard or go too light .. go scratching, deepening the cut step by step until about halfway through the piece. After that you can gently break the acrylic towards the cut! If it is a very thick piece, forget the knife and go to the saw, hacksaw or band saw - will be faster and much safer!

Criando as prateleiras
Eu ganhei esta peça de acrílico de um amigo - era de uma prateleira de exposição de cosméticos. A dica para cortar acrílico é muito simples - esse acrílico é fino, portanto basta fixar outra peça sobre ele servindo de régua e passar a lâmina várias vezes! Não pode forçar muito nem ir muito leve.. vá riscando, aprofundando o corte passo a passo até ficar mais ou menos na metade da peça. Depois disso pode gentilmente quebrar o acrílico no sentido do corte! Se for uma peça muito grossa, esqueça a faca e vá pra o serrote, tico-tico ou serra de fita - será mais rápido e bem mais seguro!

Step 3: Testing the Shelves in Place

After making the cuts, you must sand the acrylic edges to remove burrs and leave a smooth edge. This step is very important to try the shelf in place! The guitar has a curved body so it is difficult to cut the piece in the exact measure and you should sanding to get a perfect fit. Also take care to mark exactly how each piece will be fitted to prevent incorrect installation. (ah .. in this step I had still not finished sanding the guitar ...)

Após realizar os cortes, você deve lixar as bordas do acrílico para retirar as rebarbas e deixar a borda suave. Neste passo é muito importante experimentar a prateleira no lugar! O violão tem o corpo curvo portanto é difícil cortar a peça na medida exata e você deverá lixar até conseguir um ajuste perfeito. Também tome o cuidado de marcar exatamente como cada peça será encaixada pra não instalar errado. (ah.. neste passo ainda não havia acabado de lixar o violão...)

Step 4: Finishing Sanding

I decided to apply only a colorless varnish on guitar rather than paint it, so you must take a good sanded to leave a very smooth surface.

And I decided to lower the struttings to leave a cleaner look (recommend not remove them because the guitar depends on them to maintain its cohesion). To lower hte struttings, I used a knife and was chipping away bit by bit and then sanded to be uniform.

This guitar had no bearing ribs did not have to do anything about it. If your guitar has, you can leave them in place as it is with a very cool look.

Terminando de lixar
Decidi aplicar apenas um verniz incolor no violão ao invés de pintá-lo portanto é necessário lixar bem para deixar uma superfície bem lisa. Decidi rebaixar bem as travessas para deixar um visual mais limpo (recomendo não removê-los pois o violão depende deles para manter sua coesão). Para rebaixar, eu utilizei um estilete e fui desbastando aos poucos e depois lixei para ficar uniforme. Este violão não tinha "costelas" (aquelas traves internas que se prendem ao tampo) portando não foi preciso fazer nada a respeito. Se seu violão tiver, pode deixá-las no lugar pois fica com uma aparência muito legal.

Step 5: Sanded and Varnished

Sanded and varnished
After a good sanded, I applied a few coats of clear lacquer spray. The time between coats was about 10 minutes. Really enhanced the color of the wood and got a great look! In my case, I had installed a preamp on the guitar which made this ugly side window. The solution was to install an acrylic to serve as a cover and give a better look! To apply the varnish I covered the window with tape.

Depois de lixar bem, apliquei algumas demãos de verniz incolor em spray. O tempo entre as demãos foi de 10 minutos. Realmente realçou a cor da madeira e ficou com um excelente aspecto! No meu caso, eu havia instalado um preamplificador no violão o que deixou esta feia janela lateral. A solução foi instalar uma peça de acrílico no local para servir de tampa e dar uma aparência melhor! Para aplicar o verniz eu cobri a peça com fita adesiva.

Step 6: Creating the Support Wall

My initial idea was to carve a piece of wood as shown in the picture and make a nice "neck" to hold in the wall. However I do not have an appropriate place to do this service nor the necessary tools.

Therefore I decided to use a steel support that is used to install servers in hacks. After all, the shelf will be located 2 meters above the ground and I believe that no one will notice the type of support was used.

Besides opening two more holes to attach the guitar body, decided to open a V-shaped hole to attach on a hook on the wall. I could have used a cutting disc to do this job, but I preferred to open several holes and rip these holes and then sand. (I used a hand drill to make no noise - another reason to avoid using the grinding).

To hang, I used a hook but it was necessary to modify it leaving it with the shape of an L for ease of installation. My goal was to let the guitar quite close to the wall. To drill the wall has no secret - a drill in Gavel function (I had to make some noise .. hehe). I used a drill number 6 and a screw anchor in equal measure.

Criando o suporte para a parede
Minha ideia inicial seria esculpir uma peça de madeira conforme mostrado na foto e fazer um belo "pescoço" para prender na parede. Entretanto não tenho um local apropriado para fazer este serviço nem as ferramentas necessárias. Portanto decidi utilizar um suporte de aço que é usado para instalar servidores em hacks. Afinal, a prateleira ficará instalada a 2 metros do chão e creio que ninguém irá reparar no tipo de suporte utilizado.

Além de abrir mais dois furos para prender no corpo do violão, resolvi abrir um encaixe em V para prender num gancho na parede. Eu poderia ter usado um disco de corte para fazer este trabalho, mas preferi abrir diversos furos e então rasgar estes furos e depois lixar. (Eu usei uma furadeira manual para não fazer barulho - outro motivo para evitar usar a retífica).

Para dependurar, eu utilizei um gancho mas foi preciso modificá-lo deixando-o com o formato de um L para facilitar a instalação. O meu objetivo era deixar o violão bem rente à parede. Para perfurar a parede não tem segredo - uma furadeira na função martelete (tive que fazer algum barulho.. hehe). Usei uma broca número 6 e uma bucha para parede na mesma medida.

Step 7: Aesthetic Detail

I added a little foot rubber on the back to prevent the guitar to stay scratching the wall. The support that is attached to the hook also has this spacing.
At the bottom, I installed another rubber foot solely for aesthetic purpose - to replace the pulley that held the guitar strap.

Eu adicionei um pezinho de borracha na parte traseira para evitar que o violão ficasse arranhando a parede. O suporte que fica preso ao gancho também tem esse espaçamento. Na parte de baixo, instalei outro pé de borracha unicamente para fim estético - para substituir a roldana que prendia a alça do violão.

Step 8: Fixing the Shelves

After all ready, just missing the main thing - install the acrylic shelves! I cleaned each before installing and used a hot glue gun to do the job. First I glued the base (remembering the correct position of each piece) and then I glued each of wooden stubs. I sawed several pieces of a joist and sanded each. Actually a little bit of hot glue would hold nicely the shelf but as the weather is very hot I do not want to risk bring down the precious items that will be stored in them!

To the outside (which will be very little visible) I used a furniture polish (which should never be used in an instrument!).

Fixando as prateleiras
Depois de tudo prontos, falta apenas o principal - instalar as prateleiras de acrílico! Limpei cada uma antes de instalar e utilizei uma pistola de cola quente para fazer o serviço. Primeiro colei a base (lembrando da posição correta de cada peça) e então colei cada um dos toquinhos de madeira. Eu serrei várias peças de um sarrafo e lixei cada uma. Na verdade um pouco de cola quente seguraria bem a prateleira mas como anda fazendo muito calor não quero correr o risco de derrubar os itens preciosos que estarão nelas armazenados!

Para a parte externa (que ficará bem pouco visível) eu usei um lustra-móveis (que absolutamente não deve ser usado em um instrumento de forma alguma!).
