Alternative Ways to Tie Your Shoes

Fastest way to tie your shoes in the typical bow pattern. Blow the loop it, swoop it, and pull method out of the water at your next time trials.

Step 1: The Cross

Just like when normally tying your shoes, you cross the laces and pull one side through to start the initial knot.

Step 2: Get Your Guns Out

Make your hands into the shape of a gun, thumb raised and your index finger extended for those of you who didn't have a childhood, while still holding the laces with your remaining fingers of each hand. Wrap your thumb over the top of the right lace and your left index finger under the left lace. Follow suite with your right index finger and left thumb creating what resembles a "Z" (as shown in picture 3) with the laces.

Step 3: The Pinch

Pinch the section between your left thumb and index finger using your right hand and vice versa with your left hand simultaneously. While holding the pinch, simply pull your hands apart and your shoe is tied. With practice, you can tie you shoe fairly quickly. See the video on the nest step

Wonderful, I'd re-think saying "use your guns" when demonstrating for the impressionable little people, but with the increasing fear of "hand guns" a little systematic desensitization could be a good thing. A friend taught me back in the mid-80's what she called the "Chinese way to tie your shoe". Over 20 years of shoe tie challenges, undefeated, it is about time for some competition. I like to call it the "double grasp, twist , hook, n pull" move. :) nice

I've been looking for a way to teach my 6 year old how to tie. He just doesn't have the dexterity for the bunny business. This is a great alternative. I saw the ian knot, but this "use your guns" method is easier than the fold two loops in opposite directions mess. I think I will try this with him tomorrow!
