Return to Previous Lesson: Writing the Code

Lesson Overview:

Now we'll actually build the pinwheel!

Step 1: Assemble the CD Hub

Your Arduino kit comes with a wooden motor adapter that fits perfectly in the hole of a compact disc (CD). We call this the "CD hub." Use the diagram and instructions below to assemble this part first.

The wooden parts should also have some engraved lettering on them to make this part easier.

  1. Assemble the CD hub by snapping part C into part B. Then gently press part D onto them.

  2. Gently press the motor shaft into the star shaped hole on the back of the CD hub.

  3. Continue to the next step.

Step 2: Attach the CD

Find the pre-cut paper pinwheel that comes with your kit and tape it onto the CD, using the picture below as a guide. Next you will snap this onto the CD hub to complete the whole assembly!

When you press the button on your pinwheel project, the CD will spin very rapidly. Be careful that it does not fly off! We suggest securing the CD to the CD hub with some glue.

  1. Place the paper onto the CD and secure it by taping the flaps onto the back of the disc.

  2. Attach the CD to the cross on the front of the CD hub. Use a drop of glue to hold it in place.

  3. Continue to the next step.

Step 3: Customize It!

What does the colored pattern look like when it is spinning? Try experimenting with other colors or patterns on a custom pinwheel cover. You can easily detach the current paper wheel from the CD and create your own!

Congratulations, you have completed this project!
