Introduction: Baconless Bacon

What happens if...

You open the fridge in the morning to discover that THERE'S NO BACON LEFT!!! No more bacon and eggs, no more bacon sandwiches, no more bacon waffles, no more bacon quiches, the list could go on!

Enter piggy 1 and piggy 2.

Piggy 1: No fear! You can substitute bacon with Baconless Bacon - a crispy, smoky, salty delight that is 100% vegetarian!

Piggy 2: Can it really be true?!

Piggy 1: You can bacon on it!

Exeunt.

Time: about 15 minutes

Enough bacon for: 4 people (unless one of them really likes bacon)

Supplies

  • 1 small potato
  • 2 tbs all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp barbecue sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 drops red food colouring
  • 2 tbs water
  • vegetable oil, for frying

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Step 2: Dry Ingredients

Mix together flour, salt, and pepper.

Step 3: Add the Wet Ingredients

Add maple syrup, barbecue sauce, soy sauce, food colouring, and water to the flour mixture. Mix until you have a smooth batter.

Step 4: The Potato

Wash and dry the potato. Peel strips using a vegetable peeler - having some skin at the edges gives a more bacon-y look to the end product!

Step 5: Put It All Together

Coat the potato strips in batter.

Step 6: Frying Time!

Cover the bottom of a frying pan with vegetable oil, and heat until a small drop of batter sizzles violently in the pan. Add the potato strips.

Step 7: Browned and Delicious

Flip after about a minute. The "bacon" is done when browned on both sides and crispy. Let it cool on a paper towel, and enjoy!
