If you are interested in creating this unique bedside table LED lamp & book holder in one, you are in the right place. I will show you the whole step by step build and a full build video on my Youtube channel.
Step 1: What Will You Need for This Project.
Acrylic sheets - I have used three 5mm thick sheets, and two 2mm
LED lights - I have used a plug and play set
Nice looking wood
Shellac and wax for finish
Step 2: Cutting Wood
In this set you have to cut the wood to the correct sizes. We will need three boards that are 21cm by 23cm.
When all boards are cut to the right sizes we need to use a mitre saw to cut 30 degree angles on the longer sides.
Step 3: Sanding and Gluing Up
In this step you need to sand all the boards to 180 or 220 grit, depending on your wood.
After that we will start gluing up the project together. I have used some painters masking tape and rubber bands to hold everything together.
Step 4: Cutting the Construction to Smaller Triangles
In this step I have used my table saw with a sled to cut the project into smaller triangles. I went for different thicknesses of the triangles I think that gave a more interesting look to the whole lamp.
Step 5: Cutting the Acrylic Sheets
In this step I have cut all the acrylic sheets to to correct sizes, using my band-saw. I have used one of the wooden triangles to mark the shape on the acrylic. Remember not to cut on the line, leave 1 or 2 mm from the line, if you cut the acrylic too small there is no turning back from it.
I went for the frosted look on my acrylic, to do that I have used my random orbital sander with grit 80.
Step 6: Gluing the Whole Project Together
In this step I have used 5 minute epoxy to bond the whole construction together. Just make sure the layers will not move or shift as it will lead to several hours of sanding to get it to the right form (that happened to me)
After the epoxy has set its time for sanding, i have went up to 240 grit.
Step 7: Base
At this stage I have used a sheet of plywood as a base that will cover all the LED light and the wires. I have cut the plywood 1.5cm smaller from each side than the base of the lamp. I have then sprayed it black, this will give the lamp a nice floating look.
Step 8: Cutting the Channels
In this step I have made some channels in the base of the lamp for the LED lights and the wires. Used hot glue gun to attach the LED's to the wooden construction, soldered all strips together and connected the power supply line and the switch.
Step 9: Finishing
In this step you need to attach the plywood base to the lamp with some screws.
I have used two coats of shellac with some light sanding between coats and then waxed it and polished to the desired sheen effect.
