originally i didn't planned to share it (as i feel that this is not a new or original tech) but somehow now i am sharing it (reason being there is not a proper DIY project for making Bike Mobile Charger), so if you find my work connected to some older post by some awesome geeks or not worth of sharing then i highly apologise.
I made this because so called waterproof mobile charger for bike are not waterproof they have a rubber or silicon cap to cover them but due to high temperature in India they broke or get loose and they are so visible on handle bar, as you can see i have Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 350 so charger would not look good on this so i came up with this idea why not assemble parts to make one for myself and what i made is a 5v 3A charger securely placed with bikes fuse box so now rain or water are no more tension.
I initially planned to connect every thing through my bikes fuse but it has brown wires, green wires, red wires, black wire so those wires blew my brain fuse and i skipped that too because i didn't want to blew any fuse or harm by sexy beast bike
Total project cost is 270 Rs.:
- Step Down Module = 170 Rs.
- USB Port = 10 Rs.
- wires = 40 Rs.
- switch = 50 Rs.
Step 1: Buy Adraxx LM2596
First of all you'll need a step down voltage converter module (12v to 5v DC)
I searched a lot of modules at different sites but as per customer review and all this charging module Adraxx LM2596 was best (its price is Rs. 170).
Now connection :
- -ve : Black Wire
- +ve : Red Wire
follow wire code to keep it simple while replacing or attaching it to bike
Step 2: Solder Wire on Module and Set Output Voltage
This module has variable input and output voltage so it has to be set. for that you require voltmeter but i didn't had one and i had no further use for it so i skipped it.
I used led strip power adapter which is 12v 3A as input to the module so that maximum output power would be max 12v and connected led strip on output pins. (if you don't have one but have laptop then use laptop charger it would be max 18v charger i have tested led strip with 35v charger they don't burn but even dont glow until you touch them them then rotate screw to get 12v to glow led properly and further more to reduce voltage further)
Then just turn the screw to higher resistance side if you don't know any thing then just turn screw a few times on any side when led brightness start to dim keep adjusting the screw and when it completely turns off still rotate screw 1 or 2 times now the output power is below 5v
Now connect usb port to it (i bought it from a shop for Rs. 10/-) to make it connect accurately i connected usb 5v led and soldered wires correctly
Now achieve proper led brightness by turning screw now its around 5v
Now remove usb led and connect mobile and use any battery charging monitor app and now let phone charge for few minutes and set battery charging voltage to approx 4.1v as mobile take input voltage to 5v but battery charge at max 4.2 volt and more for fast charge but please dont increase it to high voltage as it heats up phone so a 5v 3A charger is 15w so its enough for charging you phone or tablet
Step 3: Connect a Switch
mechanics connect bike chargers directly to battery or if you want a switch then through ignition switch.
It was a concern for me as chargers are not waterproof so it may blow your main fuse or ignition fuse and on modern bike the engine circuit etc...
so i connected a switch connected to battery so i can charge my phone or tablet without bike keys and my charger is not always on so improves its life and also if bike is not driven daily a direct connection may drain your battery in 2-3 weeks (i read it some where) so using switch solves all problems
purchased switch from bike accessories vendor for Rs. 50
Step 4: Module Placed Near Bike Fuse
Few months earlier one of my Led Controller got "puffed" or simply burnt i threw it but kept its outer plastic cover and this module fitted perfectly inside it and i wrote '+' '-' using pencil and taped it so it does not get rubbed because i didn't had pen near me and i felt a bit lazy to get up and pick pen placed on table near me also now i can say my project has graphite :-P
Step 5: Battery Connection
Remove Negative "-ve" 'Black' wire first followed by Positive "+ve" 'Red' wire
and connect Possitive "+ve" 'Red' wire first followed by Negative "-ve" 'Black' wire
only if required
I don't know much but because electrons flow from -ve side creating voltage flow from +ve side i connected switch to -ve side or following the concept to remove -ve first from battery attach switch to -ve side
Step 6: Finished
That's all folks wire goes through fuel tank like other electronic cables
its neat its good its done
