Book-house Lamp

Introduction: Book-house Lamp

M A T E R I A L S :

  • hardcover books (at least 4) — select books based on the width of the spine and the thinness of the pages; one the books' covers will be used for the roof and an entire book will be used for the base.
  • LED battery powered tea light

T O O L S :

  • hot glue gun, hot glue sticks
  • X-acto knife, scissors

Step 1: Create the Base

Choose a book to use for the base.

Thinner books will be the easiest to work with.

Cut a hole into the cover to the size of your LED light's base.

Use the rim of the hole as a guide as you cut through the pages of the book. Continue until you cut through the back cover.

Step 2: Glue the Book Shut

Step 3: Remove Spine From Book

Separate the cover from the pages

Slit open the inner hinge (where the inside cover and flyleaf meet) of both the front and back of the book.

Remove the spine

Cut off the spine from the front and back covers.

Step 4: Cut Spine to Size, Cut Backing

Cut the spine to size

Cut the separated spine to the height of the house according to personal preference.

Cut the backing

Cut a strip from the cover of the book to match the size of the spine. This will support the walls of the lamp from the inside

Repeat three times (four sets of two in total)

Step 5: Glue Strips Onto Paper Walls

Cut a page to the width of the book.

Make sure the page extends far above the height of the spines.

Glue the strips to the edges of the page.

Leave a 1 centimeter border on the bottom; once folded, this will be used as a tab for attachment.

Glue the spine to the front of the page and the strip of book cover on the backside, sandwiching the paper in between.

Repeat for the other side of the page.

Repeat these steps for the parallel wall

Step 6: Finish the Tops of the Walls

Fold over the top corners of the page

Line up the corners to tops of the spines.

Trim the corners, leaving two small folds

Step 7: Affix Walls to the Book Base

Glue the bottom tab to the edge of the base along with the supports.

Step 8: Glue Supports for Roof

Using the previous method, make four sets of supports for the pointy parts of the walls. Cut one end of each strip at a forty-five degree angle so that it lines up with the vertical supports.

Step 9: Make a Cover for the LED Base

Cut a circle out of a book cover, making sure that it is bigger than the hole in the base.

Cut out a small window for the light switch.

Glue cover to the bottom of the base.

Step 10: Affix LED to the Base

Affix the LED to the base, lining up the switch with the window.

Step 11: Glue Spines to the Base (optional)

Cut spines to the width of the pages of the base book and glue them on.

Step 12: Add Roof

Remove the cover of the book you selected for the roof.

Cut the edges of the front and back covers to minimize the overhang.

Glue the roof to the roof supports on each side.

Step 13: Add the Last Two Walls

Select pages for the last two walls.

Fold the pages so that they have a tab on each side.

Glue the tabs to the base, wall supports, and roof.

Step 14: Celebrate!

Good job. Well done.
