Introduction: Calculating a Pulleys Based Speed Drive (Variador De Velocidad a Poleas)

About: I am leaving Instructables, soon. I am very upset with the turnaround that has the page to post the manufacture of a dildo. Me llamo Osvaldo Julio Schiavoni I speak Spanish, not English. I use automatic tran…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few years ago I experimented with double cone drivers. These have the advantage that they can vary the speed infinitesimally but also have the disadvantage that they do not transmit enough power because the belt is slipping due to the limited contact surface with cones.

So I decided to replace them with a set of pulleys, two sets of four of them staggered.

Step 1: Materiales

----------------------------------

As a material for pulleys, I used 12mm phenolic plywood. As belt, I used round polyurethane band, which is a very easy to work, strong and economic material. A diameter of 8 or 10 mm is sufficient for 1/2 or 1 HP engine.

Step 2: Ahora Sí, Calcular Los Diámetros (Now Calculating Diameters)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preferably work on graph paper, which saves us trace the lines with square.
Draw a horizontal line representing the centers of the pulleys. Make it at the bottom of the sheet (Img 1). Knowing the available engine speed (say 1450 rpm) and the minimum speed that we want to get (say 220 rpm) have to obtain a reduction of 220/1450 = 0.15 (approximately). Trace on the horizontal line to the left end, a vertical line of length equal to the radius to be the smaller motor pulley set, for example 2 cm (Img 2).

Step 3: Continue...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Trace to the right of it other vertical lines, equally spaced from one another, for example 1 cm. Draw enough lines so that you can then choose sets that suit us (Img 3).

Calculate the radius that will have the driven largest pulley, dividing 2 / 0.15 = 13,333.

At the other end of the assembly line, or to the right, mark that measure in the last vertical line (Img 4).

Step 4: Finishing

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Draw a slanted line through these two points. This line will represent, at intersections with vertical lines, the radii of the various possible pulleys (Img 5).

Each set of pulleys (the engine set and the spindle set) will have as many pulleys as you want to give your speed drive. I chose 4, but there are less and more variable speed drivers. That's a matter of taste, and the will that you have to work.

The engine set must have the line (pulley) on the left, and the spindle set must have the line on the right. If the MAXIMUM speed resulting from applying the largest motor pulley to the smallest spindle pulley is too low, you can opt to choose alternating the joint between pulleys, ie lines 1,3,5,7 for the motor side and the lines n-6, n-4, n-2 and n (16, 18, 20 and 22) on the other (Img 6). If it still does not satisfy you, skip two instead of one, or 1,4,7,10 and 13,16,19,22. And so until you get the most appropriate for your desired maximum speed. Never mind that the same pulley included in both sets. In my case, TWO pulley diameters are shared between both sets.

Step 5: Tener En Cuenta (take Into Account)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

When turning pulleys, note that the resulting radio will need to be measured AFTER DOING THE GROOVE which belt seats. This means that if this will be 3 mm deep (for a belt of 8 mm), the initial radius of each pulley must be 3 mm larger.

Step 6: Making the Belt (la Correa)

-----------------------------------------------------------

To make the belt, measure it "in situ", ie embracing the pulleys sets in whatever working position. Cut the ends chamfered, roughly 45 degrees. Heat an iron or other metal plate, resting the ends of the polyurethane band on the hot plate, and when the polyurethane begins to melt, quickly join the ends ensuring that they match well. Let it cool, and try tugging if the weld was strong. If not, repeat the procedure. Once given the welding for good, clean it eliminating the burrs.
