Hi, this is my first Instructable so be gentle please =D

This idea came up to me when my brother in law was going to get married and I wanted to do something nice for them. That's when I though about making them something myself so people would put the gift envelopes in the wedding. But searching on internet for ideas, I wasn't convince about all the results until I found the option of using a birdcage as a wedding card box and as I think I'm pretty good with cardboard (humble me) so "I should design one made of cardboard" and that was it.

So I jumped in Rhinoceros© and started modeling the cardboard birdcage and then jumped again into Autocad© to work with the template later I would print and use to cut the cardboard.

* I'm making this in Spanish too cause I wan't my family and friends to read it.

Este es mi primer Instructable así que sean gentiles conmigo por favor.

Esta idea se me ocurrió cuando mi cuñado se iba a casar y yo quería hacerles algo para la boda. Entonces se me ocurrió hacerles la caja para que los invitados pusieran los sobres de regalo, pero buscando en internet no estaba muy convencida de las opciones convencionales, hasta que vi la idea de usar una pajarera decorada y como me considero buena usando cartón pensé "debería diseñar una pajarera hecha de cartón" y así fue como lo hice.

Entonces abrí Rhinoceros© para comenzar a modelar la pajarera, luego exporté las líneas a Autocad© para trabajar la plantilla que iba a imprimir para cortar las piezas de la pajarera.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Materials:

- 2 corrugated cardboard sheets (2mtrs x 1mtr)

- 3 Brown Paperboard sheets (1mtr x 0.7mtrs)

- 3 White Paperboard sheets (1mtr x 0.7mtrs)

- 1 Red pattern Paperboard sheets (0.6 mtrs x 0.45mtrs)

- 1 Micro- corrugated cardboard sheet (DIDN'T USE IT BUT YOU CAN ADD IT IF YOU WAN'T)

Tools:

- 1 Cutting board ( so your wife / husband / mom / partner would get upset)

- Measure tape.

- Utility knife.

- Cutting ruler.

- Scotch tape.

- White glue ( i used white glue for wood but to glue the paperboard i recommend using spray adhesive)

About the reason why i chose different types of cardboard and paperboard is because every one of them has an attribute I will describe next, either way the colors I chose where the color theme of the wedding, if I have to choose I probably wouldn't chose the white paperboard because you have to be super careful not to stain it.

- Corrugated cardboard: This type of cardboard has the qualities that has structure, it stays plane, has an optimum thickness and it isn't very heavy so you can use it to add structure and steadiness without adding much weight, you would not believe the kind of structure this cardboard can add to a project. The bad thing about it is that if you are not very careful you can step on it and it changes it's thickness, the appearance isn't very pretty and it's difficult to cut straight because of the corrugated paperboard inside unless you cut it in parallel or perpendicular to the streaks.

- Brown Cardboard: This one when you glue it to the corrugated cardboard add more straightness and you don't have to deal with the lines of the face of the corrugated cardboard. The mix between brown paperboard and corrugated cardboard is great. it forms kind of a sandwich that works very well structurally.

- White and red paperboard: I couldn't translate the actual name of this type of the white one, in Spanish is called "cartulina opalina". This is important because even tho I didn't had a choice with the colors of the birdcage, it's important that the cardboard wouldn't get ruin because of the moist in the glue. I mostly use it because it gives a nice clean finish to the birdcage. Never the less, you can also just paint it.

Materiales:

- 2 Láminas de cartón corrugado (2mtrs x 1mtr)

- 3 Láminas de cartón marrón (1mtr x 0.7mtrs)

- 3 Láminas de opalina lisa (1mtr x 0.7mtrs)

- 1 Lámina de cartulina roja con patrón de puntitos (0.6 mtrs x 0.45mtrs)

- 1 Lámina de cartón microcorrugado (NO LA USÉ PERO SI QUIEREN LA PUEDEN USAR PARA DECORAR)

Herramientas:

- 1 Cutting mat ( Para no molestar a tu esposa/ esposo/ madre/ compañero)

-Cinta métrica.

- Trincheta.

- Regla para cortar.

- Cinta adhesiva.

- Cola blanca / Pega blanca (Usé cola para madera, pero para la cartulina recomiendo el spray adhesivo).

La razón por la cual escogí usar varios tipos de cartón es porque cada una tiene una cualidad que combinadas forman cosas muy buenas. Los colores que usé son porque son los colores de la boda, si hubiese tenido que elegir probablemente no hubiese usado cartulina blanca porque tienes que tener mucho cuidado en no mancharla. A continuación, las razones:

-Cartón corrugado: Este cartón tiene la cualidad de que tiene estructura, se mantiene plano, tiene un grosor óptimo y no es muy pesado así que lo puedes usar para muchos propósitos sin agregar mucho peso. Lo malo es que si no tienes cuidado y lo pisas pierde grosor y se deforma, además su apariencia no es muy bonita y es difícil de cortar a menos que vayas a favor o perpendicular a las vetas de este.

- Cartón marrón: Este cartón pegado al cartón corrugado agrega mucha más firmeza y no tienes que lidiar con las líneas en las caras del corrugado. La mezcla entre estos dos es muy buena para muchas cosas, forman una especie de sándwich que funciona muy bien estructural mente.

- Cartulina Opalina y Cartulina roja con patrón de puntitos: Es importante informar que elegí la cartulina opalina porque esta no se deshace ni se arruga cuando le hechas una cantidad óptima de cola blanca. Usé estas cartulinas porque me parece que le da un mejor acabado a la pajarera, pero también lo puedes pintar (y sale muchos más fácil si lo pintas).

Step 2: Parts of the Bridcage

The Birdcage is made of two parts, the cage that's made of ribs with the inserts and the box.

After I had the design in Autocad, I printed It but as I didn't had much time to got to a printing place to plot in a much larger scale I used this little trick I like to use when I don't have much time. Basically I divided the draw with rectangles that represent the real paper size scale and print the divided draw with the rectangles so later I can use them to join them with precision.
With the design in lines in Autocad, I made 3 types of templates for you to print, acording to the paper size you'll use.

La caja está compuesta por dos partes, la jaula, compuesta por las costillas y sus encajes, y la caja.

Después de que terminé el diseño en líneas lo imprimí, pero como no tuve suficiente tiempo para ir a un centro de impresiones e imprimirlo en una escala más grande, usé este truco que me gusta usar cuando no tengo mucho tiempo. Básicamente divido el dibujo en rectángulos a escala real del tamaño de papel e imprimo el dibujo dividido con el rectángulo para que me sirva de guía cuando lo vaya a cortar.

Con el diseño en líneas hice 3 tipos de plantillas para que la imprimas dependiendo del tamaño de papel que desees usar.

Step 3: Use of the Template

TEMPLATE USE:

The hardest part while using a template is to shape it on the cardboard, many people use carbon paper or something similar but the cardboard get permanently marked, even if you try to erase it. That's why I use a thumbtack to nail it in the cardboard and mark it. The thing s that you need to be very careful is when it's applied in a harder cardboard like the brown paper board as the mark is hard to visualize and you could not see it when you cut the paperboard.

La parte más complicada cuando se usa una plantilla es plasmarla en el cartón, mucha gente usa papel carbón o algo similar pero el cartón queda marcado así se intente borrar. Por eso yo uso un chinche (Thumbtack) para clavarlo en el cartón y así marcarlo. Lo que hay que tener mucho cuidado es cuando se aplica en un cartón más duro pues no se ven muy bien y uno se puede confundir cuando corta.

Step 4: Cutting the Cardboard

You'll need to cut all the parts of the birdcage according to each Cardboard so you can glue them together like a sandwich.

This means, for each rib and the rib's insert you'll need to cut 1 piece from the corrugated cardboard and twice the piece form the brown paperboard, and for the box one for each, corrugated cardboard and brown paperboard.

Though the process is long and tedious I strongly recommend you to cut all of the pieces at once, that way you can be sure you won't forget anything and you'll end faster.

* Tip: If you have problems separating the edges after cutting them, you can cut it from both directions to make it easier.

Tienes que cortar todas las partes de acuerdo a cada tipo de cartón para que los puedas pegar como un sándwich.

Esto significa que por cada costilla y encaje de costilla tienes que cortar una pieza de cartón corrugado y dos de cartón marrón, mientras que de las piezas de la caja sólo necesitas cortar una de cada tipo de cartón.

A pesar que el proceso es largo y tedioso realmente recomiendo que cortes todas las piezas de una vez, así estas seguro de no olvidar nada y terminarás más rápido.

*Truco: Si tienes problemas separando las esquinas después de que las has cortado, prueba cortarla en ambas direcciones con la esquina de origen, así será más fácil separarla.

Step 5: Glue the Sandwich

To paste the cardboard I used white glue, as said before, you can use any type of glue that you think is better. I used this one because I know how to work with it (and already had it in my house).

Make sure when you are going to paste the cardboard to spread very well the glue (if you use white glue) because it's very liquid and the piece can get deformed, in this case I recommend to use a brush to spread it.

Then is important to put the piece under some weight, like a bunch of books, but remember that the corrugates cardboard loses width if you put too much weight over it, so be careful.

Para pegar los cartones usé cola blanca, como dije antes, puedes usar otro tipo de pega que creas conveniente. Yo usé esta porque sé trabajar con ella (y porque ya la tenía en la casa).

Asegúrate cuando estés pegando las piezas de esparcir bien la pela (si usaste cola blanca) porque es muy líquida y puede deformar el cartón, para esto usé un pincel.

Luego es importante cuando terminas de pegar el sándwich poner las piezas debajo de algo pesado como unos libros, pero recuerda que el cartón corrugado pierde grosor cuando le pones mucho peso, así que ten cuidado.

Step 6: Pre-Finishíng the Sandwich

Before we continue to the finishing with the white paperboard is necessary to "pre-finish" the sandwich. This happens because the corrugated cardboard veins are hard to cut strait and it can get in the way when we proceed to paste the borders.

To make the borders even i use the blade parallel to the edge to cut all the unwanted veins. On the other hand, you can try to cut them perpendicular to the edge like if you where cutting the piece again.

Antes de continuar con el acabado de cartulina blanca es necesario hacer un "pre-acabado" al sándwich. Esto ocurre porque el interior del cartón corrugado es difícil de cortar y a veces sobresalen y esto puede dificultar el proceso de pegado de los bordes.

Para emparejar los bordes yo uso la hojilla de la trincheta paralela al borde para cortar las venas sobresalientes. Por otro lado, puedes también intentar cortar perpendicular al borde como si estuvieras cortando la pieza otra vez.

Step 7: Preliminary Assembly

This step is important because you can make sure everything is OK with the inserts.

* Careful not to blend the ribs.

* I recommend you begin assembling the middle ribs, then the others.

Este paso es importante porque puedes ver que todas las piezas estén encajando bien.

* Cuidado de no doblar las costillas encajándolas.

* Recomiendo comenzar ensamblando las costillas del medio y luego las demás.

Step 8: White Paperboard Finishing

To begin the final look of the pieces put less glue in the face than the used to paste the cardboard, then spread it (really well) with a brush. Later put the glued sandwich in the paperboard and press with your fingers the back face. With the utility knife cut the borders of the piece.Then cut the insert holes.

* The insert holes are hard to cut, that's why I recommend to carefully, cut it faced up.

* Is probable that when you paste the face of the sandwich to the paperboard it comes with bubbles. To solve this, quickly with the paperboard faced up press with your (clean!) fingers and the bubbles will disappear.

* You can apply this steps to the pattern paperboard.

Para comenzar a darle el acabado final a las piezas, coloca menos pega de la que utilizaste con el cartón y luego espárcelo (muy bien) con un pincel. Luego coloca la cara con cola en la cartulina y presiona con los dedos la cara de atrás. Con la trincheta, corta los bordes de la pieza, luego corta los orificios de ensamblaje.

* Los orificios de ensamblaje son difíciles de cortar, por eso recomiendo que cuidadosamente lo cortes con la cara hacia arriba.

* Puedes aplicar esto pegando la cartulina con patrón.

Step 9: Painting

Well, as you already had cut 44 pieces (without the white paperboard) you'll probably consider another way to finish the birdcage.

As said before, painting is perfectly possible and viable, even, easier. If you want to skip the white paperboard and just pain it all you'll need to do is to cover the borders if you don't want people to see the cardboard.

I painted the inner part of the box because I was way too lazy to cover it with paper board. nevertheless I think it look pretty great, it doesn't look bad at all.

Como ya has cortado 44 piezas (sin contar la cartulina) probablemente considerarás otra forma de acabar la pajarera.

Como dije anteriormente, pintarlo es perfectamente posible, viable y hasta más sencillo. Si no quieres usar la cartulina de acabado y pintarla, sólo tienes que forrar los bordes si no quieres que se vea el cartón.

Yo pinté con pinturas al frío la parte de adentro de la caja porque fui muy perezosa para cubrirla con cartulina, sin embargo, creo que quedó bastante bien y no se ve mal.

Step 10: Covering the Borders

If you don't want the borders of the cardboard to be seen, I recommend to cover them with 0.30in (7mm) width strips.

Si no quieres que se vean los bordes del cartón recomiendo forrarlos con tiras de 7mm (0.30 in) de grosor.

Step 11: Assembling the Box

Paste the sides of the box with the base.

If you remember in the templates I put different sizes of short side of the box, that's because the larger short side covers the border of the large sides.

* To help you keep the pieces together while pasting I recommend you to use Scotch tape, with the precaution that it may rip the paperboard when you remove it, so be careful.

Pega los lados de la caja a la base.

Si recuerdas en las plantillas agregue diferentes tipos de lados cortos de la caja, eso es porque el lado más largo de los cortos cubren los bordes de los lados largos.

* Para mantener los lados de la caja juntos mientras se pegan, recomiendo usar cinta adhesiva con la precaución de que puede arrancar la cartulina al despegarla, así que ten cuidado.

Step 12: Assembling the Cage

Assemble the cage the same way you did in the preliminary assembly. In the picture you can see how I started with the corners, that's why I tell you to begin with the middle ribs because I had to take out two of the corner ribs so I could finish the assembly.

* I didn't use glue, is not necessary, maybe just in the base of the cage (the large insert), but you don't have to paste it.

And yay! you are done.

Arma la jaula de la misma forma que ensamblaste preliminarmente. En la foto puedes ver que comencé con las costillas de las esquinas, es por eso que te dije que comenzaras con las costillas del medio porque yo tuve que sacar las esquineras para poder terminar de ensamblar las demás.

* No usé pega, no es necesario, tal ves en la base de la jaula, pero no tienen que pegarlo si no quieres.

Y listo! ya está lista.
