Introduction: Chaos Spiral (Hypnosis Spiral)

About: Curious... Creative

You can 3D print this object as well but be sure not to print magnet and bearings :) will need the original one 3D printed will not work. 😁

Here are the things to collect before you begin...

__________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Basic Tools

2. Battery 2 AA

(Well if you are electronics geek you can use 12V big battery as well, will need circuit adjustments though)

3. 2 Bearing 693zz (Can be collected from Scarp DVD writer, Hard Drive)(OD8mm ID3mm Bore 4mm)

Savage from anywhere, if diameters are different no need to worry, adjust the design accordingly. πŸ˜…

4. Rod that can fit into the bearing and plastic refill or any part that can help fix bearing at a certain distance on the rod. ( I used Bicycle Spoke as a rod and a refill from the BIC pen.)

5. Circuit Items

Copper wire 28 Guage around 50 Grams (For Circuit Coil)

PCB board 2x3 Inch (buy bigger you can cut extra right!😊)

Capacitor 3300uF 25v3.

Capacitor 1000uF 25v4.

Transistor 2N2222 (or 2N3904)

Transistor 2N39066

Any simple Diode or Zener diode(both will work as we are working on extremely small voltage)

Resistor 100k

Potentiometer 1Meg.( Preset for controlling overall coil volts)

LED 3Volt (yellow or white or any)

Red, blue, yellow, black wires

Solder wire, Soldering flux, Wax( For protecting back side of PCB)__________________________________________________________________________________________

Caution! If you're planning to use a bigger battery you will have to calculate your circuit differently maybe try Matlab perhaps your brain!

3D printers not to worry. Link to included.

Not for rich guys,😊 Well if you have a 3D printer you do not need this...

The link for 3D design will be attached to the step it is being made by us.

1. Aluminum sheet 20cmX20cm or more.X1

2.Cardboard sheet 30CM or more X2

3. Pen cover that can encase the bearing inside it.X2

4. Glue gun or Araldite ( I used Araldite, glue is alternative)

5. Acrylic or Oil paint or spray paint.

6. 2 Battery cell Casing (πŸ˜‰You better find it from any scrap like remote controls, gaming controller, toy and much more will just need one though)

Safety Gears, If you are not confident, you better wear it.

Step 1: Circuit Works Step 1: Making Coil

You will need scale to measure the length, wire spool, rigid stuff to hold coil, glue gun or Araldite to hold the coil.

Rather than measuring the weight of the coil as I do not have a small weight scale, I measured the diameter, and thickness of the coil, Which is 12mm thick, 38mm outside diameter, 5mm Inside Diameter. You can use a pencil, pen, or anything similar to keep 5mm inside diameter.

Well, we are not creating tesla coil and that's why we do not need to take precise measurements.

That's okay if you take 10mm instead of 12mm. It does not make much difference.

Start winding as shown in the image and nearly after each 20 to 25 loop add some glue or Araldite, so it can stick together. Once it gets near to that 38mm diameter keep some extra wire to connect to the circuit.

The end product should be like as shown in the last image.

If you have a multimeter you can measure resistance between two ends of the coil and should be near to 10 to 12 ohm.

Step 2: Circuit Works Step 1: PCB Design

Solder the PCB as per circuit diagram.

1. Solder the Potentiometer and LED with wires as we will put it separately from the main PCB for flexibility.

2. Put transistors, capacitors, resistor, Diode, potentiometer wires, one black wire to the battery(-), coil and LED(+), second red wire for LED(-) and coil, third yellow wire for joining battery(+) and in PCB as shown in the figure. Check the circuit diagram to figure out connections. If you still have any trouble figuring out connections then just let me know in comments.

3. Solder the wires and all chips using soldering machine, wire, and flux. (If you do not know how to solder tell your friend, who knows how to solder, to complete this job for you.)

4. After doing that remove Excessive solder and if you have wax to prevent Wire breakage, melt wax on the PCB soldering part(side).

5. Use soldering to join coil, battery, and LED wires.

Step 3: Making Fancy Things Step 1: Spiral Design

Take the cardboard. Mark dimensions as pictures, and Draw circle. Make uniform Hypnosis like shape using a compass(drawing). I started by 24 equal parts from the smallest circle and drawing an arc between the outermost circle and 2nd large circle. Matching the end of 2nd large circle arc point with the inner one and accordingly.

There are many types of Hypnosis circles you can take constrain.

Draw it, cut it, and glue it to the aluminum sheet. The aluminum sheet should be 40mm in diameter and to fix bearing punch hole of the same diameter.

If you are having trouble glue cardboard to the sheet then use a paper towel or tissue to make it more rigid.

To fix the bearing use Pen piece, so just in case if bearing ever needs to be changed it can be removable. ( Especially if you are using the Chinese one like me.πŸ˜ƒ)

Lastly, add 1 magnet on each spiral put it on the top of 2nd largest circle, For equal weight on both sides and to balance the spiral, I glued some wood to the spiral.

Let it dry and paint it.

πŸ˜’This job is lot simpler for a 3D printer.

Step 4: Making Fancy Things Step 2: Box Design

If you want to 3D print, you can go up here.

Others get ready with your tools and safety gear.

Cut wood or flooring as per the dimensions and glue it use the holder or your hand to pressure hold the parts. Make a hole and put a plastic(use and through pen part or any alternatives), to hang the rod that will hold the bearing and kinetic sculpture. Refer to the 3D model if you are confused about any dimensions.

You can use Ground wire or bicycle Spokes as a rod. I used refill plastic to keep my bearing apart from each other.

Will fix the coil to the wood as well. Assemble the rod and 1st spiral. Mark the 2nd largest circle on the wood bar. The middle of the coil should be on that mark. Stick it using Glue. Let it dry and paint it.

When you assemble the second hypnosis spiral on the top of the first one makes sure there is about 6 to 12 mm space between the magnets and it should go far from each other when it comes near.

I made a battery shell myself. Images and dimensions are posted. I would suggest, take it from a toy or remote control using the same battery as it will save time.

Step 5: Final Correction and Testing

Well, it took me 2 Hours to just get the circuit working had to set up potentiometer adjustment to setup proper circuit voltage. According to the magnet you use and coil you make, you will have to set up the value. The basic principle is that when the magnet comes near to the coil, the coil will generate potential energy which will be faded to the transistor and then transistor switches the electric current's direction, resulting in coil forcing magnet to go far. The coil generates the power that will be stored in the capacitor but to keep the magnet running coil will also use some of the power which is used from the battery.

Best of Luck...
