Intro: Cheap Pizza Bread
I was inspired to make this dish when I decided to make something useful out of those 20 cent rolls in most super markets (usually in a big bin in the bakery of a grocery store).
I got 5 of these cheap rolls for just $1, and I already had some pizza sauce and toppings left over from another recent pizza dish I made. All in all, this dish can easily feed 4 people, it's crazy delicious, and it costs less than $8!
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
First things first: put a rack in your oven about 6-7 inches from the broiler. Preheat it to 450 degrees.
Gather up a few simple ingredients!
- Sub Rolls/Large dinner rolls (We will be splitting them in half, so you'll get twice as many pieces of pizza bread out of them)
- Pizza sauce (I got one with herbs and garlic already in it)
- Cheese (I used a finely grated Italian cheese blend, it had 4 different awesome cheeses in it!)
- Pepperoni (or any other toppings you like)
- Red Onions, chopped (one of my favorite pizza toppings of all time)
Obviously you can use whatever you like on your pizza, these are just a few of my favorites.
Step 2: Split the Loaves in Half
In order to use the rolls as the crust for our pizza bread, we must split them in half.
Be very careful when doing this! Make sure you have a sharp knife and your hands are out of the way of the blade.
Stand a loaf vertically and use your knife to gently saw it in half. Even if the loaf is a bit crusty, you should be able to get through it easily.
Step 3: Oil and Toast the Bread Halves
Although this step isn't 100% necessary, I think it is a good idea to toast the bread halves to make them a bit more water resistant. In my experience, pizza sauce soaks into pizza bread and makes it mushy.
Simply brush on a little vegetable or canola oil, place each halve on a cookie sheet, and toast for 30-45 seconds in your 450 degree oven.
Remove the pan with gloves and get ready to add your toppings.
Step 4: Dress Your Pizza!
After removing your toasted bread halves, set your oven to broil.
Spread a layer of pizza sauce on each half, top it with cheese, onions, pepperoni, and whatever else you like on a pizza. I didn't caramelize the onions, I find the heat from the oven cooks it enough for my taste.
Place the cookie sheet with the pizzas under the broiler. It will take anywhere from 45 seconds to 2 minutes for the cheese to become bubbly and delicious.
Make sure you keep an eye on your pizza! Leaving your pizza under the broiler for just 10 seconds too long will result in burning!
Step 5: Enjoy!
Now you'll never have to buy frozen pizza again! This dish is super simple, cheap, and great for parties! Just buy a ton of different ingredients and let everyone create their own pizzas.
