In this instructable I will show you how to improve a portable circular saw with a custom made fence. Most portable circular saws come with a short, inaccurate fence. These make it hard to cut narrow pieces.
The fence in this instructable extends for the whole length of the saw, improving surface finish and making the saw almost as accurate as a table saw.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

The tools that you need are:
2 small G-clamps
a steel rule
a hacksaw
a file
a portable circular saw. Both of my circular saws will work with this mod but your one may not.

The only material that is needed is a short piece of angle iron or aluminium, with a width of 25 to 35 mm.

Step 2: Measure and Cut

Measure the length of your saw's foot. Add 15mm and mark the angle iron with this length.
Cut the angle iron with the hacksaw. This cut doesn't need to be perfect.
Use the file to clean the burr off the cut piece to make it safer and more accurate.
You have now finished your fence.

Step 3: Setup

Disconnect the saw from power and hold it upsidedown. A vise can be handy here.
Open the blade guard and wedge something in to keep it open. I used a pencil.
If you are going to cut a strip the same width as a piece you already have, you can place that piece between the blade and the fence. If not, you will need to use a steel rule.
Use a clamp to hold one end of the fence to the foot of the saw. Align the fence and clamp the other end.
Your fence is now ready to use.

Step 4: Using It

You can now use your improved circular saw to cut timber.
