Introduction: DIY Bedding: Pillowcase 3 Different Styles

Today I will show you how to make 3 Different Style Pillowcases

You just need to do some measurements, a little math for the most responsible part)) and the sewing process will be easy

Let's start!

Step 1: What You’ll Need

    • Bedding Fabric (See next steps how to calculate exact amount)
    • Decorative ruffle
    • Scissors
    • Ruler and Tape measure
    • All purpose thread
    • Pins
    • Sewing machine
    • Iron and ironing board

    Step 2: Standard Pillowcase Measurements

    Standard pillowcase have a solid sewn edge, which fits perfectly around your 'Standard' pillow. Measure your pillow and note the size, do some calculations, like in my example and cut 2 pieces of fabric for 2 pillowcases.

    My pillow measures 75cm by 45cm, so I cut 175cm x 50cm

    Total Width= 150cm(back&front) + 20cm(pocket/envelope) + 4cm(allowance)

    Total Length= 45cm + 4cm(allowance)

    Step 3: Standart Pillowcase Sewing

      • Take your fabric and sew the edges (short ones) to make beautiful, professional looking endings. Work on wrong side.
      • Fold one time 1cm(0.4") from edge, and another 1cm(0.4") to hide raw edge and sew on.
      • Fold fabric to make an envelope (pocket) with right side up. Measure the proportions to fit your pillow and Pin It

      French Seam

          • Sew the Top and Bottom edges (long ones) on right side, 1cm(0.4") from margin.
          • Trim a half centimeter closer to seams. Turn up, straighten and press the seams.
          • Now sew again at 1,2cm(0.5") along the edge.
          • Your simple standart Pillowcase is ready! just turn on and press one more time.

          Step 4: Oxford Pillowcase Measurements

          Oxford pillowcases have a wide stitched flat hem around the edge to create a border (or flap).

          Measure your pillow (mine is 75x45cm). Add 5cm to this measurement to allow for the “Oxford” border making and allowance all round.

          The Front:

          Total Width= 75cm + 10(borders)+ 4cm(allowance)

          Total Length= 45cm + 10(borders)+ 4cm(allowance)

          The Back:

          Total Width= 37,5cm + 5(borders) + 5(pocket/envelope) + 4cm(allowance)

          Total Length= 45cm + 10(borders)+ 4cm(allowance)

          (1pcs) 90 x 60cm for front panel

          (2pcs) 52 x 60cm for back panels

          Step 5: Oxford Pillowcase Sewing

          • Take 2 back sides parts and sew one edge of each, to make good-looking ending. Fold one time 1cm(0.4") from edge, and another 1cm(0.4") and sew on, so the raw edge will be enclosed.
          • Now, pin 3 parts in place with right face out. The finished seam should be in the center of the pillow, raw edges should be matched up on the outside. Then sew along edges, using a 1cm(0.4") seam allowance. Trim off the uneven edges. Turn the entire pillow case wrong side out and press all the edges flat.
          • Sew again at 1.2cm(0.5") all around. Turn the cushion the right side out through the envelope opening and press the cover, easing out the corners and flattening the seams.
          • Pin at 5cm(2") from edges around across the cushion to prevent the fabric slipping when you come to sew the border. Draw a line on the pillow cover with a textile chalk/vanishing pen.

          • Sew on and it's finished

          Step 6: Small Decorative Cushion Measurements

          Measure your pillow insert’s dimensions. Make sure you are measuring around the curve of your pillow and not just the finished width.

          Front panel:

          Add 1-1.5cm(0.5") to every edges for the seam allowance.

          Back panels:

          Total width= Pillow width/2 + 3cm(envelope) + 2cm(allowance)

          Total height= Pillow height + 2cm(allowance)

          Cut your fabric in a rectangle with the following dimensions.

          In mine case (40x30cm):

          (1pcs) 42 x 32cm for front panel

          (2pcs) 25 x 32cm for back panels

          Step 7: Small Decorative Cushion Sewing

          • Attach the ruffle to the front square of the pillow pieces with pins and sew to the right side of fabric, back-stitching at beginning and end.
          • Now take 2 back sides parts and sew one edge of each, to make good-looking ending. Fold one time 1cm(0.4") from edge, and another 1cm(0.4") and sew on across the hems ( like Oxford pillow cover)
          • Place front panel right side facing up with ruffles inside and take the first back panel and lay the right side down (right sides together). Place 2nd back panel on top of the first, right side down (the finished seams should be in the center of the pillow).
          • Pin in place and sew all the pieces together. Neaten the edge of all pieces with a zig-zag stitch or use an overlock if you have one.
          • Trim off the uneven edges, turn on and you are done!
