Turn a stool into a side table. In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to turn an iron chain stool into a modern side table with a concrete table top. This is an inexpensive solution for outdoor decor and it gives new life to an older piece of furniture. When you’re outdoors enjoying the weather in the Summer and Spring its nice to be able to have a place to set your drink down. This is a great way to utilize what you already have.

Concrete can be messy and in some cases intimidating but once you get started you’ll quickly find that its not that bad after all. I found it rather easy to work with once I understood the elements of concrete and things I should consider when working with it. I think this may be the start of a great building connection.

Step 1: Materials

Fast-Setting Concrete Mix
Vinyl Concrete Patcher (Optional- I used this at the bottom of the molding because this is a finner mix that fast setting concrete to reduce imperfections in the setting of the mold)
14 in. clear vinyl saucer
WD-40
Small bucket
Wooden stick
120 grit sand paper
Conduit Straps – to attach the table to the stool
Concrete paint or acrylic paint

Step 2: Prepare Planter Saucer

Coat the saucer with wd-40.

This saucer has a sun image in it so using a finer mix of concrete would reduce the imperfections during the curing of the concrete.

Step 3: Mixing the Concrete

Mix the concrete mix in a small bucket. Stir it with a scrap piece of wood.

Be sure to cover the floor of your work area to prevent and of the concrete mix from getting on the floors.

Pour the mixture into the plant saucer.

Step 4:

If the Vinyl Concrete Patcher isn't enough to completely fill the saucer a basic concrete mix like a 30 minute fast setting concrete mix would do the trick.

Be sure sure the saucer is placed on an even surface wile its setting. I placed the saucer on top of a bucket and used spacers under it until I achieved a level surface.

Use the scrap piece of wood used to mix the concrete to evenly spread out the mix.

Wear latex gloves during this entire process because this can get messy.

Once the saucer is filled and spread out evenly allow it to sit for 24 hours.

Step 5: 24 Hours Later

24 hours later gently remove the concrete from the plant saucer.

Step 6: Finish and Paint

Now that you have your fully formed concrete table top prime with Rust-Oleum Primer paint.

Sand the rough edges of the top with a 120 grit sand paper.

Now paint and decorate to taste.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Table!

Place table top on the chain link stool.

Secure the table top to the stool using Conduit Straps drilling into the base.(However, wait about a week or two before completing this step to ensure the concrete is fully cured and reducing the chances of cracking the concrete.
