*SPOILER ALERT ABOUT HARRY POTTER BOOKS*
The deluminator is an object that is mentioned in the first and last books in Harry Potter. It is a device that can pull light from nearby lamps and light sources. Albums Dumbledore was in possession of the deluminator until he died and left it to Ron Weasly in his will. Being a muggle, I am unable to recreate it with all of its magical properties, but I did manage to make a model of the deluminator that lights up. It was a lot of fun to make and it only took me about half a day to make. I also think that it is pretty easy, especially since it uses very standard materials that you don’t have to go out of your way to buy. I hope you enjoy making this as much as I did!

Supplies

Cardboard (preferably plain brown)
1 red sharpie
1 pencil
Semi transparent white paper (white pariente paper will work
Fairy lights (this will only work with a small battery pack)
Hot glue gun (make sure you have plenty of glue. I found that I used a lot on this project)
Black, white, and red paint
Scissors

Step 1: Cutting Pieces for the Box and Lid

First I cut two pieces of cardboard that were 3 inches by 2 1/4 inches. Next I cut two pieces that were 3 inches by 1 3/8 inches. For the bottom, the dimensions are 2 1/4 inches by 1 3/8 inches. These are the pieces that I used for the box. The top of the lid is the same dimensions as the bottom of the box (2 1/4 x 1 3/8). For the sides, there are two pieces that are 3/8 in by 2 1/4 in, and the other two sides are 1 3/8 in by 3/8 in.

Step 2: Gluing the Box and Lid

When creating the box, I took one piece at a time and used my hot glue gun to glue it to the bottom. I glued the inside of the pieces, where they made a 90 degree angle, so that the glue wasn’t visible on the outside of the box. I made sure to hold the piece in place until I was sure the glue had dried before letting go. It is ok if there is a slight gap between the pieces because it will look cool when we add the light. I repeated these steps for the lid of the box except that it would be preferable to eliminate gaps between pieces. DO NOT GLUE THE LID ONTO THE BOX YET!!!

Step 3: Adding the Fairy Lights

I cut a strip of cardboard that was 2 1/2 inches by 3/4 inches. I glued it vertically to the middle of the bottom of the box, parallel to the thinner sides of the box. I glued it against one side so that there was a gap on the other side. Next, if you are using a small and skinny battery pack like the one in the picture (which I strongly recommend) glue three small strips of cardboard together and attach the battery pack. Next, glue the cardboard pieces and battery pack to one of the thinner sides of the box, with the on/off switch peeking out the top of the box. Take the time to untangle your fairy lights and push them through the gap you made just now. Let the lights go on the other side of the box, opposite of the switch.

Step 4: Create the Top

Cut a piece of cardboard that is barely smaller than the opening of the box but that also is short enough to fit inside between the sides and the battery pack. Poke a hole with scissors or a pencil directly in the center of the piece you just cut. Take the end of the fairy lights and thread About 7 inches of them through the hole you made. Leave the rest of the lights in the box. Smear some hot glue on the strip that is separating the two parts of the box and push the cardboard with the hole so that it is glued to the strip. Cut a piece of cardboard that will, once again fit inside the walls of the box. Make this piece tall enough to reach from the piece you just glued in, to just below the on/off switch for the lights. If it is difficult to understand what I am saying, Take a look at the pictures.

Step 5: Create the Top Part 2

Cut two semi circles with a width of 1 inch and a height of 1/2 inch. Next strip one side of the cardboard from the little ridges inside the cardboard (shown in pictures). Cut a piece of this thinner cardboard that is long enough to attach to the round part of the semi circles and about 1/2 inch wide. Poke a hole in middle of the strip of thin cardboard you just cut using scissors or a pencil. Glue either side of the strip to the two semi circles, gluing in the inside to avoid the glue showing (see picture). Thread the 7 inches of fairy lights through the hole in the structure you made and smear hit glue in the bottom of the semi circles. Press the bottom on the box, against the small wall between the battery pack. (Sorry if some of the pictures are upside down. I don’t know how that happened)

Step 6: Create the Top Part 3

Strip off the top layer of a piece of cardboard just long and wide enough to cover the top of the battery pack, plus a little more to cover the sides. Place this piece on top of the battery pack and make a little rectangle where the switch is. You want to be able to switch the lights on a off so make sure your rectangle is long enough for that. Attach it to the battery pack using hot glue (see picture for these steps). Finally, cut out a piece of cardboard that looks like half a gear, make it just long enough that it can fit in the top of the box vertically to the narrow sides. Cut out two half circles and hot glue them to either side of the gear. Glue the whole thing on top of the now covered battery pack at the end farthest from the lights.

Step 7: Making the Ruby Around the Light

To make the ruby that surround the fairy lights and gives them a red glow, you will need some parchment paper and a red sharpie. I don’t know the exact dimensions for this but I will try to guess. Cut four isosceles triangles with a base of 1/3 if an inch and with sides of 1/2 inches. Tape the sides together so that they make what looks like half of an octagon. DO NOT MAKE IT A PYRAMID YET! Take your red sharpie and color the side of the triangles that don’t have the tape. Now you can tape the last sides and tape them together to make a pyramid with the tape in the inside and the sharpie on the outside. Repeat what you just did. Take your string of fairy lights at the top of your box and string them through the tip of one of te pyramids so that the point is on top of the round part of the box. Hot glue it down to the box. Roll up your fairy lights so that they fit snuggly inside the pyramid (it is ok if they are a bit taller). Take the other pyramid and place it on top of the first one so that the bottoms both touch. Tape this in place from the inside. Your deluminator should now have a diamond shaped ruby on it. Please use the pictures for reference.

Step 8: Painting Your Deluminator

Painting the deluminator was quite simple. I used variations of gray, white, black and red. I used the design that was in the back of my Harry Potter book. It is up to you whether you use this same design. I will include a picture of it.

Step 9: Finishing

You are finally to the end, there is just one more step before you are free to enjoy your deluminator. Adding the lid. This is actually one of the most simple steps, you see all you have to do is glue it to the side farthest from the battery pack. I glued mine at an angle but you can decide based on what you want yours to look like. Yay! Now your done! I hope you had a lot of fun because I sure did.
