DIY (Design It Yourself) Doodle Pillowcase

About: Former Instructables employee CHECK OUT MY WORK

Read your child a bedtime story while they let their imagination run wild on this doodle pillow case.   The doodle pillowcase  is a fantastic addition to any child's bedroom.  The notebook graphics are painted on with fabric paint. and drawing on the pillow with washable markers makes it easy to clean.

Check out for the original Doodle Duvet cover where I got my inspiration!!!

Step 1: Materials

  • PIllow Case
  • Fabric Paint - I used Jacquard fabric paint
  • Washable Markers
  • Paint brush
  • Iron
  • Measuring Stick
  • Pencil

Step 2: Wash and Iron Pillow Case

Buy a white cotton pillow case.  To prep it for painting just wash it once and iron out the wrinkles.  Ironing the pillowcase well is important for the next step.

Step 3: Draw Notebook Pattern

Line Dimensions:
  • Horizontal blue lines are 2" apart
  • Vertical red line is 2 3/4" from the left side (this is assuming the pillow case opening is on the bottom)
  • Circles are 1 1/4" in diamater, center of first circle is 7" from top, second circle is 15" from the top, third circle is 23" from the top

Step 4: Paint Lines

I used a paint brush with a flat head like the one in the picture.  It was about 3/16" wide so all of my lines are 3/16".

Painting the lines is pretty straight forward, just make sure to paint the blue lines first, then the red line, then the circles.

Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

Step 5: Iron and Wash

24 hours after painting your pillowcase, thoroughly iron the pillow case to allow the paint to set.  I first ironed the back side of the pillow case that I did not paint, then I ironed the front painted side.  Make sure all of the lines are ironed.

To wash: turn pillow case inside out and machine wash using warm water on gentle cycle.

Step 6: Create Something Awesome!

Corvidae had lots of fun coloring really fast on the pillow and putting markers up her nose :D

That's so cute! But it completely defeats the purpose of being grounded to your room. Lol

Still going to do it, though. =D

Hey – imitation is the best form of flattery!

We love that our doodle pillowcase is so popular and that everyone wants one! The original and best (and we’ve drawn all the lines for you so no bother) was designed by Stitch designworks (incidentally it’s our copyright too) and is available from us at

Best news of all, we’re now launching in the US at the New York International Gift Fair at booth 2166 on Jan 29 through Feb 2 so if you’re a wholesale buyer come and grab us before we sign up elsewhere and if you’re a retail purchaser drop us a line and we’ll let you know your nearest stockist or US online supplier as soon as we’ve finalised our plans!

It sure is!! I loved the duvet cover! I just added a link to stitch designworks in the intro step!

I agree your inspiration may have been from their's but I feel like your design is way more than enough different from their's that they shouldn't be posting what is basically an ad on your Instructable comment page.

This is a great idea and I think your instructable and design is very well executed. I like that you chose the long orientation, and your photography is well done!

Seems like an awesome idea. Have you had any issue with the markers being used on other non-doodle type pillows?
