Hello and welcome to this tutorial! Today I will be showing you how to make DIY distressed and studded shorts from a pair of jeans as well as a few other tools. I hope you enjoy and learn something new! In case you need to see the steps visually I have added a video which you can view.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
For this tutorial you will need the following things:
- A pair of really well fitting jeans
- Studs (optional)
- Pliers (optional)
Step 2: Cutting Your Jeans
For this step it is very important to put your jeans on. Make sure that they fit you really well, at least at the top third. Then, look for how short you want them. Before you draw the line of where you want to cut it, leave a little more space than what you actually plan to cut. So in case you mess it up a little, you always have more space to “fix” it. Once you have eyed your favorable length, mark one point on each side of one of your legs. Then take your jeans off and use a ruler to connect the point. Next, lay the jean-halves on top of each other, and then cut along the line you just drew.
Step 3: Distress Your Shorts
Draw parallel and horizontal lines which are about 2 cm apart where you want the distressed design to be. Then, use your scissors to cut along these lines. Once you are done, place your fingers under one of the cut parts. You should be able to see vertical strings coming out of it. Using your tweezers, pull these loose strings out. This does take a while, but it is definitely worth it. At the end you should be able to only see horizontal strings.
Step 4: Fringe the Bottom
To fringe your shorts, you must take the bottom of your shorts, and make vertical cuts (about 2-3cm long), that are about only a few centimetres apart. Then, pull out the loose horizontal strings with your tweezers.
Step 5: Add Studs
Spread out all of the studs on your desired area until you have a pattern you like. Take your marker and make a mark underneath each stud to remember where you put them. Then, put all of the studs away from your shorts. Take each stud individually and press their spikes through the material. Use the pliers to bend the spikes down, so that the studs can not move anymore and do not hurt you when you wear the shorts. Repeat this step with all the studs you want to use.
