Introduction: DIY Fabric Face Mask (Rectangle) - Hand Sewn Technique
This face mask only uses hand sewing techniques.
It is intended as a barrier for coughing and sneezing, but it is not a medically tested mask prototype.

Kit you'll need:
- Sewing needles
- Sewing thread
- Scissors
- Fabric scraps
- Elastic / hairband
If you already have a rectangle of fabric, skip to Step 8.
I would like to add a set of machine sewn mask tutorials in various styles.This mask took me a slow 5 hours over 3 days (taking photos always makes the process a little longer). In the future, I will also upload a lavender eye mask design which I will has for helping with more restful nights sleep.
Step 1: Pick Your Mask Template
The rectangular mask has a few components:
- Double sided fabric
- 4 folds creating overlaps
- 2 elastic loops for ears
Step 2: Overlap and Sew First Pieces
My goal was to use waste textiles that I already had.
I had 4 small fabric scraps to start with. I used some offcuts of organic cotton from Offset Warehouse.
If you already have a rectangle of fabric, skip to Step 8!
Step 3: Running Stitch (doubled)
Step 4: Open Out and Sew Edges Flat
Then I connected these two pieces into one large piece.
Step 5: Repeat Steps 2-4
Step 6: Check Measurements Against Template
Step 7: Sew Together Large Pieces (repetition of Previous Steps)
Step 8: Hem the 2 Longest Edges
These long edege will be the upper and lower edges, nearest to your eyes/nose and chin/neck.
Step 9: Mark Out the Folds With Pins
- Mark out the folds with pins
- Crease along lines (can use iron)
Step 10: Fold and Pin in Place
Step 11: Check the Edges Are Folded and Pin in Place
Step 12: Next: Baste-stitch and Stitch the Shorter Edges
Step 13: Add the Elastic Ear Straps
Step 14: Finish the Mask and Make Adjustments
