DIY Leaf Cast

About: Small business centered on taking classic elements and creating decor with a modern twist!

Need a simple and fast DIY project to create some unique small decor pieces? Look no further than our latest project, the DIY leaf cast. We love bringing natural elements into the home and if you don't have the best green thumb, you know that it can be difficult to keep those wonderful house plants alive. To solve this problem, we looked into different ways to express the element of nature without the responsibility to take care of another living thing!

Step 1: Gather Materials

For this project, you will need:

  • Foamcore or Corrugated Plastic Sheet
  • Concrete or Plaster Mix
  • Craft Knife
  • Mixing Cups
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Cutting Mat (recommended)
  • Tape
  • Ruler
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Leaf of your choice

Step 2: Create Concrete Form

Using the craft knife, cut the foamcore/plastic sheet to the desired size of final cast. In this case, I used a 5" x 5" square base with 2" tall walls around the edges.

Step 3: Secure the Form and Seal

Tape the edges together and secure to the base with hot glue.

Seal all the cracks on the corners and bottom with hot glue to ensure that no concrete mix will leak during the pour.

Step 4: Place Leaf and Pour

Place the leaf face down on the bottom of the form in the center.

It is recommended to use a single broad leaf, leaves of evergreens are difficult to remove from the cast once the mixture is set.

Mix the concrete/plaster according to package instructions.

When the desired consistency is reached, pour the mixture on top of the leaf, being sure to evenly coat and gently shake the form to allow the mixture to settle equally across the form.

Step 5: Remove Leaf

After the mixture has hardened enough to move, gently remove the form work by cutting the seals and tape with the craft knife. It is important to not allow the mixture to harden completely or removing the leaf will be almost impossible.

Once the cast has been removed from the form, gently flip over to expose the leaf face.

Work around the edges of the leaf and locate the stem with the craft knife.

Gently scrape away the thin layer around the edges of the leaf and remove it from the cast.

Step 6: Rinse and Cure

Rinse away any excess concrete powder and leaf pieces and allow to dry fully.

Check package instructions for full cure time.

Step 7: Display

Once the cast has fully cured and hardened, display the piece wherever you like!
