Edit: The original source link was the wrong one
Been a lurker of this site for some time, but never posted before. Yesterday I stumbled upon a very simple pallet bed design. Here is the original source.
It's interesting, because it looks so simple and cheap, even the clumsiest person could do it (someone like me). All you need are:
- 12 or so pallets (you can use less if you make the bed lower)
- LED Strip lights (very cheap on the internet)
- Cable Ties
- Some sort of carpet tiles
In the original article it is said you can use a sander or sandpaper to smooth out the wood, but I don't think it's necessary.
Step 1: Start the Building
As you can see, you can make the bed higher or lower, depending on your taste. Personally I would prefer to have some space between the floor and the mattress. Higher means warmer air. Plus it's far more comfortable when you sit, to have a knee-high space for your legs.
Every pallet you can tie to the others with cable ties (zip ties). They are not the most attractive solution, but at least they are cheap and don't require any skills or tools. You can cut the excessive parts and it will still look okay.
If you have brackets, a drill, nails or screws - then go for the fancier and more secured method.
Before adding the plywood at the top, put the LED lights. Just put them through the holes and attach them with the zip ties. This is an advantage of the cable ties.
Now cover the pallets with the plywood and nail them with small nails, so you don't harm the wood.
Step 2: Finishing Touch
Now all you have to do is put the carpet tiles on top, so it looks better than just plain ol' plywood. Or you could experiment with other fabrics, materials or simply paint.
When you turn the lights off and turn the LEDs on, the room look a lot cooler. And the ladies love it too.
Disclaimer: The mattress is not DIY and you should probably invest in a good one. Back pain is a thing! Also snoring.
